US Men's National Team (16 Viewers)

Dest is getting some early preseason action with the big club

========

USMNT Videos‏ @USMNTvideos 22m22 minutes ago

Sergino Dest vs 'Quick 20. Still 18 years old, played admirably in Ajax's first friendly of the season. Had an assist and a penalty drawn and probably should have scored. Good start to the preseason for Sergino

Tomorrow night is going to have some added interest as there is a decent chance the US has to play Panama again in the semi finals if the US can get through the quarter finals.

Jamaica is the only team that remotely worries me on this side of the draw.   Mostly because if Leon Bailey.

Group C is brutal, but I would be a little bit concerned about El Salvador because they seem to be comfortable defending with 10  for 90 minutes. No goals and only 2 shots on goal conceded through 2 games.
ELS are balancing on a knife edge with this tactic.

45 minutes more and they make the quarter finals but if Honduras knock one in during the second half, they are out and Curacao are in.

Here is the pretty goal that kept Curacao alive tonight deep into injury time

Honduras put 4 on the board in the second half as ELS crumbled.

The US plays Curacao in the quarters if they at least draw with Panama.

if the US loses to Panama, they play Jamaica in the quarters.

I have to knock on wood here because I know the US is not a strong team, but I don’t think I could have imagined a much easier path to the final. I guess I just don’t follow Concacaf much, but these are some terrible teams.

no good, very no good :(   From @Scienceguy

This sounds ominous from Hannover coach Mirko Slomka. Really don’t want to see Soto and/or Gloster waste a year on the bench. Slomka already said that he has "little desire" to train Soto as a professional if the US boy does not sign a new 96 contract.

Holy Internet drama Batman.  Did anyone see the Deadspin piece and the controversy around it yesterday?  I'm going to paste the reddit post about the article here but I'm removing the link to Deadspin.  The article was a click-bait piece of crap, if you want to visit the article then follow it from the Reddit link.

Anyone else see the hit piece on the USMNT from Deadspin yesterday???

So this new freelance writer for Deadspin wrote an article about how she asked all the USMNT players their position on the USWNT request for equal pay recently and listed each and everyone one of their responses with "no comment"

-removed Deadspin link-

Someone in the comment section quickly pointed out that the USMNT collectively released a statement regarding this three months ago indicating that they are in full support of their demands and posted the link to an article indicating so.

https://ussoccerplayers.com/2019/03/usmnt-statement-on-wnt-players-lawsuit.html

That comment was getting a lot of attention....right before Deadspin DELETED IT!!!!!. In fact several others who had screenshotted the comment, posted the screenshot and called out Deadspin for deleting the comment....those comments got deleted as well....

It's get crazier....the Author posted a link to her article on Twitter where others had also responded with how the USMNT had already responded to this three months ago with the same article that the commenter from Deadspin posted prior to being deleted, including Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi!!! She commented on the Authors post as well as tweeted her own response

https://twitter.com/PadmaLakshmi/status/1143184657263017984

The Author will not acknowledge any of this or even respond back to Padma and she's still pushing her narrative. She's also indicating that all the angry emails she's getting in response are from Men who don't care about the USWNT which is ####### bull####. One of the commenters from Twitter best said it, why go after a group that's in full support of you.

The reporting on the equal-pay issue has been almost universally atrocious.  This "journalist" was obviously desperate to generate views and clicks by making it a US Men v US Women issue.

Can anyone point me to a reliable resource on that lawsuit? (@NewlyRetired)

It is beyond atrocious.  I never read Deadspin but I had no idea how low the journalistic standards were.

A few US Men's players, through some intermediaries like their agents even said the author never even contacted them so it looks like much of the article might be fiction.

I can't because I don't think one exists.

The biggest problem for me is that no one in the media seems willing to touch the issue that many of the women actually get paid more money than the men due to the fact that US Soccer pays their club salaries, which they don't do for the men.

Since the media and the SJW's are turning the equal pay suit into an unfollowable story, I think the new CEO position at US Soccer might be more interesting.

Many are pushing/hoping that we can get some new blood from outside US Soccer to come in but the prevailing thought seems to be that Berhalter (Jay) will get promoted to the spot.

Do you guys think we see the same lineup for the 3rd game in a row tonight or do you think we might see some changes?

US Soccer's preview tweet featured pictures of Miazga and Roldan.  I don't know if that is a hint or not.

The US has only one player who is in danger of missing the quarter finals due to yellow cards and that is Weston.   Maybe Berhalter sits him tonight in place of Roldan?

A couple of statistical notes from US Soccer:

•Should either Arriola or Zardes score in Wednesday’s match against Panama, they would become the first USMNT player to score in all three group stage matches at a Concacaf Gold Cup.

•With his next appearance, veteran midfielder Michael Bradley (22 GP) would move into a tie with Kasey Keller (23 GP) for third on the USMNT’s all-time Gold Cup caps list.

One of the biggest friends to soccer, much of it during a time when no one in the media cared about the sport, is retiring.

Bob Ley from ESPN will be retiring at the end of the month.  He called many games for the US on TV back in the day.  I even remember supplying him some stats via email in the very very early days of the internet from my home library which he used on telecasts.

Good fortune for the US if they win the group.  We'd get Curacao in the next game, while Mexico/CR and Jamaica/Panama would mean two of the better teams in the tournament go out in the quarters.

Also, the US has won six and Mexico seven of the 14 prior Gold Cups -- but Mexico is 4-1 vs the US in finals.

Who's the only other team to win a Gold Cup, and who did they beat in the final? (It's hard, you won't guess.)

Extra bit of fun:  Brazil is 0-2 in Gold Cup finals.

I talk about this all the time at work with people that don't understand the situation.  They are always shocked when I mention this aspect.

"Lightning Leon"...Roma almost bought him from Leverkusen last year...

I don't understand why this won't be reported.  Even some media people who know this won't mention it.   As such I assume I may be misunderstanding something in how the payments work.

From what I know it appears like the women want the same general pay as the men AND to keep US Soccer also paying the club salaries.

And to use years where the USMNT failed to make a World Cup and the USWNT *won* a World Cup as the baseline.

I find that I know more about the topic than most people who engage in it but I stay out of the conversations because I think it makes me look misogynistic, which I am not.  I have noticed online that the SJW's can get real upset when some facts are used that may hurt the women's case.

I'd like to see Jozy get the start and pull him at half or 60 depending on his fitness- he needs the minutes to iron out the rust for the next round.

other than that... lets limit CPs minutes/getting-kicked or sit him.

Nips and Boyd have played a lot- see if one or both can get a rest. Swag too.

Yeah, this part really bothers me. And like others, I see no upside to getting involved in the conversation. Anything I say will just be countered with "The women win more" which is irrelevant.  This issue of the women's club salaries being paid is 100% ignored.

I like a lot of deadspin content, but so much of what they're doing now is just designed to appease the SJW's.  Its exhausting. I'm certainly not a social conservative, but this kind of nonsense really makes me annoyed by the liberal agenda.

I come down pretty safely on the SJW side of things, but tend to stay out just because I can't find good information.  From the little I do know I'm skeptical of the arguments the women are making, but I'd hate to get the facts wrong.

US Soccer could have avoided this slight conflict of interest issue of paying the USWNT club salaries.

They should have just simply given some money to the NWSL as a seed, as they did for MLS way back when.

That would have been fair and equitable and would have served the league as a whole instead of just serving a few players.

Then they simply could have focused on how best to create a more equitable partnership at the National Team level.

===================

One big mistake US Soccer made was stating publicly how much money(in exact $'s) the men would share in bonuses as part of the WC.  They never, ever should have stated it that way.  The entire thing should have been stated as a % of the money received from FIFA for advancing in the WC (since that is almost certainly how the exact $ was arrived at).

That way they simply could use the exact same %'s for the women's bonuses and very few (outside of the extremists) could argue if it was simply based on % of money received from FIFA as you advance through a tournament.

USMNT Only‏ @usmntonly

"Timothy Weah and Lille have reached an agreement on a five-year contract. But negotiations are still stalling between the two clubs. We are between 7 and 10 million euros - % on resale at the moment

that was bold :)

I guess if the US was already the group winner, this would have made more sense to try.

I do think we will see a handful of changes though.
I don't expect 11 changes, but the fact that there is very little separating Jamaica and Curacao (particularly if Bailley is injured), and the fact we may be facing Panama again one week from today, almost certainly is a consideration in tactics and lineup tonight.

I get that Jamaica have hardly looked like world beaters, but Curaçao conceded like 45 combined shots IN THE GAMES WHERE THEY GOT A RESULT!

When you also consider that they’re just now seeming to find the right positioning between McKennie and Bradley, I just don’t get the appeal of a bunch of subs.
