US Men's National Team (8 Viewers)

Busio scored his second in 2 games today.  Terrible defensive mix up between keeper and defender and he slotted home the mistake.
Mixed feelings about Busio today. He played the full 90. He scored a goal, and he capitalized on a bad mistake by Cincinnati. He also was pretty solid on the ball today, and most of his touches were pretty solid.

But, he is not a very physical player. And he doesn’t seem too interested in playing any kind of defense in the areas where he tracked back. And that may have been by design. But I doubt it. Vermes wants his guys to play aggressive, and Busio did not do that today.

He was just there, in my opinion. He was solid, don’t get me wrong. But I didn’t see a world class player out there today. He’s only 16, so I may be being hard on him. But he is miles away from a Tyler Adams.

But he is miles away from a Tyler Adams.
While I am probably pretty convinced the likelihood that Busio becomes even half the player Adams is, is low, it is worth noting that Busio is around 12-18 months ahead of where Tyler was in terms of pro experience.

Adams only had 1 short MLS sub appearance before he was 18.    Busio already has 11 appearances and he is still just 16 (soon to be 17).   A lot can happen, both mentally and physically at that age over the next year and a half.

Pomykal is probably a better example.  It took him a while to blossom and now at 19 he looks like he may be ready to make the jump to Germany in the next 12 months.

As nice as the first was just for audacity sake, the second was pure class. First touch perfect off his head into exactly the right space and weight to set up the shot with the second...which he smoked from a tough angle. Loved it.
Looking at that 35-yard banger again, I'm noticing the first touch leading to that as well.  He's facing the right touchline and the ball comes to him as a pop-up, but he executes the chest and turn to immediately put it on his left foot and sitting up on the bounce.  I think the way he receives the ball is his very best quality, even considering he has a terrific left foot.

Weird...won't let me quote Scooby's last post... But nice pick up. I watched the videos on my phone and didn't notice that chest touch to set up the shot. So intuitive and perfectly placed...like with the header I mentioned. Real class. No mexi-whammy dammit.

Soto was the second youngest American to appear in a Bundesliga game, behind only Pulisic.
In keeping with the theme, Busio is the youngest player ever in MLS history to score in back to back games.

It is so odd when you think about.  When Weston went down I was thinking it would be months.  And now he is back on the field before either Adams or Pulisic.

He seems to be a quick heeler.  Every time he's gotten hurt, he's returned sooner than expected IIRC.

Copa America 2020 Draw and format is out.  People hate the format but I think it is perfect for the US next summer, if they get invited.   This will be the best prep they can get for WCQing.

==========

Group A: Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and 1 guest (all group games played in Colombia)

Group B: Chile, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and 1 guest (all group games played in Argentina)

Group stage is 5 games for each team, and top 4 of each group advance to quarter finals

Christian Pulisic is back in training doing solo work for Borussia Dortmund. He is expected to return to action against Freiburg on the 21st.

which teams are expected to get the invites, other than money draw, what other factors would influence which teams get invites?

Qatar and China are the expected guests.  Qatar airlines is a major sponsor of the event and Qatar is playing in the 2019 version of the Copa America.

However there is a problem which may hinder these guest teams.  The guest teams in these continental tournaments do not have the normal requirements from FIFA to the club teams to release players.  So if the US gets an invite, Berhalter may have a tough time getting a decent team on the field based on which clubs play hard ball.

"I'll go with whichever national team that gives me opportunities to keep on growing as a player and as a person," Pepi said. "The one that gives me the best opportunities and will always be there for me, the one who opens the door for me first is the one I'm playing for."

Multiple sources tell me and a club spokesperson confirms that the LA Galaxy have dismissed U-18 academy head coach Brian Kleiban. Brian's brother, Gary Kleiban, represents USYNTers Alex Mendez and Uly Llanez. Both left LA's academy to sign with German clubs in recent months

blackdot for how exactly the US will screw this up.

At least so far, both countries have resisted the temptations to senior cap tie these kids way before they deserve a call up.  I wonder though if eventually it will happen.    I guess this summer represents a chance to do this in the Gold Cup.

I don't know if the League of Nations is a cap tying event but if it is, we could see experimentation there as well.

Looking at Gold Cup tickets, and putting all superstitions aside for now, would it be better to go with the sure thing and buy tickets for a US game in St. Paul, or just go for gold and buy tickets for the final as Soldier Field?  Either way its going to be expensive.  I'm assuming, worst case scenario  in Chicago is its Mexico against someone else and I can probably dump the tickets and get my money back, right?

Tonight we get the draw.   If it is a complete minnow for the first game, maybe buying for the final is good.  Your theory of being able to dump the tickets should be good as long as you don't buy extremely high priced tickets.

But for me personally, I would love to see the US in that new stadium where they should have fantastic home support (we know how rare that is).

The ticket prices have clearly passed my by at this point in my life.  You guys know how big a fan I am but ### #### they are high.  The ticket prices for WC2026 are going to redefine obscene.

edit: One other thing to note, I think the first game in St Paul is a double header so you may see two games for the one price.

Uuuugly.  Read here for the details.   @Dinsy Ejotuzyou might be interested in this as you were asking about the issues in signing young players a couple of weeks ago.

The Gold Cup draw is complete

Group A: Mexico Canada Martinique Cuba

Group B: Costa Rica Haiti Nicaragua Bermuda

Group C Honduras Jaimaica El Salvador Curacaco

Group D US Panama T&T Guyana

No other group has more than 1 team from the last Hex and the US group has 3 teams.   I kind of like it.  We should learn a lot more from these games than beating Martinique 8-0.
100% agree.  It's an extra competitive game against a half-decent side -- could end up playing five games where we learn something instead of four.

ETA:  assuming the pitch isn't bumpy and wet, obviously.

for the people that did not get a chance to read the rule changes for the gold cup, the main thing to note is that the roster that is named for the first game stays through out the whole tournament.   No more bringing in new players for the knock out stage.

“Our objective has to be to try to win the tournament,” Berhalter told ESPN in an interview posted Wednesday. “You don’t know early on how the games are going to play out. But our objective when we bring the group together in May, it’s going to be, we want to compete for a championship.”

==================

The bold is interesting.  If Berhalter can truly start the camp in late May, that will give the Euro players extra time with him.  The MLS players probably won't be released that early but they all got plenty of time with Berhalter in January so that should not be a big problem.

Hopefully the full team will be released by the first friendly before the Gold Cup starts (which looks like it should be Jamaica in DC if the rumors hold true.

USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter was at the LA Galaxy practice today and I'm told that he has been keeping an eye on Joe Corona. 28-year-old signed for the Galaxy in March. Also told he also continues to be impressed with Sebastian Lletget, who he has already called up.

The RB Salzburg manager is moving to take over Munchengladbach.

That puts Jesse Marsch on the short list to take over RB Salzburg.

Marsch is likely going to be a strong candidate to be the US coach for the next cycle so this is an important position for him.

These are really strong words from Aaronson's coach.  I love the last line.

============================

"He’s been a guy that as a coach you can’t take off the field,” Curtin said. “He’s dominated games in Atlanta, against Columbus and some moments against Dallas. He just has left a really big impact and kind of is proof that too much in this country we get caught up in size and physicality when really it’s soccer IQ and knowing what to do and when to do it on the field and by the way he also runs and covers more ground than anybody so you can do both.”

“He’s been playing at a really high level and a level that our staff can’t even think about taking him out of games and off the field and out of the lineup,” Curtin said. “Often times in a professional’s career you get opportunity and you have to grab a hold of it; it’s cliche but Brenden has done that for us and I think it’s powerful too for kids in our academy to see that he’s on the field and impacting games.”

Santa Rosa native Miguel Avalos has emerged as the #10 for Mexico U15s. Stockton native Alex Alcala wears their #8 and LAFC's Donovan Palomares is their first-choice GK. A decade from now it will be interesting to see how much of El Tri consists of Americans

This should be the second of two friendlies before the Gold Cup starts.

CINCINNATI — U.S. Soccer is set to officially announce that the men’s national team will visit Cincinnati for a friendly against Venezuela on June 9, according to sources familiar with the details.

At some point there will be some push back in Mexico.  It may be fun to steal some Americans, but when you're starting 11 is all American, it defeats the purpose of a National team.

The tickets in St. Paul were sold out before the draw, just based on the knowledge the US would be playing there.  There seem to still be a ton of tickets available for the final at all price levels.  I bought two decent seats last night.  We love spending weekends in Chicago anyway, so I've just got to find something for my wife and daughter to do that night.  The worst case scenario for me is we see a cup final between two non-us teams, which will still be pretty sweet.  We went to two games at Soldier Field for the Centenario and the atmosphere was great.
