English Championship is one of most physical leagues in world. Daryl Dike rag-dolling defenders. Hoping Gregg is watching

Gregg isn't watching anything except MLS highlights.

The kids in Philly are really feeling their oats since the U20 tournament

McGlynn to Sullivan with the goal (aided by a deflection). Union are playing great soccer these days. Their kids are starting to take bigger and bigger roles. It’s gradual, but it’s happening. Tough to unseat the starters as it is.

I think Vasquez is a better fit for our team than Jesus is.  Jesus certainly has better foot skills, but thanks to Pulisic, Arronson, Gio, Musah, Weah, Dest, Weston etc we really have enough technical skill on the field.

We need an out and out 9 and Vasquez's big body may fit better with our team than Jesus better skills playing a false 9.

Doyle is going over the top by saying Vasquez may have McBride's hold up play coupled with Wondo's goal scoring touch. but that is the general form factor I think works in a 4-3-3.

Of course I say this with out having any idea what Vasquez will do at the international level.  We at least have a feel for Jesus at this level.  And with so little time between now and the WC, I bet GGG leans more towards the devil he knows.

And if Pefok continues to show the effort he has in preseason, he could very well reenter the picture in a similar manner..

yikes.....sounds like this is only if he chooses surgery...it will be around a month out if he does not choose surgery.   This is his second shoulder separation, which may influence the decision, although I am sure the WC will be weighing heavily on his decision as well.

==================

[Di Marzio] Weston Mckennie could be out for 3-4 months after a dislocation in the shoulder.

Horrible news.  3-4 months would have him back mid-November after a long layoff and no time to get fit.

I bet he elects not to do the surgery to at least give himself a shot at the World Cup, and we're on pins and needles for the two months he's playing when he returns.

Fabs:

Reims are closing on loan deal to sign Folarin Balogun from Arsenal, set to be agreed until June 2023. Balogun has received proposals also from PL clubs but he’s prepared to accept Reims. 🚨🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 #AFC

Medical could take place early next week, waiting for details to be resolved.

Richards got 15 minutes in his first Palace friendly yesterday....

CCV got off to a good start with a high rating for Celtic in a 2-0 league win to kick off the new season in Scotland.

Interesting choice by Jesse yesterday.  Most friendlies are sub fests.  Yesterday he played only 11 guys the whole game, no subs.   The fact that Aaronson and Adams were 2 of the 11 makes it clear they are going to be first choice players, at least in the beginning of the season.

Chris Smith

@CJSmith

As @FabrizioRomano reported this morning, Slonina arrived in London and began his medical. I'm told that was completed without any issues.

And we’re back!

Brenden Aaronson the new overlord of the EPL!!!

Not a great day for Zack Steffen though - pfew!
Saw some guy defending him on Twitter with the old "you guys didn't even mention that he was quality for the rest of the game!" As if keepers have 60 touches a game or something. You just can't play at the international level (or an elite club level) if you're as mistake-prone as Steffen. He's never going to grow out of it.

Maybe..... Maybe not, but he WAS never gonna grow out of it with no playing time. At least now he'll get regular minutes and a chance to regrow comfort on the ball.

FYI, I really missed being able to see people's reactions to the start of the EPL season, particularly wrt the USMNT players in these threads.

Two best stats from the Leeds game
===============
Brenden Aaronson applied pressure to opposing players receiving, carrying or releasing the ball 31 times, more than any other Premier League player after Matchday 1

Only Martin Ødegaard (12.52km) covered more distance in the opening round of Premier League matches than Tyler Adams (12.14km)

lots of good things were said about the Leeds players but we also need to acknowledge that Ream and Jedi played a very strong game against Liverpool. Jedi won an amazing amount of air balls in that game and Ream was as calm and composed as he usually is. I still think GGG did him such a disservice playing him on the outside of a back 3. He is a solid player as one of the 2 CB's. With Miles out and Brooks out to sea (he still has no team), Ream may have a late run at making the 26. We have zero natural LCB's at the moment although CCV and Richards both have experience at that spot.

Was planning to go back and watch the Leeds match on replay but happened to catch the end of the match and Tyler had a pretty big mental lapse when he unnecessarily fouled the Wolves player - it was also a tad dirty and deserved the yellow. No comment on his play as I didn't see it but he can't be doing that crap.

It is so cool that we were here for the flip. Never thought I would see something like this...see the underlined
==================

Liga MX president Mikel Arriola said on Wednesday that he's "worried" about possibly falling behind the level of MLS, particularly when it comes to investment and player development in the Mexican league.

"I am worried," Arriola said about the financial disparities between the two leagues. "The level of investment of MLS increased 600% in 12 years. We [Liga MX] want that kind of investment because if we don't do that, we will lose in the following five years. The main plan of the Mexican league is to increase the level of investment."

"The development of MLS, in terms of competitiveness, has been very impressive," Arriola added.

"They [United States] invest in the youth and they now have 220 players in Europe, we [Mexico] have 35. Another goal of the Leagues Cup next year is to generate a window for our players to [get to] Europe," Arriola said. "We urgently need that in order to be competitive in the World Cup with our national team."

yes, he for some reason lost his mind in that split second. It was a dumb foul to be sure (it was completely off the ball). He did have a strong game overall. NOt quite as good as Aaronson, but a strong game for his first EPL game.

one item went under the radar this weekend and that was Alex Mighten getting his EPL debut for Forrest. His paperwork is already into FIFA and he is just awaiting word. He should have a solid chance to be on the Olympic team.

My immediate reaction was - damn, I really hope this doesn't cost the team a win because that's a really bad first impression. Now, it's almost totally forgotten unless he makes it a habit.

Dike getting hurt is just another gut punch :(
If that doesnt get Vazquez (who scored again Saturday) to camp….

I agree. Vasquez probably was getting invited no matter what but with Pepi starting the season on the bench and Dike getting hurt, and Sargent sadly still on the wing, I think Vasquez has a huge chance to not only get invited but also get some playing time. A good showing in these friendlies would give him a chance to make the 26.

I don't know if GGG will take 3 strikers in the 26. I would put decent money on at least two of Jesus, Pefok, and Vasquez making the roster at this moment in time.

Both Rangers players got time as well

I think Tillman has started both league games and Sands started the most recent one.

We had a first happen this weekend where two American's started in 4 different Euro games (two games in England, one in Scotland and one in Portugal)

Prefok had a nice bike too.

Weahs absence scared me...because he was supposed to take the leap this year. but it was due to suspension, not injury...phew!

Pefok also had a nice header goal this weekend. His start is going as well as we could hope in Germany.

Weah's suspension has bothered many of us because no one that I saw can find the red card. The last red card he received was back in March. Was the suspension for another reason? Do they have yellow card accumulation in France?

It's a shame Ream's header led to the equalizing goal, but from the extended highlights it seamed him and ARob did a pretty good job controlling that side in general.

Only watched short highlights of Chelsea, but it sounds like Sterling played well while Havertz and Mount were off, so maybe some daylight for CP.

With how good Aaronson continues to look, and how good Weah has looked for the US, I'm sort of hoping Tuchel plays around with Pulisic up top again. As we've talked about before in here, if everyone's healthy I think having Aaronson, Weah, Reyna, and CP on is probably going to be more effective than any of those three with an unknown striker. Still not sure GGG would ever do it, though...
