US Men's National Team (6 Viewers)

It is hard to not realize that almost every other striker we have scores that ball early that Jesus could not direct on goal. Jesus is by far the weakest in the air.

42 giveaways in the defensive third in a half seems like kind of a problem. Even when there's time to make a pass they're hitting it straight to a defender.

Probably the worst collective performance in the last couple years. Even in some of those early WCQ games they were unlucky not to get the W. Here they might be lucky to only be down on.

I think a game like this really misses Musah. His ability to solve problems by dribbling out of pressure would be a big help here as the team clearly can't advance the ball through the middle on the pass.
Well, a game like this exposes a few things

1) Trying to play out of the back with Turner, Long, Zimmerman and a 6 that struggles for progressive passes is probably not an effective strategy against a pressing side
2) When we go through the middle, there needs to be a lot of quick touches, triangles, and/or progressive dribbling skills. LDT has been a bit invisible and hasn't really provided any of this
3) the fullbacks have to be an outlet. Vines can't work in this system if he's going to just sit back as it doesn't spread the press and open passing lanes

I hope Iran does not have this style of press. Japan and SK usually stand alone in the ability to tight press so hopefully the other Asian team adopted different styles.

I haven't been following this s closely as usual over the last few months. Have we ever switched out of the 4-3-3, even for just a little bit, as an in game adjustment? Just curious. I like it when we are playing our super athletic guys for sure. Just wondering if he uses a fall back?

It looks to me like Japan is using a 4-2-3-1? Not sure what they announced officially.
It often proves effective against the 4-3-3 in my experience. ESPECIALLY on a slow pitch.

GGG has been very married to the 4-3-3 for almost his entire tenure. He has experimented with a 3-5-2 at times but always abandoned it.

He has a few different looks in the 4-3-3 though. IN the summer games, Musah and Adams played a double pivot together where as in much of qualifying he played 2 8's together in front of Adams.
A 3-5-2 would have been my choice, happy to hear he tried. Nice to have that in pocket in case of emergency.

Well a fully awful performance. If not for Turner, this should have been a 4-5 goal loss, which based on the game state would have been a fair result.

I wonder if US Soccer has to rethink whether they need one friendly before the Wales game.....if this is what it looks like after a long lay off, I am not hopeful for the first game against Wales with out some time to get the rust off.

On a side note, why is there no page advance numbers at the TOP of each thread page? Am I just stupid and it's there? Tia
i haven't found it in the new version and.....it's horrific

I see it on top and bottom in my browser. I am using chrome.
Are you on mobile? I'm using Chrome and don't see it anywhere

On desktop. Maybe I am misunderstanding what you guys are talking about. Here is a picture of the top of my FFA page here in this thread which shows the page numbers and how to advance (on left of screen)

I have no idea how the GGGG will respond to this. If Musah, CP, and Jedi are out, this team is a shell of its potential capacity.

We have no luck on injuries so I expect we will be missing 2-3 starters no matter what.

Neither Musah or Pulisic are really hurt though. This was just precautionary. Valencia asked GGG to let Musah rest and Pulisic would have played today if it was a WC game.

I don't have that on my android mobile. I tried to post a screen shot, but I guess it's still not 2022 in message board land.

Good teams can pressure the single pivot. This shouldn't have been news. The fact it was and that we didn't change formation isn't surprising though.

* The US had many less giveaways in the second half but alarmingly, Japan actually had better scoring chances in the second half compared to the first half. Japan had multiple easy counters in second half.

* I believe the US did not have a shot on goal. While I am sure that has happened before, the number of times has to be incredibly small in the post 1990 era.

* Sargent looked much more lively than Jesus did who barely touched the ball outside of his poor header.

As nice as the two wins were this summer against Morocco and Uruguay, this is probably a better indication of what things will look like in Qatar since we really suck when not playing at home. And lets face it, Japan is SIGNIFICATLY closer in quality to Iran and Wales than they are England.

it is even more egregious when Adams short passing is as bad as it was today. Passing is the weakest part of his game but he was spectacularly poor today at it.

The worst part about this is it provides an excellent blueprint for our opponents to deploy against us at the WC. If the USMNT cannot break the press through skill or change their tactics / formation to remove the effectiveness of that press, the US is 100% fuxored.

Just a reminder to all you guys who think Pulisic should sit the bench....this is what you get.
I think Musah is more important than CP on this team.

Specifically for this game, Musah would have been a million times more important. Pulisic offers nothing to a team that can't get out of their own 3rd, and Musah's strongest skill is solving problems to get the attack going (something Luca could not do at all today).

But we can't lament missing players when missing players is the norm. We have to expect multiple would be first choice players will be missing in Qatar because it has been that way with this group for almost the entire cycle.

Not gonna totally jump off the wagon after 1 bad exhibition loss, but things really seem to be foreshadowing a really bad performance in Qatar.

We've got multiple guys who are expected to play key roles but probably wont be playing full time leading up to the tournament (CP, Dest, Turner)
We've got multiple players that missed big chunks of qualifying (or are hurt now) and just aren't used to playing with the team.
Our #1 striker choice is clearly a very inconsistent/poor finisher
Long is going to start at CB and he's just way outclassed.
Our coach seems to have no flexibility in system and EVERYONE knows exactly what we're going to try and do.
We've been bad away from home for a while.

I honestly think this is going to go very poorly.

Maybe adding CP, Jedi and Musah back into the team just solves everything....but I'm skeptical.

This is my point about being flexible about the tactics. You have to adjust to the players you have available. If that means booting it long by the goalie because the CBs and #6 can't pass out of a press, then do it. If that means that you abandon the 4-3-3 that you love then so be it.

GGG's weakest part of his coaching is his game prep. The team rarely looks ready to play coming out of the shoot. GGG does do better at in game adjustments at half time but that is far too late in a WC group stage game. We might not have the hardest group but this group of players still needs to be playing at its best for 90 minutes if we hope to advance.

Hopefully things will look better against Saudi next week.

I expected a lot more continuity from this starting XI being so close to Qatar but was let down in the performance. If you look at the true powerhouses of the world which we want to be considered as one they rotate starting XI consistently unless it is a major tournament and they find an ebb and flow within the first quarter hour. We cannot do that as a team and it is frustrating. To reach the next level you have to play without missing a beat with whatever XI are on the field.

Go down 1 - 0 early to Wales or England and if they tack on a second in Qatar put us down for a goose egg. I did not see anything to get excited about in Qatar from this squad today Nothing
