US Men's National Team (16 Viewers)

Well I wanted 3-0 and I got it but I never expected this script.

What an awful first half. All possession and no chances, just terrible.

Even when they were not scoring in the second half, everything felt so much better offensively until the dam finally burst.

Now all they need is one 1 on Monday and its over because of the away goals rule, T&T would need to score 5 and that's not happening.

Got to give Pepi a lot of credit, the guy can't find starting minutes at club or country but keeps finding ways to score.

Pepi even made history today

@OptaJack

Ricardo Pepi is the first player in @USMNT history to score 5 goals as a substitute in a single calendar year. Rescuer.

Stats;

xG
US 2.0 (thought this would be higher even with the useless first half)
T&T .02 (not sure where this comes from, this was as 0.0 a game as I have ever seen for one team)

Shots
US 26
T&T 1

Possession
US 75.1%
T&T 24.9%

Ugly. Don't know what else to call it.

Thought T&T got screwed with a soft second yellow. Most refs wouldn't give that until a guy had done a couple of those, or if it was on a clear breakaway.

Balogun was terrible. I don't know if he just didn't care this game, but I didn't see a hungry goal scorer in the middle today. Weah and Pulisic's subs were terrible. I can't remember one positive thing about either Tillman or Paredes tonight.

This game points out one big area we are lacking. A big target forward. We had 90% possession. Just pelting balls into the box... only for the 5'8" guys in the middle get outjumped all game. We have to have a better plan than that for teams parking the bus against us. This will get very very familiar otherwise.

Oh and tip of the cap to T&T, they almost pulled that draw out.
Let him have it, guys.
what did I say wrong?

I hope they wave it off - go ****ing earn it. This is a horrific performance.
Tbf, T&T have done what they've needed to do... Very organized.

And not a single US player has stepped up.

Normally I’d agree and no offense to T&T but I don’t want to hear anything close to that from GGG - how about, “this isn’t good enough - we were bad”. I don’t care how organized they are- it’s freaking T&T at home up a man.

We beat them 6-0 with BJ coaching a C-Team.

This is just awful. And it's not like we aren't just rolling them. T&T has zero shots. Not shots on goal. Shots. Sure they are down a man, but they didn't even begin to threaten before that.

Agree with all of that.

You mean a soft 1st yellow?

I watched the u17 teams win over Burkina Faso right before the T&T game.

Pretty underwhelming. Thought the Bescimas/whatever 15yo was really poor, unfortunately. kept dribbling into guys and losing it super easily...despite scoring a goal. Guys that popped... GK (biudeeaux or something), RB (Veerhoeven?) And one of the CMFs... Corcoran?

I did like that they were playing unusual balls through middle into seams... Mostly out of the back or from the holding MF. Didn't just play the obvious ball wide, square or back.

Panama beat Costa Rica 3-0 on the road tonight.

I thought the semi final match ups were predetermined by a draw but they are not. They are going to rank the 4 quarter final winners based on the quarter final results.

Lots of teams will bunker against us in CONCACAF but even so it seemed extreme last night. Two lines of 5 and 4 sunk deep, even at full strength. It was extraordinary. I mostly agree with your comments but I do give the players some credit for their patience and I think the scoreline is fully earned.

The second leg may be easier to manage since there will be no reason for T&T to sit ultra deep for 90 minutes. Since we likely only need one goal to seal advancement, we should be able to find a little more space to operate.

Had to tape and watch it late last night due to stuff going on...

First half, yeeeesh. It's like they were having a contest to see who could move the ball closest to the goal without getting a shot off. Waiting and searching for that one killer ball I guess, but I really didn't understand what the plan was. Thought the whole front 3 was pretty poor in the first half.

Second half was a lot better even before the goal, although I got more and more distressed at the complete lack of finishing. Despite all of the pressure and opportunities, by the 75th minute I was getting seriously worried about 0-0.

Glad the boys got it done obviously, but super bunker or not, you'd like to see something a little more convincing against T&T playing with 10 men. Who was MOTM? Maybe McKennie? Nobody really stood out.

I was glad when Musah started taking some shots and running at people, as it seemed they were just playing off of him knowing he would make a short, non-threatening pass. Reyna was fine, but I was hoping for more from him.

Another weak set piece performance. Other than the Ream header, did we get anything decent out of all of those corners?

U17 notes on completed groups

Group A: Morocco and Ecuador advance (Panama finishes last in group)

Group B: Spain and Mali advance, Canada finishes last

Group C: England and Brazil advance. England wins group but loses game to Brazil. New Caledonia by far worst team in tournament with a ridiculous -24 gd

Group D: Argentina and Senegal advance.

This was something I was thinking about last night.

it was apparent to all watching by the 20th minute that the needs of the game were different from the norm because of the extreme bunkering. The US was not generating any real shooting offense but we were generating consistent corners that our big men were not getting near (I thought Gio's placement was ok).

Given the state of the game, I considered swapping CCV for Robinson. CCV was playing fine but he never gets near an offensive cross, it is not his game. Robinson is probably one of our best headers on the team.

Weston is a good call. Another would be Jedi who worked hard all game and picked up goal and assist.

Dest for some reason could not break down his defender 1 v 1 all night but he did put in about ten dangerous crosses.

How would you guys grade GGG for this one?

I land some where between a C and a C+

Even though Paredes and Tillman struggled, I don't ding him for starting them as I think everyone agreed that they should start before the game commenced.

I heavily ding GGG for the skinny formation and more importantly taking so long to change it. Even at half time he did not make changes. It was not until he subbed in Pepi up top with Balogun and told Aaronson to run through the box non stop did the shape finally cause a tiring T&T problems.

I know patience is a virtue against a bunker but I think alarm bells should have been ringing sooner than they were when we were generating zero shots on net with non stop possession in the final 3rd.

I thought Martino made a very interesting observation last night.

He effectively said that the US winning the ball back immediately every time they lost possession was counter productive because while that is normally a great thing, in this specific case it allowed T&T to hold their deep shape and limit their running for most of the game.

The VERY few times the US had free flowing movement up the field were directly related to the VERY few times T&T got the ball into our end of the field.

I am not sure it would have made much sense but it would have been fun to see for science how the game would have looked if the US ceded some possession to T&T if for nothing else to get them out of their double deep block.

American Soccer Secrets

@AS_Secrets

Source: Bayern Munich has identified Nestory Irankunda, Nimfasha Berchimas, and Bajung Darboe as three players they would like to have to lead their attack in the future. Nimfa, Darboe, and Nestory are of high interest to Bayern — Today, Nestory signed with Bayern for £3M.

Bajung Darboe is currently on a training stint with Bayern Munich's second team. This isn't the first, and it definitely won't be the last training opportunity Darboe has at Bayern. Nimfa also previously trained with Bayern but is currently at the U17 World Cup and couldn't go.

Nimfasha will not be going to Europe on a permanent transfer anytime soon.He will likely stay with Charlotte until he is at least 18 years old. The idea is to integrate him into the first team before he leaves. The situation has been compared to Alphonso Davies.

Just read a rumor that PSV interested in activating Dests buyout clause in his loan contract... 10m in Jan window.

Eta... I've also read a bunch of "Barca in need of RB and considering bringing him back based on his play at PSV" rumors.

I’m simply resigned to these tactics. Anyone expecting a better result now than in the WC is banking on our players improving (which should happen given most are just starting to hit their primes). Maybe that happens and the tactics minimize each players deficiencies (that’s the best case), but they certainly don’t accentuate their strengths.

:goodposting:

Why anyone would think Ragnick's 4-2-2-2 is a wise system, esp when a team bunkers in is beyond me. But I digress.

Sadly Paredes and Tillman didn't look ready. A few times they were in good position and the pass came to break down the bunker and their touch or lack of attacking the ball let them down. But they should have started, need to find that backup starter for worst case scenarios.

Gio showed what could have happened if he had been involved in the WC (Not opening any comments on what happened or his parents/GGG, just what could have been).

They missed CP running at players for sure. And if he can beat a player, pass and move he can help take this team to the next level. Gio and Balo will play those one twos that help break a team down.

Credit to T&T for their effort and holding off as long as they could. As soon as 1 went in you knew the let down was coming and the US would get more. Nature of holding on as long as you can in this game.

If the US U17's win group (by beating France tomorrow) they will play Senegal
If the US U17's finished second in group (by not beating France), they will play either Germany (likely) or Venezuela (less likely).

Germany and Venezuela play in the last game in the group. Venezuela must win to top the group.

Mexico still has a punchers chance if they win, no?

Yes they do, but my post was about teams the US can play.

Mexico can not play the US in the next round though no matter what the results are tomorrow.

Mexico can advance either in 2nd or as one of the 3rd place finishers.

Pretty disastrous U17 game. We rotated heavily but two of the three centerbacks we brought are now suspended for the knockouts. Banks - our best CB by far - got a yellow and is suspended. Hall - our captain - came on as a sub and got a red in stoppage. The only remaining CB is Hawkins who has been pretty rough.

And of course, we lost 0-3 to France and now will play tournament favorite Germany in the first knockout round.
