Screw it, I saw we use the power of the FFA and let this thread coach the USMNT.  We'd be WC champs in no time!

 
I still wonder why JK not only took the US job to begin with but then re-signed for a longer term deal......

* He hates the media here, often referring to them ignorant

* He seems to treat the fans with the same sense of disgust, again referring to us as ignorant

* He absolutely despises the local domestic league which supplies some of the talent for the national team

* He has to know he is hated at almost all the high levels in the sport in the country, making his ability to make changes much more difficult

* He does not seem to like the lower level quality player we have at this point in our development in the US

* While the money he gets is obviously very good, I still think he could have received pretty close to this else where.

Does it all come down to simply wanting to be able to be as close to his family in California as possible and still pull in a great salary?

How many coaches, make this kind of money, and have been in one place for 6+ years?

Those, but you forgot one.  Ego.  He's got a huge ego and the ultimate backing to that would be bringing the lowly USMNT to the promise land.  It's always about him.  His opinion, decisions and way.  There is no one here to truly challenge him.  Donovan tried and lost.

I'd say that most other top countries have top coaches and players that can challenge the reign of about any coach they appoint.

Donovan didn't try to challenge him.  He decided to take a break and then he busted his ### when he came back and dominated the Gold Cup like no American had.

I'd say big time footy is more like the NBA where the coach better damn site win over the players' trust than it resembles college football where the coach has almost complete power unless he really does something outrageously egregious.

Should current players...no?   But do you think that if Ronaldo didn't like the Portugal coach during Euro qulaifying he'd have been the coach during the Euros. 

I was also talking former players and coaches as well.  Basically people that have the draw to change the status quo with their influence inside of their country.  It doesn't exist in the US.

apples to oranges

if there were a player in the same universe as Ronaldo currently on the US men's roster then he should have some input.

i don't have a problem with the coach being in charge. then there's order. if players are sniping, second guessing, controlling things behind the scenes then you have a mess just waiting to implode. 

someone has to be clearly in charge or you're going to wind up regretting it

We're on totally different topics.  I was responding to why JK stooped so low to coach the USMNT versus glory in Europe.  I said with that it had to do with his ego and because the US was weak, he had no challengers to his authorit-i.  

You have to remember his time at Bayern.  He was ousted because players and others had influence.  Not happening here.

I looked up his bio a few weeks ago when we were discussing this and found this quote interesting - from 2006 when he (reportedly) declined to renew his contract with the German National Team following the 2006 World Cup. 

"My big wish is to go back to my family, to go back to leading a normal life with them," said Klinsmann, 41, who is based in California.

"After two years of putting in a lot of energy, I feel I lack the power and the strength to continue in the same way."

Its interesting that, having said this in 2006, he took on the USMNT job in 2011 (after his brief stint at Bayern in '08-09.)  

I find it somewhat strange, but my impression is that German fans have no respect for him as a manager. Loew gets credit for whatever success Germany had in 2006. At the time, losing to Italy in the semi-final (in extra time) was (I believe) considered a success based on the team's form at the time, but my impression is that most Germans don't look back fondly on that World Cup because, as hosts, they would want to do better. His time at Bayenr of course is seen as a disaster, and he's been mocked by players and management alike - even though, on the field, they weren't terrible that year, just a bit down. When Bayern stole Hummels from Dortmund this year, my German buddy just viewed it as finally making right the stupid mistake Klinsmann made that year when he let Matts go cheaply to a rival.

Based on all this, I have a hard time believing he would manage England. Surely he considers the USMNT job an extremely lucrative semi-retirement gig with very little pressure or expectation compared to Die Mannschaft and Bayern.

I agree with this.

As a related aside, why do you think his buddies keep talking him up in the media about the England job?  Do you think he is looking for another extension from Sunil or do you think it is just a way to say "see you American fans and media, people all over the world like JK, you should too"

The continued uncertainty surrounding Sunderland isn't good in the short term.  They've been very quiet this summer and the Big Sam situation isn't helping at all.

Yedlin is still Spurs but doesn't figure to see action there.  He performed better because Big Sam was flexible to use him as a wingback.  Moyes is the favored domino for the Black Cats right now and I don't see how Yedlin would fit in to Moyes' usual set-up.  Moyes typically favors 442 (I think) and although guys like Baines and Coleman had success as attacking fullbacks, they're very different from Yedlin.  Roberto Martinez is a longshot for Sunderland but I recall him using players like Yedlin on the wing at Wigan.

Yedlin just turned 23 so there's probably still some development there but he needs playing time.  If Spurs loan him to a Championship side, that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Here is the MLS all star team as voted by the fans.  Look at all the big names on there and the rookie Rosenberry sticks out like a sore thumb.  Kudos to @Ted Lange as your Bartenderwho was the first to mention his name in this thread a few months back.

This is not the actual roster or the starting lineup against Arsenal, just the 10 players voted by the fans (Villa got on via a different mechanism tied to playing the EA FIFA video game).

I don't know for sure, but if I had to guess most of the offers Sunderland have made or have received are going to be tabled until a new manager is appointed.

Yedlin himself today said he is unsure what is going on.  He likes the rumors about Sunderland (calling them "awesome") but from what I can tell that is as far as they go at this point.

I saw Rosenberry live last night - I was excited to see him after the hype I've read/seen, but I was a little let down from what I saw.  Maybe it was by design since it was a meaningless friendly, but he was in full attack mode from the start and made lots of mistakes/mishandles.  I can't remember watching him actually on defense much at all. :shrug:

I have not seen much of him myself yet.  How many minutes did he get to play?  I know some of these exhibitions can have enormous substitute patterns.

He only played the first half and started at RB.  Since my oldest son is becoming a fan of his due to wearing same number and position, I noticed right away at how high he was playing.  I wonder if they made it a point to get him work on the attack as it seemed that they focused on building up the right side with him and Letoux.  He did do pretty well in the midfield, but once he got into CP's 3rd, he'd screw it all up and either give the ball away or make a crummy pass.  

I'm not sure if it was Rosenberry or not, but #8 on CP (not sure who he is) was chewing up the right side defense at the beginning of the game, but then disappeared.  It was the first time I noticed the real speed difference between the 2 sides.

No link, sorry.  My mom works for one of the building companies doing work on the tract or home.  I think they do the flooring (carpeting, etc) for new homes.  She told me the paperwork was all in Klinsman's name.  Its another city in Orange County so he isnt moving far and it could be a house for his relatives.  She wouldn't know if he sold his NB house so what you are saying makes sense.

he was fantastic last season.

Montreal started him very slow this season, having him miss as many of the turf games as possible to have his legs hold up, which at his age and the tough grind that MLS travel causes makes some sense.  I think he has only started 8 of the 18 games for Montreal.

IIRC, he came over in the middle of the season last year... and hit the ground literally running. couldn't remember him putting in as many miles as he did with Montreal. carried them on his shoulders for a stretch IIRC. I wonder if the effort is still there... seems like his MO typically.

I enjoyed watching him play when he was at Chelsea, and his name if fun to say, but he also seemed like he was either phoning it in or ready to phone it in before he left them. Since MSL games are still being broadcast, I hope to see him play again.

Montreal plays NYCFC on ESPN this Sunday at 5:00pm.  

The game on the 31st against DC is on NewsChannel 8 locally in the DC area.

You can probably catch him for at least a few minutes in the all star game against Arsenal.

How would England not already know this?  JK has good and bad qualities for sure, but he's never been one to compromise on his coaching techniques.  That should've been a given.

 
Spurs played another closed door scrimmage, dropping a 1-0 game to Fulham - but nice little blurb on Spurs's site:

 
The first period saw us move the ball around nicely without finding a way to penetrate the Fulham defence.
