Trump's Disinformation Campaign: How are the Dems going to combat this? (1 Viewer)

Better opposition research
Yeah, in 2016 we only knew that Trump stole from charities, had to pay a multimillion dollar settlement for defrauding people, had sexually assaulted like 19 women or something, had affairs with porn stars and playmates and then paid them to cover it up, routinely stiffed contractors he hired for projects, and told lies pretty much every time he opened his mouth.  We need to dig up some dirt that's actually damaging this time.

Unfortunately, I think a big part of the answer is that we have to trust the public to eventually figure out how not to fall for scams.

It may not be realistic, but it's probably our only hope.

No, we just need to be more adept, merciless and relentless at advertising it.

It is.  There's more than enough info out there now that proves beyond any reasonable doubt who Trump is and what he stands for.  More info isn't the answer.

On the other hand, there's no guarantees that he wins in November.

I saw this week and it's obvious that it's just not going to matter to most of the hard core trump supporters - https://twitter.com/walshfreedom/status/1222698975356170241

An Iowa voter today actually told me that he knows Trump lies all the time, he knows Trump is corrupt as hell, and he knows Trump thinks he’s above the law. But he doesn’t care. Trump is “his payback.”
Payback for what?  A black president?

Yes.  We need to get better at painting Trump as weak, ineffective, unintelligent, and corrupt  All things he's given mountains of evidence for; Dems just don't do a good job of selling it.

Bill Maher had a great example of what we need to see.  Ad

If you try to understand why it works it will drive you mad. But look at the Trump thread and pay attention to what Trump supporters elsewhere say - it doesn’t matter what the truth is, what matters is the sense of pain, angst, sadness, anger that comes from liberals or Dems when Trump says and does horrible things.

So for instance - a common refrain in Trump rallies is his claim that he passed the reform act for the VA. Also the claim that Mexico is paying for the wall. Totally false, what happens is the joy that comes from adulation and participation in the lie. It’s exultation.

Wrong on so many levels. So Trump supporters in the Trump thread makes posts that they are happy when Anti-Trump supporters are in pain, angst, sadness, and anger? That’s a terrible broad generalization that would come from Tim.

Well yes, it’s not just the thread - but look at your Joy Behar post. This. Why is that a source of excitement for Trump supporters? Just observationally I’d say maybe 40% of the posts are of this ilk.

Did I make any comments about it? It’s not my fault she can control herself. No one in that thread said they enjoyed how she reacted.

Thanks for the reply. Well good you won’t mind then when I say that it’s a very stimulating story for the right wing blogosphere right now.

The Don Lemon situation is similar. So the Sec of State was caught flat footed by an NPR reporter and one who is very knowledgeable about Europe and Ukraine. In response he berates her and then makes claims she mistook Bangladesh for Ukraine. So preposterous that any democratic nation including the past US administrations would have fired such a foreign minister or SOS.

But instead the focus is on Don Lemon laughing (unprofessionally) at Rick Wilson’s mocking Trump supporters for not caring about the president’s own ignorance of basic geography. That Lemon story is very stimulating for Trump supporters - and IMO it’s because they have a strong sense of resentment and that is probably a top 3 value for them. And I think that’s why the lies work, that feeling of satisfaction is more important than any underlying fact or issue that might emerge from any debate. It’s not unique to Americans, I think Trump being the media Svengali that he is, his opportunism, and technology have merged in a perfect storm at this place and time.

Thanks for the just awful mass generalization.

An inverse of this phenomenon is the pain, angst, sadness and anger that millions of self-identified conservatives have experienced as a result of -- in their minds, at least -- liberalism. And Trump validates those feelings, even if he hasn't technically done anything to reverse the cause of them.

Really I’m being very specific and addressing two stories you have personally posted about. Do you not have any counter POV? Or do you think it’s just an exception, these two stories?
You aren’t specific. Two examples that aren’t good doesn’t back up your massive terrible generalization. I had a lot of respect for you. Have a good weekend.

The problem is the disinformation isn't only coming from Trump - it's coming from both sides.  The fact that ONE side seems to think it's not them is the problem.  I think Trump is using their own game against them and now they're crying foul.

A large part of the disinformation is to make you think this way.
And for you to think that way too.

It's the height of hubris to think your (not YOU specifically, but in general) side isn't part of the problem.

First, define “the problem.”  Then I’ll decide whether my side is part of it.
Disinformation. Think Russian Collusion, Pee Tapes, Russian Agent, Quid-Pro-Quo, etc...

That's just the tip of the iceberg.  We also have people saying Trump will sell Alaska to the Russians, install himself as President for life and all other manner of things to sow the misinformation.

:goodposting:

Plus if a Trump supporter made a catch-all grievance thread like this one about Democrats it probably wouldn’t last 10 posts.

This is disinformation. You are spreading it.
Oh, Really?  You need to read more:

https://www.deseret.com/u-s-world/2020/2/4/21122959/california-adam-schiff-president-donald-trump-could-alaska-russia-impeachment

This is the same guy that made up a fake phone call about Trump.  If you don't think that is disinformation then I suggest you don't know the meaning of the word.

If you don't think the low information voters on the left aren't believing this then I don't know what to tell you.

Here is part of the problem.

What you said: "We also have people saying Trump will sell Alaska to the Russians"

What Adam Schiff said: "Trump could offer Alaska to the Russians"

"will" and "could" are not synonyms.
That’s really your play here? The fact Schiff would even be talking about something so stupid means you got owned big time. Take the L.

I can only provide the truth.  I can't make you believe it.  I'm here to help if you need me.

If you're going to rely on petty semantics, you've already lost.

I agree that Schiff was talking about something stupid.

(He was quoting an argument put forth by the President's own legal team.)

Negative and a major reason why YOUR side is part of the problem.

I'll give you an "A" for effort, but that's all you'll get.
Saying someone could do something because precedent has now been set, is NOT the same as saying someone will do something.  This is exactly the problem.  After Schiff said what he did conservative media did their victory laps, acting outraged that he thinks Trump will sell Alaska even though it's not at all what he said.

If you have to resort to changing the meaning of a word, then you're not providing the truth. You're engaging in the very epitome of disinformation.

The DISINFORMATION is floating BS hypothetical and CLEARLY over the top nonsense like this.   THAT is the disinformation.  It's meant to throw it out into the public sphere to make it seem like this IS the case.

There was multiple disinformation facts I provided above that the left ran with that turned out to be not true.  It appears the definition of "disinformation" - at least on this board - is someone that doesn't tow the Democratic Party line.

A.  He made a parody to show the possible meaning of what Trump said.  Some of the things claimed about that...were definitely disinformation of Trump

B. He was using  Dershowitz’s example in the subject of that link.  This is proving that disinformation gets spread.  It was about an example Trumps representative made about abuse of power.

So yes... I think its disinformation...but not by Schiff.  But those reporting it about Schiff without discussing Dersh is definitely disinformation.
