US Men's National Team (3 Viewers)

So, I just tuned in, but lineup I'm seeing online is a 4-2-3-1 with Balogun up top, then Pulisic/Reyna/Weah behind him and Musah/Johnny sitting behind them in front of the back 4.

Interesting to see if they play that way.

This is what a pay to play country looks against straight class. We need to do better as usual.
While this was once a BIG issue, it no longer is the case.

Many of our players like Musah, Balogun, Dest, Jedi, CCV, Lund, Johnny etc etc all were developed abroad. Some like Gio and Pulisic left very early to go to Europe. And the rest all mostly come from the academy system which is free to play for all MLS sides and I believe most of the USL sides as well.

There may be a very rare player like Turner who does not focus on soccer early that breaks through later but going forward, the vast vast majority of US Nats will either be dual nats or academy players who moved up and went pro.
I meant its all the rich kids in youth we push up (as a country), because they can pay for it.
like who?
Six to twelve year old to begin with. It's worse than ever.
that sucks.

worse than ever... I kinda doubt, given what andy's mentioned regarding academies and the guys we're seeing on the national team.

when he and I were coming up, definitely. no kids of color anywhere- all middle class suburban kids. and even the city kids were mostly kids with money and means... even if a kid with ethnic background. district, state, regional and national youth teams... all middle class, primarily white. watching our youth setup for the last bunch of years- that's changed in a big way with loads more hispanic and black kids. maybe they're all middle class who can pay for it? I dunno.

we had to take our kid out of soccer as it was just too expensive.

league fees and travel costs (gas/food/hotels) was just insane. he wasn't going to be great or anything, but we make 140k and couldn't afford it.
I was at my daughter's tennis clinic tonight watching money go down the drain. I feel your pain there.... and try tennis if you want to really set fire to your income.
I'm afraid my daughter is going to want to play volleyball...

1. Echo the comments about Balogun's goal.
2. Gio seems more adept at riding challenges than his injury history suggests.
3. Lund is no speed demon yet seems to bring more than Scally, even given that Scally faced a tougher opponent.
4. Dest making a case to not see the left side ever again.
5. Turned it off before Turner's save, hope it makes the highlight reel.

Besides the 2 goals, Reyna was 29 for 30 passing. I can even remember the one as it was a pass over the top to Weah that was overhit. He was also 5/8 on duels and 2/3 on tackles. That's a pretty ridiculous stat line for a half.

we said it last cycle and it remains true this cycle. If the US is to grow from a ~top 20 team to a true top 10 team, it has to come from Gio finally ascending to the player we all hope he can be.

Weird game. Did not see this coming.

Apparently Wes was the problem all along.
This is great but I think we all can acknowledge Ghana has been putrid. Note that this does not appear to be a one off either. They registered 0 shots on goal in their loss to Mexico.

But the US is running rampant. It could have been 6-0 easy.

If I am not mistaken, the next window will be arguably the most important games of the cycle for the US as it will be the games that see if they qualify for the crucial Copa America next summer. I hope GGG is learning what he needs to.

Yeah it's weird. He looks sort of plodding out there, but he's been fine. Not sure if it's just the way he moves or what.
High soccer IQ. Knows where the space is. Not a terribly dynamic left back, but a pretty big step up when you consider we've sent guys like Sam Vines and George Bello out there.

Didn't he underhit a ball with the outside of his foot to Weah as well (which was intercepted)?
I think they called a foul on that, right?

I guess that's right. They called advantage on the Pulisic foul and then called it back when Gio underhit the pass.

And I seem to remember at least one time in the Germany game that Scally cut off an attack by beating his man to the ball and dug it out of the corner. Not negating the overall comments about his speed in general, just saying he showed a burst at least once the other day.

Regardless, whatever it takes to keep Dest on the right instead of the left.

Yeah. It was a pretty piss poor effort though and I thought on replay, pulling it back was wrong of the ref.

Dest continues to build his case that if the US are expected to be on the front foot, that he has to be on the field. He is effectively a 5th attacker.

I still have no idea what to do when the US won't be on the front foot.
