A small part of me kind of wishes, just to see what happens, for US Soccer to say something like :
"if the salaries are meaningless to the discussion, why don't we drop the salaries entirely, and make everything else equal* ?"
I know this can't happen because it could have a chain effect that causes the NWSL to fold and then US Soccer would be blamed for that.
* By making everything, including the bonuses, equal, US Soccer will almost certainly have to lower the men's bonus's and not raise the women's.

I see their point for wanting to separate salaries out of it- I thought they were trying to make a claim about national team games, including and especially the WC, not being equal to the men. even though the WC is FIFA payouts, right? US could and should make equal percentages out of that to the men and women for WCQ, WC, knock-out games, winning, etc- the percentages will be equal at least- even if the amount coming in likely never will.

I should note that I don't know the specifics but I assume it is based on achieving a certain number of caps over a defined time period to be eligible for the US Soccer paid salary.

IMO you can't separate the salaries. It is something they collectively bargained for that the men don't get. It is absolutely part of their compensation from US Soccer especially when we know the NWSL could never pay the rates.
The women clearly do not want equal %'s. They want equal pay.
That is certainly easy enough for everything outside of the bonus structure. The per diem are absolutely meaningless to the men these days. Even a player like Zardes is making $1.4m at club level. They can easily solve this to make it equitable for all involved.
The bonuses are a much tougher nut to crack since US Soccer has no say in what FIFA pays out. If the women insist on equal pay here, the only way to do it is to lower the men's bonus structure. While on the surface that may suck for the men, it might turn out to also be meaningless since the real money comes getting very deep in a WC, something that is unlikely to happen for the men.

While I am reading them translated, the Dutch fans calls to their federation to persuade Dest to make the one time switch are getting louder and more consistent.
Ironically they sound a lot like we do in that they are worried their federation is not doing enough to convince him.
I feel like our window is closing quickly. I am going to be bummed if Dest is not called up in September by Berhalter.

I haven't visited this thread in a while, and this article may have already been posted. I'm not really following the arguments of who pays who and where the player money comes from. But, the difference in what each group brings in should really end this discussion.

"The coach has sometimes told me after a good finish that you cannot teach it. I think I have a nose for goal in the box. Scoring goals is my favorite pastime, it happens instinctively. That's why playing as a centre-forward suits me best, but I play wherever the coach wants me to.
"The main thing is that I have more playing time. I hope to make my breakthrough soon. If it happens in the new season, it would be great."

That is really odd. There was an article on bundesliga/com literally yesterday about Mendez and how he could be the next US prospect to break through in Germany.
How long until we lose him to Mexico?

feel like I just saw an article that said playing time would be hard, with heavy competition up front.
but this feels more recent- and indicative of pre-season play (I think what I read was pre-preseason)... nice to hear he's combining well with his strike partner and getting chances- not to mention getting solid runs with the starting, 1st team when they're "trying to find their rhythm".
it does sound like they play two up front- and he seems like a guy who would do better with that, using his skills and soccer-sense more than flying solo without outstanding strength or pace.

tbh- I kind of see them as similar players. I'd like to see him with somebody busier who is more likely to make those big diagonal runs behind and run the channels- someone to open up the field more than he can (although I suppose the wide MFs can do that too/instead). let him work the spaces and find the combinations rather than make the big runs.
eta: but it would be fun to see the two fo them together... I'm just not sure how that would play in GG's system.

Yup, good points. I can definitely see him being a more technically sounds version of Altidore (I think Sargent's touch is superb). Hopefully with better hamstrings.

It's the combo of soccer smarts and skills that seem similar.
I've been watching Jozy a long time... One of the most technically and tactically sound combinations of player the US has ever produced imo. For such an apparent physical specimen, he just never, or rarely, has played how he looks. But the touch is there.

I am trying to remember to be sure but I don't think GGG almost ever uses a two striker system at either club or country.
For me, the best way to look at Sargent is not in comparison to Jozy so much but more as whether he will become an upgrade to Zardes.
With Jozy's age, health record and GGG's lack of faith in him going 90, we need a very good back up (better than Zardes imo)

I have no read on Gio now. I was a 100% convinced he would be with the U19's all year, before the summer.
Does he have a legit shot at the first team? I love that I am even asking the question.

it's pretty nice to be having this thought- although I'd be shocked if he stays with the first team. either way- great that he's getting these minutes... and the coach is clearly giving him a good look.
he was the first one off the bench too.

Depends on where Dortmund view him. Right now he's playing the #9. If they think he's a 9, then the only two others on the senior team are Alcacer and Gotze(who plays about 5 positions). So from that point of view, yes he could be seen as a potential bench player.
However, for his development's sake, I think he's better served playing for their U19 team. That way he'll get time on the wings as well as at #9, plus he'll play twice a week instead of watching people play.
Like you said, it's awesome that it's a question, but I'm for whatever speeds his development more over what looks better on a resume.

I am always on board with what ever gets a player more minutes, but this might be one of those extreme rare times I would bend.
I don't know the exact rules in Germany but there is also a chance that he trains with the big club and sometimes dresses for Bundesliga games, but otherwise also plays for the U19 to get his games in.
That might be an ideal situation if it is allowed.

This is the part I can't get past. He is getting minutes relatively late into the preseason where you would think if the coach was not going to roster him, those minutes would be better served going to other players he wants to roster.
I guess we will know how serious the coach is after this group of friendlies is complete.

If they think he rates 1st team... wow. chances are, he'd get minutes as a sub, cup games, injury. I'm still not expecting him to stay with the big boys.
but- I'm with andy in typically wanting young players to get minutes... but him getting to train with those players every day, battling to try to get a position- priceless. I do think it helped Weah's development getting to pratice every day with Neymar, Mbappe, etc. and I think Gio will gain from this, even if his minutes are limited. but if he can train with them AND get regular games in with the youth squad- even better.

I have no idea how this actually works- but that's the exact same thought I had. or... this is the last time for the coach to see the kids before they go back down to reserve or youth squads, so he's giving them a proper run, giving the starters a run, but letting the actual backups get fit in training. dunno. that doesn't make a ton of sense, but as the italians say- "bo".

I know we talked about how it was strange that we could not find any information on the CBA online. Now we know why.
It turns out they men did not sign a new CBA yet. They stated this in a statement today about the ongoing equal pay issue.
I assume they are still playing under the old CBA rules for now.

At least on paper since Tuesday all RB professionals are back on board. Amadou Haidara, who received extended leave for participating in the African Cup with Mali, entered training work on Tuesday as the last professional in Leipzig. With Philipp Tschauner is a new keeper in front of the signature

Also Emil Forsberg and Dayot Upamecano, who missed the friendly against Stade Rennes last Friday, took part in the team training again on Tuesday. Forsberg had to suffer several times during the preparation, because he had complaints to the Achilles tendon. And Upamecano complained after club information about knee problems, which were apparently cured on Tuesday, however.
Two offensive forces, however, were missing on Tuesday. Jean-Kevin Augustin missed the public unit because of an infection, Matheus Cunha because of a concussion apparently suffered against Rennes. But both should be ready for action again until the season dress rehearsal on Saturday against Aston Villa.
This is not true for Tyler Adams. In the rehab of the Americans, who could practice because of a persistent adductor injury, the full season preparation only limited, the progress is much smaller than originally thought. It is now clear that the midfielder will miss the start of the season with the cup match in Osnabrück and the Bundesliga kick-off at Union Berlin

fanatic fans over there are deep into their academy/youth/reserve teams, plotting out the future. I don't think we're there yet... we are in here, but not at large.

We have some interesting issues regarding this topic:
1) for many of us older fans, the US National team was our club team before we had any MLS team to follow. I know for people like myself and @El Floppo we follow MLS teams but they will never have the same feeling as following the US
2) related to number 1, MLS is still one of the newer leagues in the world and even with that, it is really only about the last ten years that any one cared about it, for the most part.
3) The Klinsmann divide may never be healed with some fans agreeing with JK's public stance that MLS sucked. For those fans, they will forever favor the US over domestic play
4) Our massive melting pot creates the largest diversified soccer fandom in the world. That diversity leads to having people follow numerous types of soccer leagues, with no real focus. Most countries in the world focus on one league first. We are very spread out.

I think its a mixed bag.
I think many Euros do follow their youth prospects very closely - the Euro U21 is a BIG tournament (and the U20 and U19 get attention also). But, most of the attention is focused on support of a particular domestic team, and then by extension, which players from your team (or its academy) are on the U21 (U20, U19, etc) national teams.

Ajax's twitter just released each players number for the season and Dest was given one. I don't understand if that means he has made the team or not but it looks positive.
