Some good news about CCV - Spurs played a couple of closed door friendlies today, senior team and Academy team. CCV playd 45 minutes for the senior team.

I still have not heard anything about his plans for the season - he would be at best 6th on the depth chart if he stays at Spurs, and would spend most of the season with the U21s v. Going out on loan somewhere. But it looks like he is continuing to progress. Seems certain that the U.S. would call him in for the Olympic qualifying, and maybe even a senior team call in to a European game sometime next spring.
More good news for CCV - it looks like he will travel with the squad to Denver for the MLS all-star game.

Not sure that he will get in the game, with 2 sets of CB ahead of him, but it looks like he has also played cm/dm recently in at least one closed-door friendly, so could get in the game in that role.
:kicksrock: Now he has been placed on an U21 roster for a tournament in France. Better for his development, but not so good if you wanted to see him play.

WTH? Losing to Ghana, Ghana and Germany by a goal in the WC aren't bad losses. Neither is losing to Brazil in the Confed Cup (even after going up 2-0). 5-0 to Mexico should be #1 IMO.
It is all based on your definition of bad I guess.

The Germany loss for me was by far the worst. I will remember that loss well beyond the Jamaica loss last night or Mexico 5-0 (which I had already forgotten about so unimportant it was).
What do they mean by top 10 losses? Last night was a disappointment but wasn't the end of the world. Not a chance in hell I'd say it was a more important loss than that smattering of World Cup losses, blowing it in the 09 Confed Cup final, etc.

Hijacking a bit, but I've watched a few NYRBs games since Miazga came back. Kid is already one of the best CBs in MLS and he just turned 20. He reads the game beautifully, particularly at stepping up and stopping attacks before they build. Now, obviously VIckers is 3 years younger still, so the thought of him developing into something REALLY special at 20 is enticing. But I think both of these kids are going to get a ton of caps.

Yeah, I'd like to see them partner for the U23 Olympic qualifiers (and the Olympics themselves). That could be the stepping stone to potentially securing back-up roles in 2018, and starring roles in 2022

I have to start watching the pre and post game shows. It seems like I am missing some silly stuff.

Tim Howard just released a video clearing up some confusion about what he said about returing to the national team.

At the end he calls both Lalas and Fridel clowns and would get to that later.

What did they say about Howard?

Here is the video

http://bleacherreport.com/uninterrupted/tim-clears-up-confusion-about-national-team-announcement
Howard has a beef with Freidel going back to his transfer to United. And hes not wrong about Lalas.

I dont know the whole story but there was a lot of hate toward Howard for his timing on his wanting to come back statement. A lot of people want to blame him for Guzan's bad performance vs Panama. Sad thing is he always had said he was coming back and would be fighting for his spot, if JK would allow him to.

I see two surnames that stand out for not being Latino (Yarbrough and Bornstein). Were you referring to one of them or someone else?

I see a bit of Miazga too... agree about his positioning. good in the air and on the tackle and developing his foot skills with the ball. one ongoing weakness is he gets too handsy trying to establish positioning man-on-man... gets called a lot on it. hopefully, unlike Jozy who still does the same thing, he'll learn to be more subtle and less grabby.

Speaking of Yarbrough, do you get him on the field for the 3rd place game if for nothing else, to cap tie him?
I was thinking the exact same thing. Only downside in that is the pundits all wondering if you're doing that in response to the miscues (or perceived miscues) of Guzan against Jamaica.

I thought he was talking about Club America.

Regarding that list of top 10 losses. The one I thought would be on there was Poland in the final game of the 2002 group stage. We had upset top seeded Portugal and tied with South Korea (host nation) and needed a win to win the group and a tie to clinch a spot in the knockout stage. I remember the hype being really high as Poland was the worst team in the group and had lost their first two games in blowouts.

And then we gave up something like 3 goals in the first 8 minutes. And Portugal and SK were tied 0-0 for forever and all they had to do was play for a tie to eliminate us on goal differential. SK saved our butts by scoring late to eliminate Portugal. If that hadn't happened, I'm sure the USA-Poland game would have ranked #1 on the list.

Now Wahl just re-tweeted something about October 9 at the Rose Bowl.

I'll be in LA that week.
Late last night he tweeted the date is official.
Why would we not schedule this for Columbus? Seems were always playing at azteca???
This is not a US controlled game. It is a Concacaf game. They don't care about a US home field advantage, they just want to make the most money they can.
Oh.

So, realistically, it'll be an 80-20 split for Mexico?

Do they give each confederation 50/50 of the tickets? So, maybe AO can request a larger allotment of tix?
At the Rose Bowl? 80-20 seems about right if Mexico makes it.

I don't know how or how many they distribute tickets to each confed but I am pretty sure the vast vast majority are just open for sale to anyone.
i was at the Gold Cup Final in 2011. It was more like 95-5 for Mexico. Great game for about 30 minutes. We were in heaven and then the bottom fell out.

was that the one at the Meadowlands?

I was there for that one... el suck. 95-5 is about right for that one too. I thought we lucked out sitting in front of a family (Mexican) instead of a bunch of drunk young guys. dad and other adult male were drunk from the opening kickoff, screaming/swearing the entire game and definitely trying to #### with the two gringos in front of them. we bailed after 4-0, to a volley of very specific swearing (my gb speaks spanish fluently).

#### mexico and their fans

eta: mine was in 2009.

I actually think that it's about like a 13 seed beating a 4 seed. If you figure that at least one 12 seed usually wins a game every tourney, this would be a bit more uncommon than that. But not so uncommon as to be unheard of. Its just important to remember that in world football, the difference between the 70th best team in the world and the 20th best team in the world is way, way less than the difference between the 5th best team in the world and the 20th best team in the world. Once you get away from the very best teams, you're in the realm where the better team would win 6 or 7 out 10 times (with a draw or two sprinkled in).

agree with 13-4 or 12-5.

losing at home is the bigger issue. I feel like Jamaica away is usually a tough game, without much separating the teams. at home... usually not as much separating the teams as this game, that the US did a good job controlling. outside of the goals.

that call on guzan... still has me saying wtf. I notice that kind of play a lot in various games- but when the GK is clearly outside of the box with his entire body (irrelevant to hand ball or not, but visually much more obvious). I've never seen this called.

I can't get exorcised over a call that's correct by the letter of the law. It would be one thing if the ref ignored the same violation by the Jamaican keeper, but if its called consistently by that crew, then it's on Guzan.

my point is that for it to be called consistently, it would have had to have been called... somewhere in the world by somebody.

again- never seen this call made... regardless of whether it was the correct call or not.

unrelated, the same crew had no problem letting the Jam GK hold the ball for up to 15 seconds

The same thing happened in the USWNT's favor at the 2012 Olympics. The Canadian goalie was called for the 6 second rule. The Canadians said, "That's aboot the craziest thing I've ever seen! That's never called!"

And we all said, "Oh, did you say something, I couldn't hear you over the sound of our national anthem."

The comment he was fined for was apparently, "I say this with all endearment, but this is a ridiculous tournament."

Manchester United have taken New York Red Bulls defender Matt Olosunde on trial with a view to completing a transfer deal for the talented youngster.

The 16-year-old is training with the Red Devils and will be hoping to impress enough to earn himself a contract with Louis van Gaal’s side.

Olosunde is comfortable at both centre-back and right-back, and has represented the United States since the age of 13.

The defender is expected to be part of the nation’s U17 squad for the World Cup in Chile in October and is seen as a replacement for Reece James – who completed his move to Wigan Athletic earlier this week.

That statement was pretty silly to get fined for imo. He talked about the heat, the travel, the short turn arounds and the grass on turf stuff right after he said that. Nothing he said was untrue or said with malice. He even mentioned the term endearment.

Noob question: If I'm trying to use wikipedia to get up to speed, is today's draw for the fourth round, prior to the hexagonal?

Never mind -- I see this is the third round.
