TOP GUN (1 Viewer)

Saw it last night and enjoyed it!  Was I blown away by it though...no.    The plane scenes are amazing, good fun overall.   The original 1986 Top Gun is probably the single greatest quotable movie of all time.   Almost every single scene has a memorable line.  This one only had a couple after first view..."we're having a good moment, let's not ruin it" and "you told me not to think!" are the 2 that stand out.

And Jennifer Connelly isn't bad looking but her couple scenes of her walking to the door....she has the body of a 10 yr old girl.

And thank god at the end when he went back to the bar to find Penny, she wasn't hiding and played "you've lost that loving feeling" on the jukebox.   I was waiting for it and I'm glad they didn't cave.  Would've been cheese city.

And that one move by the enemy plane to avoid the missile....WTF was that?  Can they really do stuff like that?   Almost like he shut the engines down and let the air resistance put him into a slow motion side spin.  That was pretty crazy.
Spoiler alert

The F-18 probably couldn't do what they were supposed too in this movie

I thought they did a good job of tying that in without being overly sappy, except for maybe the piano part. Could've left that part out.
Yep, agreed.   The moustache seemed to be a little distracting too. I did like the subtlety of long camera shots to show the height difference between Rooster and Maverick, to really play up the genes passed down.

Also surprised they didn't figure out a way to have a Meg Ryan cameo as the mom (know the dialogue was she died, but they could've easily rewrote that)

He literally got hit by a missile.  a literal MISSILE and not a scratch.
You do realize you’re talking about Tom Cruise here right. Tom Fricken Cruise! They name missiles after him for Christ’s sake.  He probably caught the missile in his teeth, (why for the life of me they didn’t show that I don’t know as it would have been epic).   We’ll stand for none of this negativity in here bud.

He didnt get hit my a missile.  It hit the flares, but the explosion damaged the plane.

If anything he shoulda died when ejecting at Mach 10

Has it been long enough yet and is 8 pages of a thread long enough yet to be able to drop spoilers??  is anyone still reading at this point to decide of they wanna see it??

We saw this yesterday.  Thoughts:

1)  Obviously, great movie.  Loved every minute of it.  Well, except the football scene but I was smart enough to use that opportunity to refill my drink and use the restroom.

2)  Saw it in IMAX but wasn't too impressed.  Had regular old seats, close together, as opposed to the nice electric recliners that are extra wide that we've become accustomed to when we go to the theater.  Fortunately, a couple people on our right decided not to show up for the movie so we moved over a seat to get some extra room.  But I didn't feel like the extra size of the screen or the sound were a significant improvement over the regular theater environment.  Certainly didn't hurt but in hindsight probably would have been just as fine to just see it in one of the other theaters at the complex.

Same.  IMAX wasn’t that impressive IMO.

EXACT same scenario as me.  I just assume at $20 per ticket and an IMAX screen that it would all be upgraded seats too.  Nope, not at all.   Old school uncomfortable seats and packed in like a sardine.  Dude on my left had a beer in his armrest cupholder too and literally milked that thing the ENTIRE MOVIE.  Took the last sips as the ending credits rolled.

Also agree on the sound....good and all, but for sure would've preferred comfortable seats.  I mean I haven't been to a theatre in 2 years so anything with a big screen and great sound would be an experience.

Yeah, I was hoping Meg would show up, too. She still looks good.

I think that was the biggest whiff of the movie for me.    Way too much in that few minutes with the singing Great Balls of Fire with the sappy flashbacks.    Small nitpick though.

Why exactly did Penny pull the plug on the jukebox to start the whole piano thing anyways?

And I know all guys thought it at one point, so I’ll just say it…..Hangman had the coolest helmet design.

I am still amazed that movies don't have a 10 minute intermission.  People wanna pee and be comfortable while chugging their 80 ounce drinks, plus the theaters would make a lot more money selling more food/drinks during that intermission.

Silly

End rant
Not a silly rant at all.  For a movie just over 2 hours, it's not as bad.  But, when they get to the 2.5 and longer, they need that intermission.  I need that intermission!
The intermission popcorn and drink sales would be through the roof.

My wife and I saw it this weekend, and really enjoyed it.  I agree with previous posts, this move could bring back the theater industry.

Cinemark XD is amazing--I would say better than IMAX. Great seats and sound. The only downside was we went on Sunday and ended up in a fairly packed theater of old people. It was like a senior home had a field day or something. I mean when you pick your seats out, you always look for a spot that isn't RIGHT NEXT TO a person. But no, we had an old couple sitting right on top of my daughter. And the woman was one of those, "What did he say? Was she in the first movie?" type people. The old guy was one of those  "I am going to make as much noise as I can with this popcorn bag" people.

Overall a very enjoyable movie. It did seem for a while they were just refilming the first one shot for shot, but I was glad they mixed it up. I was also worried they were going to have Jennifer Connelly's daughter somehow be Maverick's kid and she had somehow hid that from him,. but then the kid had the throwaway "My dad''s in Hawaii with his new girlfriend." line. Whew!!!

It was a lot of fun to watch though.

Plot twist I can't go to the movies with my wife anymore. Especially if we grab a drink before.

She's a loud talker and will check her phone once or twice.

Then she gets pissed at me when I tell her to shhhhhhhsh and put or phone away.

Took the wife and son the other night.  After reading the other thread where a few guys haven't seen the original, I thought it bbest to have the kid (17) watch it without seeing the original first.  We watched TG when we got home and noticed Goose and Rooster had the same line, "Come on Mav let's see some of that pilot ####"

Didn't rooster pull it?
Ah maybe, that makes more sense.  That whole moment felt way too rushed and forced.

I thought maybe Penny pulled it as part of the whole "skit" of what happens when somebody gets a card declined/can't pay a tab.  Kind of like...this dude is gonna put us out of business...conserve energy and shut it all down.  Then that guy gets roasted by all the rest of the bar.

he was already thrown out of the bar.....

Agree with others that Jennifer Connelly looked amazing. Made me want to go back to watch her first starring role in the awful movie "Career Opportunities". She looks amazing in that in a whole different way.....

While she looks amazing for a woman pushing 50, the best part of her from before is now sadly gone.
