Johnny on the bench in a 4-4-2 for Atleti. Even for the 4th game of the season it feels like a must win for them.

I fear that Johnny will lose his starting spot soon as Simeone realizes that Johnny will not win him games.

Gio playing the 10.

Feels ever so slightly off the pace, which makes sense given his rust. But otherwise...
- seems like hes given room to roam and attack in the attacking third. I havent seen hom asked to do much defending...hopefully thats intentional, and not him being lazy.
- still has his touch and vision. Has made a bunch of really nice dangerous attacking passes around the field.

He has a kinda Zizou float to him, where on TV it looks like hes not trying or moving, but probably is. There were a couple of moments where he beat his defender and was attacking space with the ball at his feet...looked iike he was practically walking, but on screen he was leaving guys who were clearly sprinting. Maybe its his hunched posture and the eay he doesn't extend his arms when he runs.

But a good game from him...involved and positive.

Unfortunately, Gladbach looked aimless. 3rd straight scoreless match. Hoping Gio can help right the ship there with some goal creations.

I dont think Scally played.

CP starts on the bench.

Id heard chatter about the amount of travel he had to do making him a question...but theyre also down 2 attacking players, so seeing RLC start instead of him up top is a headscrstcher.

Eta...same chatter mentioned Gimenez...but hes starting.

Yeah bummer as I was looking forward to watching CP while I kept an eye on the smoker from the porch.

On one hand, don’t want to see him run into the ground on Match Day 3. On the other, it’s not obvious where he fits with the new scheme, and one worries because when more players are available it’s going to be kind of crowded up front for Milan and somebody’s going to lose out on a bunch of playing time. Hopefully it’s not Pulisic.

CP and Leao are their main attacking guys and both are rypically wide players. Gimenez is their only out and out 9, although they have been running Leao out while Santi hasnt been productive. They brought in another attacking player for a chunk of money...name escaping...but hes neither a 9 nor a wide player...more of a 10, but has played all over.

All that to say, CP will be a featured player. This is just them taking care to not overuse him...i think/hope.

Nkunku is the new addition. Seems kind of similar skill set to Pulisic and as you said bought for a decent fee. I haven’t really seen him play, though, so I could be wrong there.

Thats right...the chelsea guy. Hes an attacking player and not a 9, so yeah- hes in competition. But they need bodies, so drom ive read, it will be more of a support to have another guy- therell be minutes for all of them

Pulisic looked good off the bench. Two really nice passes that could have been assists with better finishing, and a nice move in the box where he got pulled down enough where they could have called a (somewhat soft) penalty.

And in the wrong thread, Modric is still so, so good.

Pulisic looked in top form. Was really incredible on the ball today. He played two perfect passes. One to Santi, who might be the worst stiker in Serie A at this point. 99/100 strikers in the top 5 leagues finish that set up easily. Then he found Nkunku on a beautiful chip pass right in front of goal and Nkunku was fouled, twice on the same play. After a lengthy VAR reveiw, the penalty was rescinded to the shock of everyone. Allegri got a red card for his protest. Also, Pulisic had a beautiful dribble and was in on goal when he was pulled down. It looked soft, but the defender definitely kicked his foot as he was running by him and pulled at his shoulder. That's given as a penalty by any competent ref.

So, Pulisic conceivably could've had 2 goals and an assist in 30 minutes tonight, assuming he's still taking penalties for Milan. Honestly wish one of those obvious pens would've stood, just so we could've seen if he was still their PK taker.

Theyre going to need to give Modric a break...hes far and away their nest player and being relied on to cover a lot of ground

Oh I didn't see the foot kick and that would make it more definite, yeah. Defender was definitely beat.

I'm with you on the ruling on Nkunku's attempt. I couldn't believe they overruled that, as he got clearly fouled twice. The only way I thought it might get overturned is if they called him for a handball when he brushed(?) the ball trying to get up. Can't really blame Allegri for losing his mind after that decision.

CONCACAF Player of the year nominations

Jonathan David, Edson Álvarez, Raúl Jiménez, Angel Sepulveda, Malik Tillman, Manfred Ugalde
Sepulveda has been a near journeyman his whole career. To get nominated at this level at 34 years old is crazy. Good for him.

Very surprised Pulisic did not make this list, as he had a very good year. I wonder if sitting out the Gold Cup had some effect here.

that was surprising to me too.

not a big year for concacaf guys. might be Raul's this year, given his story and what was a truly resurgent year including playing a big part in the GC (if that mattered). between him and David for me.

Dest and Pepi started for PSV in Champions League game. Down 1-0 18 minutes in. I just turned it on, so no idea how they're playing.
2-0 at halftime. Haven't watched either but will check in for 2nd half.
I didn't end up getting to watch first half, but sounds like Pepi may have been to blame for both goals
Blaming a #9 for both goals?

Not saying it can't be, but....

Just turned it on at 0-3...at home against what has to he seen as the easiest opponent. Catastrophic. Watched Dest try to take somebody on, lose it, and rhen chase the guy back to his defensive third before fouling him.

Highlghts ..he fouled a dude to give up pk for 1st, lost the ball cheaply that led to 2nd

Chris Richards subbed in during the second half and scored in a league cup game today in a 1-1 draw with Millwall.

Richards also scored his PK as CP advanced in pk's.

Musah starts against PSG today.
Johnny again on the bench.

Not looking good.
I don't think he would have started any way, but he did not dress today due to an injury.

"United States men's national team star Cardoso, who joined Atletico from fellow La Liga club Real Betis for a fee of $35 million (£25.7m) in the summer, reportedly sustained a sprain during the club's training session on Monday and will not travel to the UK for Champions League duty."

Only thing going for him is that they lost and Barrios gave up a late corner (that he shouldn't have) that led to the VVD game winner. But he didn't get in the game and Koke came on instead of Johnny. That said, Atleti was pushing for an equalizer, and Johnny is not that guy. If Atleti gets a lead and wants to hold it, Johnny might be selected over Koke.

or, you know, he was hurt and didn't even travel...
