US Men's National Team (27 Viewers)

It was Chelsea.  They're all giddy about Mason Mount because he's had a couple of flashes this preseason.  He's less than 2 months younger than Pulisic.  They expect Pulisic to take Hazard's spot, yet they're excited that Mount took a couple of guys on the dribble during preseason.  The difference in expectations is eye opening, although for the $75M, it probably should be.
Mount was a locked in starter for Lampard at Derby last season and just signed a new five year contract last week, but I doubt many expect him to start for Chelsea this season. Barkley will be ahead of him for sure, as will Loftus-Cheek if/when he comes back. No one expects Pulisic to replace Hazard, but under the circumstances, with the numbers they have at the wings, and with that price tag, he’s going to be expected to contribute. It’s really a perfect situation for a confident, driven athlete like he seems to be. As we all said last winter when he signed, it’s going to be almost entirely up to him whether he sinks or swims on the big stage. The honeymoon is already over.

I've seen more of him than that... But not a ton.Strikes me as having his dad's vision and touch on the pass (sublime) but more explosive off the dribble and shot.
His dad was not an "athlete" per say as defined by speed and quickness and jumping ability.   He was a plodder but he had wonderful touch and vision as you mentioned

Every coach mentions Gio's athleticism immediately.   It is strange because he does not look either quick or fast and yet he seems to glide by players like he is on skates.

Because of his age and dad, Im always surprised by how size/speed.

looks like two Yanks on Reading this year.  Miazga is official and it looks like Novakovich is going to make the team this season.  Since Berhalter is likely to be watching Miazga, this may help the big man get noticed if he plays well.

Let's not forget that Gio's Mom was a national team player herself.  Only six caps, but part of those dominant Anson Dorrance coached Tar Heels teams with Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly.

I am not a quick to fire guy but I find this completely reprehensible as a fan.  If this is true, and my gut tells me it is, someone in the federation has to call Berhalter and tell him to wake the #### up.

Did we learn absolutely nothing from Jonathan Gonzalez?

:wall:

If this is some how not Berhalter's fault but some moronic policy at the federation level, then we are a bigger mess than I realized.

You can't possibly expect the federation to call all those prospects, Andy. There has to be at least 20 of them. And they're all over the place. That's a lot of calls.

Is it possible there is an under current of racism in the USMNT?  It appears there is a history of ignoring Hispanic players in both development and recruitment.
that would kill me if true.  But I think it is simply stupidity instead.  I think Dest has said something similar too about no contact from on high.

You know what for the life of me I still can't figure out?  Berhalter has almost nothing to do between camps besides follow players.  How long does it take to write one text each week telling the player you watched their game (or their highlights) and let them know what you think?

There are probably only 20-25 players you have to do this with until they are cap tied.  It is so ### #### easy and it really means something to these kids.

I don't usually like to go outside of the sport for help, but it is clear the NCAA recruiters understand the process for b-ball and football.  I think US Soccer needs some some help if they can't figure out how to do this themselves.

You know what makes this even worse?  This is not some dual national kid who barely has any contact with US Soccer and was developed entirely outside the country that no one can see play.  A player like Araujo is on Fox or ESPN nearly every week developed by and playing for one of the biggest teams in our domestic league.

No kidding.  Won't someone think of the long distance phone charges?  I mean, some of the calls are probably to an international number too.  I mean with a 100 minute 100 text phone  100 mb Data plan, they can't be expected to contact these "potential players".

We need to hire Saban
@_Susaeta

I once heard Nick Saban talk about tracking how long it has been since he last contacted a recruit, even committed kids. These are hundreds of kids, but he never let 7 days go by without some sort of contact. Pretty sure Saban is busier than the US coaching staff

There are some German articles speculating that Reyna may break the Bundesliga record as the youngest player to play a league game.   Nuri Sahin currently holds the record.

Can't afford him.  How about those Arizona coaches that were charged for paying players and breaking recruiting rules.  Seems like they're willing to do anything to get the guys in.  We could afford them.
That would fit right in with FIFA.

speaking of recruitment, one of these articles talked about how Dortmund landed Pulisic.

They first went to see him play at the U14 level, but he was hurt and did not play.  They must have had enough tape on him because then after that, they flew the entire family to Dortmund to show them the program.

I am sure it must have been impressive.  They could point to their history of giving young players a chance.  They could show off one of the first Footbonaughts.  And to cap it all, I think think this was right around the time Pulisic starting breaking through to the first team.

IT"S A LOT OF GUYS TO CALL ANDY. THINK OF THE DATA BEING USED.

This is Joel Sonora's kid brother (another of Diego's sons)

Brian Sciaretta

Congrats to New Jersey-born Alan Sonora who has been included in Independiente's roster for the upcoming Copa Sudamericana game Universidad Católica. The midfielder is looking for his pro debut

Looks like Reyna may have impressed during the US games.  It is being reported that he is being considered to join the first teams training camp in Switzerland.

USMNT Videos

Ajax play their first competitive game on Saturday vs PSV. Mazaroui is back in training but it doesn’t look like Tagliafico is, so the LB position is still probably Dest’s. Lozano played for PSV on Wednesday, so a Dest vs Lozano matchup is certainly conceivable. Should be fun.

Future USMNT

Looks like midfielder Kyle Scott (21) will be signing with Newcastle United. Scott was already pictured at St. James Park earlier today and has reportedly completed his medical. He played at Dutch 2nd Division club Telstar on loan last season from Chelsea

This kid signed with Schalke last month.  Looks like he off to a good start

@FutureUsmnt

Matthew Hoppe’s last 3 games for Schalke U19s:

7/20 vs. Schwäbisch Hall: 2 goals

7/21 vs. Nürnberg: 2 goals

7/25 vs. Carl Zeiss Jena: 1 goals

Someone to really keep your eye on this season. Guy is a lethal finisher.

What's his background? German American, grew up there or here, etc.

American born and raised.  Came out of the Barca Academy in Arizona.  He was one of the top scorers in the DA the last couple of years in his age group.  Had planned to go to college but decided to trial in Germany where Schalke said "hey look another Yank, sign him"

Uly's dad making no one feel better about what Araujo said  :(

Julian is not the only player that feels the same way

you want the US federation to have to upgrade their data plan, andy? pretty selfish.

Italy and the Netherlands still paying for missing the WC.

The US just got a large bump from the Gold Cup.  I think they were the biggest movers into the top 25 jumping 8 spots.

The table temporarily favors Africa, Concacaf and South America as those teams got extra bumps from their confed tournaments.

It's absolutely maddening.  I honestly don't understand the 'let them come to us' or they'll figure it out mentality.    There is a lot wrong with the USSF; especially with how youth clubs are treated.  But, this aspect of recruiting, or lack thereof, completely baffles me.

It checks every single box of maddening.

1) it is inexpensive

2) it is easy

3) it takes near zero time

4) your competition is doing it

5) player after player says it means something to be contacted

6) it is non binding

Why doesn't Goff or one of these journalists hold GG and the rest of USSoccer's feet to the fire about this crap? Every single interview or whatever this should be the first question. Why can't they wrap their heads around how important this is? We have a massive border with a country that's crazy about the sport and a ton of Americans of Mexican descent come out of the two states that produce the most talent. Why is this so difficult for them?

Maybe we should just all call the office of US Soccer daily and ask the question. For months. Every day. All of us here.

Scuffed is trying to land either Berhalter or Stewart for his podcast.  He says it will be one of the first questions asked.

Twellman or Lalas have the biggest followings though and better access so maybe one of them will think to ask some day.

Wahl is too busy with his women's crusade to pay any attention.

Goff as you mentioned or Ives make sense too.

And this is not an FFA only thing.  Every part of US Soccer fandom is wondering why such a simple task that is unbinding can't be done by a group of well paid people who have a ton of time on their hands....
