US Men's National Team (9 Viewers)

This seems out of left field.........................

But since there is not much else to discuss, lets run with it.  If JK does leave, lets assume he takes Herzog with him.

I have noticed that very quietly, Jason Kreis continues to work with the US as an assistant coach.  If JK does leave after the Copa, it seems to make some sense that either Kreis or Tab or both see the team through the last to 2 qualifiers in September in case US Soccer needs more time to replace before the Hex starts.

I think if JK leaves, that solves the possible financial concern I have mentioned before as he would likely have to forfeit the rest of his contract.

WTF?  This story makes zero sense to me from any angle.  Why would JK leave now?  Why would he want the Soton job?  Why would Soton want him?

Fine by me. He has no idea how to pick a lineup, which is the most important part of the job IMO.
Results are the most important part of the job to me.  And he got them in line with the talent.

Arena -- Bradley -- JK... all with similar results.  You could make a pretty good argument that the coach doesn't matter all that much as long as he's not a complete idiot.

Money for one thing.

The second I guess is to re-establish himself at the club level.  JK is 51 and doesn't figure to stay in his current position past 2018.  He needs another gig to carry him through retirement and I don't see him taking another job in the USA.  Southampton isn't a top tier job but there's talent there.  His reputation in the UK is probably better than in Germany.

Third, don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

you follow betting.  Is this just some sort of lemming where one person thinks he knows what is going on and it turns into a tidal wave?  I don't follow betting lines much but I have to think that is a MASSIVE movement in the odds over such a short time period.

and now a snarky comment:  Maybe JK wants to follow his own advice to get out of his comfort zone and challenge himself against the best?

;)

The bold makes you wonder why we are spending so much money then.............

Honestly I can see it being an FU to his critics more than anything else.  Probably gets old and he clearly doesn't handle criticism very well.

It would take more than one big bet to move those odds, NR.  And it sounds like there were a bunch of bets -- all from around Soton, which continued even after they cut the odds.  Could be a baseless rumor that spread but I'd think it's likely there's something to it.

btw... was poking around at Oddschecker to see if there were "next USMNT manager" odds and saw this:

Canada 4/1, Colombia 13/2, Mexico 13/2, USA 8/1.  The bet?  WC 2026 Host

From Simon Peach - fairly well connected journo when it comes to Soton:

#SaintsFC have already decided against Rudi Garcia & I understand Jurgen Klinsmann will not be coming to St Mary's

More places seem to be picking up on this.  Can you guys who bet understand why so much money would move to JK on just a whim?
I'm not an expert in betting, but for me odds on events like this don't mean much unless the bookmaker is also offering odds on "stays in his current role with USMNT."  If that isn't offered, there's no real market on JK's future, and the fact that the numbers made a big move one way or another is meaningless imo. It seems possible the bookie could take in more at 10-1 than at 50-1, just because people see the move and think there is something happening.

could be that he's going to the Hamptons for break after the copa. you got bridgehampton, easthampton, southampton...

ok- JK's legacy... yeah, true he hasn't really pushed the program into any new heights. I get the sense that pretty much any team from pretty much 94 to present would all compete pretty equally. that said- he's opened the door for our german american friends who in all likelihood would never have come over: Fab, Germany, Brooks, ... ok, and Green and Chandler too. and undoubtedly others who see that there's a legitimate shot at going to the WC and maybe even playing/scoring for the US... others who will likely show themselves over the coming years- if JK is still around.

http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/14576761.Pellegrini_will_NOT_be_Southampton_manager/?ref=mr&lp=6

SAINTS have decided against bringing in former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini as Ronald Koeman’s replacement.

The Daily Echo understands that despite Pellegrini being considered a big favourite for the role for some time, the club have made the decision that he is not the man to take the reins at St Mary’s.

The same goes for German icon and USA boss Jurgen Klinsmann, who has appeared as the bookies’ favourite over the past 48 hours.

Any reported interest in Klinsmann, the former Germany and Bayern Munich boss, is said to be wide of the mark.

Local beat writers are saying that JK is not even on Soton's short list. Keep in mind that Rudi Garcia and Pelligrini have also been the betting favorites this past week and both have apparently been dismissed as candidates by the club. Current rumors keep circling back to Claude Puel, who just finished up a four year run at Nice. Saints brass says they plan to have a manager in place by July 4. They're a pretty deliberate bunch, which can be frustrating, but there's not much argument with the results they keep getting by not rushing into things.

Both Jones and Brooks came to the US system before JK took over.

Jones was capped under Bradley in 2010 and Brooks came from Rongen getting him to one of the US youth teams also in 2010.

I know JK does not rate him much as a player but I have always kind of liked him.

And with the acknowledgement that it should be time to look for some alternatives for Bradley, this rumor (if it comes to EPL fruition) might get him another chance.

Sunderland and Swansea (along with Newcastle and Aston Villa) are said to be talking to Reading about a transfer of Danny Williams.

For me, it may matter - as it may impact who is called in for the game... But, my kids want to see the USMNT.  I'll take a day or two off of school for them and we'll have a blast.

Only thing I'll have to decide is whether we do the march to the match or go in early with the hopes that my kids can get autographs (apparently, autographs are the lifeblood of 11 and 12 year olds). haha
Not sure you'll have any luck before the match.  However, my son got autographs after the Gold Cup match in Frisco by waiting by the team bus.  He has Zardes, Evans, Gonzalez, and Guzan.  Some of the others signed, even Dempsey, but they didn't make it to us.  Before the match they warmed up outside the stadium on a practice field and did not sign.

Cool.. thanks for the heads-up!   My kids have been itching to get some autographs since one of their friends went to the World Cup and happened to be staying at the same hotel as the players .  It's a constant competition.  haha

I am not saying either side is correct but the way the US and Mexico handle coaches are about as different as one can get.

Mexico just came off one of their longest (if not longest ever) undefeated streaks at 22 games and then had one really bad game against Chile.

They actually considered firing Osario (who himself also considered resigning) based on this one game but they held a press conference today to let every one know that he will remain as coach after "heated discussions".

Now compare that to how US Soccer deals with these things.

Talking to one of my Mexican clients yesterday and he was saying how the Mexican media hasn't liked this coach for a while, but he kept winning.

Lots of complaints about player positions, rotation and not looking good..but winning.

Funny hearing the same things we say about Klinny from them....while they hadn't lost in 22 games. They didn't feel like the coach was putting the players in the best position to win despite the streak.

Somewhere in the middle would be fine with me.

Interesting!..................

=================================

Jurgen Klinsmann was installed as the odds-on favorite to become the head coach of English Premier League soccer team Southampton on Thursday, casting some doubt over his future in charge of the United States national team.

London bookmakers were thrown into a panic by a “massive” flurry of wagers on Klinsmann to replace former boss Ronald Koeman, who accepted a contract from EPL rival Everton last week.

As of Thursday morning, Klinsmann was generally priced at 1-to-3 odds, having been available at 40-to-1 earlier in the week.

Klinsmann has been in charge of the U.S. program since 2011 and this week took the team to the semifinals of the Copa America, where it was defeated 4-0 by Argentina.
Oh Please!

That sounds insane

The US has a single person who makes the coaching hiring/firing decision.

In Mexico it is a group (made up of I believe Liga MX owners) who make the coaching hiring/firing decisions.

How do most other countries handle this decision?

I thought the Mexico complaint was that the coach played players in their non natural positions, ironically he played them there vs chile and well.... I guess the coach does know best

Let's hope they are announcing that the Copa América will be a joint Conmebol / Concacaf tournament held every four years. It would be even better if it were always held in the USA.

The total revenue (tv + match day) for this tournament is double any previous Copa.

JK's comments regarding the Argie loss and the upcoming game.

========================

United States coach Jurgen Klinsmann has challenged his players not to be so "nice" when they look to sign off from the Copa America Centenario with victory over Colombia in the third-place playoff.

Having raised expectations following qualification to the knockout stages at the top of Group A and a quarterfinal win over Ecuador, the hosts suffered a humbling 4-0 defeat to Argentina in Houston, where they fell behind to an early goal from Ezequiel Lavezzi and then a fine free kick by Lionel Messi.

Klinsmann, though, feels his men can produce the required performance at the University of Phoenix Stadium on Saturday night when they will aim to put things right against Colombia, who recorded a 2-0 win over the U.S. in the opening match at Santa Clara.

"There is of course a little bit of disappointment about the game against Argentina because it was a huge opportunity to get to the final, but Argentina that night were simply too strong for us. But we had a talk already with the players and the staff to regroup now and to give it a go in Phoenix," the German said in a Q&A session on his official Facebook page.

"At the end of the day we were too nice [against Argentina], it took us a while to get into the game physically.

"When you play these top teams you have got to be physically on the edge. We had too much respect, but there are a lot of good things you can take from a game like that, and we have talked about that with the players as well.

"Hopefully we can take that straight into the Colombia game, get third place and turn it around."

Klinsmann, 51, has been linked with the vacant Southampton manager's job, but he remains under contract with the United States through qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

Looking ahead to the rematch with Colombia, he said: "We approach this game with a lot of determination and hunger.

"We played them in the first game, learned a lot in that game and now we are really ready to give it a go and make it happen that we beat them."

Midfielders Jermaine Jones and Alejandro Bedoya and forward Bobby Wood could all come back into contention after serving one-match bans for the semifinal.

Colombia, meanwhile, will look to respond after a 2-0 defeat by defending champions Chile in Chicago, which saw a two-and-a-half-hour delay because of a thunderstorm and heavy rain at Soldier Field.

Defensive midfielder Carlos Sanchez was sent off for two yellow cards and will be suspended.

Captain James Rodriguez, meanwhile, could be rested ahead of scheduled shoulder surgery this summer.

"We should move on, and we must recover emotionally to have a great match for third place," Colombia coach Jose Pekerman said.

For those that understand such things, does the Brexit vote make US players moving to England easier or harder or does it have no effect?
I have been trying to read up on it, but from what I can tell no it wont.  What it will do is make players from the EU now have to apply for work permits like players from the US and other non-eu countries already do.  Complicates moves from Germany, France, etc...

Johnny Foreigner out

Hmmm, any guesses?

Jonathan Tannenwald on Twitter: "Inbox: @sunilgulati, @VicMontagliani and @CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez will have a press conference in New York tomorrow."

turned out to be nothing.

Just a lot of back patting from the massive amount of revenue generated (which Sunil is using as justification for the ticket prices) and that every one would love to do this again some day but no official talks have occurred.
