US Men's National Team (18 Viewers)

Miles is a revelation. He's been so good.

And Antonee has taken another step, IMO, as well.

I thought Zimmerman was fantastic. Beastly in the air against an athletic team. Both CBs pushing forward with dribble and passes. That is a ridiculously athletic backline.
It is really is athletic.  Even Dest is really fast when he actually sprints.

Zimmerman's ability to win header after header in that game and direct almost all of the wins to teammates is the main reason Jamaica got almost nothing done.  Since they had zero midfielders (as was predicted in the preview I watched from Jamaican youtuber, which was right on the money), their main hope was to pump high and deep and hope to get to it with their big forwards.  Zimm shut that down almost single handily.

I am nervous about where the offense will come from against Panama if neither Dest nor Jedi play.   GGG seemed to really push attacking high and wide against Jam but I don't feel confident that Yedlin/Moore/Bello can give that same kind of offensive play.

Sam Stejskal

@samstejskal

@cboehm with a fun question to Kellyn Acosta about the dark arts, which drew a chuckle from Acosta. Reminds me that Acosta told me he watched some of @watke_'s videos about his ####-housing during the Gold Cup. He's a fan. And the refs are his best friend.

At least he provides entertainment no matter what you think of his coaching :)

PANAMA CITY, Panama--Gregg Berhalter collects Starbucks mugs.

- Pepi scored 2 goals giving him 3 overall.  He is tied in 77th spot with Dike, Gioachinni, Holden, Agudelo, O'Brien, Corona, Brooks, Clark, Sanneh, Gonzo and Doyle (popular group here at the 3 goals spot).

- Aaronson had his 4th assist, tied for 39th all time with Wegerle, Nips, Convey and Eddie Johnson

- Turner had his 8th shut out which moves him up to tied for 7th all time with Steffen.

- GGG continues to widen the gap between his best record and the second best record of Arena's.*

* I put Arena second because the coaches ahead of him (besides GGG) only coached a couple of games each.

GGG in his press conference said they consider Weston's injury "light" and they hope that he could be back for Costa Rica.

I think I may have been wrong about Musah.  I reread the rule for the 10th time and I think he is cap tied officially now.

He has played more than 3 games with the US with at least one of them being a competitive game, which I think are the two parts to the rule now(if you are U21).

That may have made it official, but the fat lady sang when he got to play with Zardes rather than limp around with a Kane.

4 years ago today was wet and bumpy.  Lets hope for a nice result tonight to further distance us from that.
With the injuries and player COVID restrictions limiting this lineup, I don't have huge hopes...but would be pretty amazing to exorcise those wet and bumpy demons, if at least for the day.

GGG comments about Panama (ESPN)

__________

As for Panama, Berhalter is expecting a difficult match against a team he said has been "very consistent." The Canaleros have so far taken five points from four games, though they are coming off a disappointing 1-0 defeat away to El Salvador.

"They don't let up a lot of chances," Berhalter said about Panama. "They're the lowest expected goals [against] of the first four games. We're second lowest. [They're a] strong defensive team, heavy crossing team. The one outlier game was the last game ,and I don't know if you saw the field conditions and what they were dealing with, it was a very difficult game to play. It was monsoon type rains, field was flooded. It was an abnormal game. It's a good team. It's a very physically strong team. They'll be very aggressive in duels, they're very good attacking in the penalty box."

I think he's spot on.  Panama has always had a physical team that likes to cross and get heads on the ball in the box.  Not the most graceful or fluid team and definitely not as fast as Jamaica or as cynical as Honduras or nearly anywhere near as technical as Mexico or even Canada these days.

Panama will be a difficult nut to crack defensively.  It'll take work on the wings and Pepi making moves in the box.  Whoever is in the midfield should look to dictate tempo and control space. Make the crosses that come in be low quality.

I've watched them a couple times this year... they're a better, quicker team than the old Blas Perez squads. Iv'e been impressed with their speed of play and technical ability- but as you say, not a Mex or Can level, especially no big time standout players that caught my eye. but consistent across the squad with guys who find spaces, are tidy with the ball and stay organized. And the xG against per game is interesting as well.

oh, Greg with the odd ball line up tonight.  Hope our subs are ready :)

Steven Goff

@SoccerInsider

USMNT lineup: Turner; Moore, Zimmerman, McKenzie, Bello; Acosta, Musah, Lletget; Arriola, Zardes, Weah.

Greg either insanely confident or really stupid.

Sitting Dest, aaronson  pepi AND adams with weston and Robinson (plus the pre camp injuries) already out?

And Moore over yedlin?

HATE this lineup.

ugh...

I was afraid because Arriola careered with a 6.5 grade last match he was going to get another shot.   I hope I'm wrong about him.

I hope Moore shocks the hell out of me too.
