US Men's National Team (14 Viewers)

lampard thoughts after debut from football.london...

After his time with the USA in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Pulisic cut his holiday short to join up with Chelsea in the Far East and played the last 25 minutes of the match in Yokohama.

The winger showed some flashes of decent play on the left, and his boss Frank Lampard believes that Chelsea fans will certainly be excited about what is to come from the new signing.

Asked by ChelseaTV about how he felt Pulisic has done this week, Lampard said: "Good, good, he has been here a couple of days really in terms of training, so have been really impressed.

"He's comfortable on the ball and I think he should have had a penalty towards the end of the game.

"He wants to try to take people on, the sort of player the fans are going to like so we have to give him a little bit of time to adapt slightly.

"But the way he has trained, the way he has come in with his personality looks great so I am really pleased to have him."

we can't say it enough, but I think having our three best young players be continually complimented on their professionalism in training and work ethic and just generally seeming like good guys, I think is going to cause a snow ball effect.  If these three players all make a ton of money (which looks certain) and can lift the US team, it will effect many kids for a generation or two come.

Obviously the Adu/Carleton "I train when I want" method is a hot mess but look at some of our best players.  Dempsey worked hard but was always kind of an a hole to his team mates.  Donovan always carried with him the need to be in the most comfortable situation close to home as possible else he pouted.   Jozy has at times been accused of being lazy and not getting the most out of what he has been given.  Mathis and Wyndalda seem to thrive on trying to get their coaches to hate them.  Bradley's personality was as plain as day old toast when he was in his prime.

17.22 BST: Some TT reporting from ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle up next. PSV Eindhoven has submitted an improved offer for U.S. youth international and Hannover 96 defender Chris Gloster, a source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN FC. The source stated that the improved bid was made on Friday, and follows a previous offer that was made at the end of June.

Hannover has told Gloster he will be part of the first team this season if he remains, and he was included in the club's first team photo that was posted earlier this week. But the prospect of playing in the UEFA Champions League or Europa League -- if not this season, then in subsequent campaigns -- holds considerable appeal for Gloster. His current contract expires after the upcoming season.

West Ham is the club that bid for Long but the offer was less than $3m.
It looks like Long has a $5m release clause.

I saw some one on twitter suggest if West Ham offers $5m and then immediately loans Long back to NY for the rest of the MLS season it should have multiple benefits.

The most important being that Long will have more chances for caps, easing his ability to get a work permit and the other benefit is that it does not disrupt NY's team at all in the middle of the season.

Sounds like Long really wants to go and this would be a way of making every one happy.

But if West Ham don't see him as $5M player, it might be case closed.

"lots"

we watched two different videos. he looked good, was involved, found his team-mates, went at guys, found useful passes, made smart passes. maybe a hair slower than normal, which is to be expected, and of course some turnovers- which is also to be expected a week into playing wiht a new team in a land far far away. seriously- I would've ever look at that video- especially as his first game for chelsea after flying to japan- and think "crap". ever.
Guess we did watch different videos. I wasn’t discounting for preseason, comparing him to last year in season form. Hope he starts and I think he will be very successful in epl

Josh Sargent was one player who got a head start on domestic preseason preparations after being left off Gregg Berhalter’s U.S. Men’s National Team roster for the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Despite the disappointment of not playing a part for the USMNT this summer, Sargent has made the most of his time with Werder Bremen.

Sunday saw Sargent score in his second-consecutive preseason friendly for Bremen in a 1-0 win over FC Koln. It was a clinical finish from Sargent after never giving up on the play, and fighting his way into the box.

“Definitely not used to playing games like that, but I had to make the most of my opportunity today and I think I did just that,” Sargent said. “I am very happy. It was very physical and hard for us to break through the lines through the game. Luckily we were able to find a goal at the end of the game.”

“Obviously the starting line-up is my goal. I’m happy with how things have been going and with my goal [against Koln]. We’ve been working hard on things in training, and I’m possibly in the form of my life. It’s only been a journey in Germany so far for me. Hopefully it can continue.”

After scoring seven goals in 12 appearances with Bremen II last season, Sargent made his Bundesliga debut and scored 87 seconds after stepping onto the pitch for the first team. He would tally one more goal in nine additional appearances for Bremen, but struggled to find the field in the final months of the season.

The 19-year-old Missouri native is now gearing up for his first full season with Bremen’s first team. Florian Kohfeldt’s side just missed out on European qualification after finishing eighth in the Bundesliga in 2018-19, one point behind Eintracht Frankfurt. Sargent’s strong preseason however is giving Kohfeldt something to be excited about as Bremen are three weeks from their domestic opener, a trip to Atlas Delmenhorst in the German DFB Cup.

Josh is unbelievably clinical when he gets in the opposition box,” Kohfeldt said postmatch. “He’s been working really hard and is in fantastic shape, which is great for him and us, but he’s not without competition in attack.

“In terms of the goal on Sunday, Josh simply did brilliant.”

Following their German Cup opener, Werder Bremen will host Fortuna Dusseldorf in their Bundesliga opener on Aug. 17th. Sargent will line up opposite of fellow American players, goalkeeper Zack Steffen (currently on-loan from Manchester City) and midfielder Alfredo Morales

I have no idea why there weren’t Euro bidders for Parks, but he’s playing really well for NYC now that he’s in the lineup.  A lot of Matic in his game.  I won’t be shocked if he ends up paired with Adams at some point in the near future.  He simply frees up others to do what they do best on offense and can hang with Heber, Treats, and Maxi in helping to create angles/space for their more intricate plays (that Taty ends up blowing).

I've liked everything I've seen of him in europe and for NYC... granted, I haven't seen a ton.

Matic seems an apt comparison- younger, more attacking version. actually- most of what I've seen of him has been as a more two-way guy, getting involved in attack... maybe more than Matic (which I'll admit, might be skewed based on limited viewing) as a more pure holding MF. when I've watched NYC highlights lately, seems like he's in the middle of all of their attacks- and he's got some skills... I'll say Lampard in terms of comparison of styles, although obviously nowhere near as good, but eager to take a guy on and shoot when he's around the box.

eta: and yeah- he was good enough to get some quality minutes for Benefica... was also surprised nothing came of that other than the move to NYC.

you were expecting a guy to spend two days with a new team in preseason, after flying across the planet, and play like he was in midseason form with a team he had played with for 4 years? and regardless- the highlights show a guy with as much involvement in 20+ minutes as most people get in a game... most of which was positive, and yet you called it crap and compared it to caillou coming off a nightmare game. I guess I shouldn't let these kind of goofy hot-takes bother me... not sure why this one does, but it does.

USMNT Watch

#ReadingFC have made an approach to resign Matt Miazga on loan, who is also being tracked by an unnamed Turkish side. The 24-year-old made 18 appearances for Reading since arriving on loan in January

weird- I just saw an Ajax vs Crete team scoreline without him in the 18. must be their 2nd team.... some good names in there.
Do they do things like baseball and have split squad games?  It looks like they have two games on the same day, both against Greek clubs.

The Greek team Dest is playing against is Panathinakios.

I noticed WB did the same thing this weekend when I was trying to find Sargent.

:deadhorse:

I am going to be all sorts of inconsolable if Dest cracks the Ajax starting lineup at our most crucial position of LB and then Behalter does not cap tie him in October which leads to a possible opening for Holland to lure him back.

It makes sense when you think about.  Teams are travelling with ~25 players in the preseason, so to get any sort of decent minutes, it seems logical to schedule a couple of games at the same time when possible.

there's a guy named "boy wonder" or something similar, on Ajax's roster who is listed in both games today.

I didn’t realize their season basically starts next week with their version of the Super Cup and then league play starts the following weekend. He’s going to be involved right from the beginning. If he isn’t cap-tied in October I’m going to assume it’s because he declined. Otherwise It’s time to start looking for a new coach imo.

yeah, it is really exciting (and painful at the same time).

I think last winter I thought I was being too hopeful when I posted that Dest might have a chance to make the first team this summer (maybe as a backup RB)

It is way beyond what I initially hoped for and now I am hoping he can crack 1200 minutes this year (if healthy).  If he is being trusted in two positions (LB and RB) that should open up chances for him.

I don't know the Ajax team well enough to know if some one is hurt that he is getting all these minutes for but as it stands, he looks like he could even be a starter.

I love letting the coach make as many player decisions as possible but I think with dual nats, the decision should be made at a more broad federation level on whether they get capped or not.

If Berhalter decides he does not like Kellyn Acosta, that is fine, since he can't play any where else and can still be recalled by another coach after Berhalter.

But with dual nats who could go to Mexico or other places, I think it is a mistake to allow one person's judgement to effect the ability to cap tie players.

makes sense. the first team seems to be from crete, which is a long way from athens.

isn't freddy macheda (brace here) the man u legend?

I was wrong.  It looks like the games are in different locations in Holland according to wiki (unless they are like right next door)

They’ve got Noussair Mazraoui at RB, he plays for Morocco and isn’t back with the team yet. He had 28 Eredivisie appearances last year so presumably he is in front of Dest on that side.

Nice!  I would have preferred a transfer but this is the next best thing

Understand Miazga to #readingfc is a done deal. Season long loan. Medical passed earlier today

I know it's an impossible pipe-dream (barring a break-out season with Reading and some injuries), but would be extremely fun to see him and CP play together at chelsea.

Yeah it would be incredible but like you said almost impossible.  With the size of the loan army, who knows how deep he is buried on the depth chart.

As a side note have we ever had two US players playing (actually playing) on a Top 20ish type team together?  I can't think of any, probably because we have had barely a few even play for that level of club.

fulhamerica was a top 20 EPL club...

There are some sweeeeet touches in there.  The US can't cap him soon enough.
I can't get over how deep he gets offensively compared to what Berhalter has Ream doing.  Berhalter has to see how much harder it is to play against the US if both wing defenders can get forward.

The only thing he appears to be lacking on the left is a driven left cross.  He crosses appear to be accurate, but of the softer variety.  If he can develop the skill and or confidence to start driving his crosses with his left foot,  he should do very very well in Concacaf.

If he makes the starting squad at Ajax, hopefully it will light a fire under Berhalter to call him even to the Mexico and Uruguay games, even if they can't cap tie him, to show their interest level.

he's sooo comfortable on the ball in tight spaces- almost like CP in that.

wish there'd been more of him defending... but I guess all-touch videos aren't necessarily going to show that. also didn't see much in terms of longer balls forward or switched- everything was tiki-taka. regardless... great to see- and panaetc is a solid team. not playing against scrubs there.
