US Men's National Team (19 Viewers)

Weston McKennie starts for Juventus today
It’s his 23rd UEFA Champions League game, passing DaMarcus Beasley and tying Jermaine Jones for second-most by a U.S. international.

45 Christian Pulisic
23 Weston McKennie
23 Jermaine Jones
22 DaMarcus Beasley

Wetson started but was subbed at halftime with Juve down by 2 to Maccabia Haffia, where Cohen is starting in goal.

Reyna dresses today and is available as sub. Pulisic is a sub today. Dest a sub as well. CCV starting

Obviously it is way too late for this cycle, but he is going to open eyes for next cycle if he keeps performing. This was a big game for him and by all accounts he played extremely well. Lots of scouts are going to see things like this which may help him move.

Obviously keepers can play for a while, but he's already 30.

he will be 33 for the 2026 WC, which as you said is not that old for a keeper.

Granted he is going to have to make a move quickly to a bigger league though if he wants to get an opportunity with the next coach.

This is a good piece of trivia if it holds true

Cameron Carter-Vickers captained Celtic in UEFA Champions League today. I believe he's the first U.S. international to start as captain in a UCL game.

great article focusing on the Reyna Scally long time bond.

Reyna: “I would probably say I’m a d*** too when I play, but that’s how it is.” :lmao:
In other news, 'water is wet'.

My first thought was Cherundolo. Just checking Wiki pages, it looks like he almost certainly captained Hannover in several Europa League games but I don't think they played in the Champions League during his run as captain. Reyna was captain briefly at Wolfsburg but I think that was before they got good and started playing regularly in Europe.

it is disappointing how rarely Jesus uses his speed

1. Cade Cowell, 10.18 m/s
2. Luis Diaz, 10.17 m/s

4. John Nelson, 10.11 m/s
5. Yimmi Chara, 10.04 m/s
6. Alvas Powell, 10.02
7. Patryk Klimala, 10.010
8. Jordan Morris, 10.009

Wait, seriously? I never would have guessed this in a million years.

The key to the speed stat is "sustained speed". Morris has very little quickness but after he lumbers for about ten steps he can really move, but that is very rarely effective in today's game. Nips appears to be "faster" than Morris but that is more due to him being so much quicker. If it was say a full 100 yard dash type of thing Morris would win but again, relatively meaningless in today's game.

Jesus on the other hand, can fly from his first step. I remember he opened it up once in a international game this year and everyone was like "woah, where did that come from....?" He uses his burst so infrequently that it makes me feel like he can only do it once a game with out wearing himself out...

speaking of Morris, if Reyna, Pulisic, Aaronson, Weah and Nips are all healthy, I don't think he should get a spot on the 26.

Although Nips does not give a ton of versatility comparatively.

Reyna and Aaronson can also play the 8. Pulisic and Aaronson can also play an old fashioned 10.

Weah can be a traditional 9. Pulisic and Gio could probably do a false 9.

Nips is really only a winger although maybe in the biggest of emergencies he could fill in at rb. That is probably a stretch though.

This was probably the best team goal the US scored during this qualification cycle. Jedi saves it early in the build up dealing with a difficult bounce on the pass from Steffen.

It is disconcerting that the team can look so professional at times and then look so discombobulated at times. I guess age has something to do with that but we are getting very close to the time where we can't blame our youth on the incompetence we see in the players skill level (which is separate from coaching issues.)

a couple of snippets below:

I asked Berhalter how many players he is still considering for the World Cup roster. He tells me to give him a minute. He opens up a file and does a quick count. “Forty,” he says. The power of spreadsheets. (I asked if he could type in B-R-O-O for me. Berhalter chuckled but said nothing until I moved on to my next question. Sorry. I tried my best.)

In Qatar, the USMNT will play three games in nine days. (Wales, England, and Iran are in Group B with the U.S.) FIFA increased roster sizes from 23 to 26 players and teams will be allowed five substitutions rather than three to help lighten the workload, but this compromise introduces more strategic wrinkles for coaches. “That will impact squad selection,” Berhalter says. “That will impact how we manage the games. That will impact how we feel about guys who haven’t been playing 90 minutes every game [for their clubs], because you can get them off and make subs. All of that is going to come into play.” More planning, in other words.

Let's get on the record now. What are you looking for in Qatar?

Me:
  • No overthinking it. Dance with the ones that brung ya. Everyone who plays is in a position they've played before, and played for the US.
  • Players who have obviously failed the opportunity get few/no minutes. Lletget, Morris, Long (sorry), etc.
  • The team is ready to play and looks lively, active and energetic.
  • We play as a team and move the ball (CP isn't trying to dribble 17 guys from 60 yards for example).
  • We don't turn the ball over in our own half a bunch.
  • We create chances from the run of play.
Give me these things and I'd sign up for it today. Basically I'll be happy if it boils down to Goals vs xG, good/bad breaks, good/bad calls, injuries, and etc. I just want the team to play well and not beat themselves.

I like all of that (but I think you (and the rest of us) are going to cringe when Long starts 2 of the group stage games)

My hope boils down to 1 simple request. I want to have the ability to get out of the group when we start the last game against Iran.

can we come up with the 40 he has on his list?

Keeper: Turner, Steffen, Horvath, Johnson
Fullbacks: Dest, Jedi, Scally, Yedlin, Cannon, Vines
Centerbacks: Zimm, Long, Richards, CCV, EPB, McKenzie
DMs: Adams, Acosta, Johnny
8's: Weston, Musah, LDLT, Tillman, Milhailovic, Roldan
Wings: Pulisic, Aaronson, Weah, Reyna, Nips, Morris
ST: Jesus, Ginger, Pefok, Pepi, Haji

That is only 36.....not sure who else......Busio/Sands/Moore/Bello maybe...?

For those not following the other thread, it looks like Reece James may be out of the WC. This should be a positive for the US as I feel like James would be the English RB that is most likely to shut down Pulisic.
