2 nice assists for Musah so far as Valencia are cruising

Ahem, who is saying Gio should get the start over this guy? His game is solid and he keeps adding pieces to it. Gio better get fit and soon if he wants to get any minutes in Qatar. He has a spot on the plane if he's healthy, but if not, who takes his spot? Maybe they give it to Pepi or Sargent or another forward that wasn't going to make the cut. Maybe LDLT gets the spot.

For better or worse, I think Gio will still be a winger for this World Cup.
He's probably also a sub. MMA seems written in pen and how can you keep Aaronson off the field?

What a weird moment. If we make it to the WC missing only Miles there are going to be a couple guys sitting on the bench who'd have been mortal lock starters in any other cycle.

I've fallen into this same trap as well when Gio was out for some time. But then, he came back onto the field for the USMNT and it was an instant reminder as to why we value him so much. This is taking nothing away from Musah, but Gio is a star. We just need him healthy.

I think it's time to talk Joe Scally again. He's started every game this season for Gladbach and has apparently been pretty good. He has already logged 509 minutes.

Last season he got his chance due to injuries. But he played well even if he faded in the 2nd half of the season. That happens at 18 when you log almost 2000 Bundesliga minutes. But new coach and now he has apparently won the right back job outright over Lainer.

So that's two different coaches that have put their faith in Scally for a decent Bundesliga side. He didn't look very good in his USMNT debut but I think you gotta call him for September and you gotta give him minutes. If he continues to look like a fish out of water, well, then you know it's not his time. But it would defy logic to go to Qatar with Yedlin, Cannon, Moore, or Vines over him without giving him another look.

Really just need to find a way to get Pulisic, Gio, Aaronson, Musah, McKennie, and Adams all on the field
Aaronson Pulisic Reyna
McKennie Adams Musah

Pretty much the only way.

Put me in the camp of:

1. If Gio is healthy he has to play
2. I think you are right, that’s basically the only way it can happen which means Weah and Jesus don’t start. I’m perfectly fine with the latter but that’s tough sitting Weah.

Weah has still not played a minute this season. I am not even sure if he is practicing at this point. Finding out details of our injured players in Europe is such a hassle some times.

Speaking of injuries, if Robinson is out* for the friendlies, I think Scally is a lock to get called for the friendlies. If Robinson is healthy, I have no idea what GGG will do...

* Fulham (and Jedi himself) said they hope it is nothing serious but it is too early to tell.

Agree on this.

Not sure why the discussion is Gio vs Musah. As far as talent goes, I'd rank both Musah and Gio as top 5 talents the US has ever produced. Ever. And they were born about 15 days apart. They are both absurdly talented and when available over the next 10-15 years, they are likely both starting somewhere for the US.

But they don't play the same position for Berhalter. Gio has never played as an 8 for the US afaik. He does for Dortmund and it makes sense we'd try him there -- except he's not a fit for what Berhalter wants from his 8s. He's the glam. And the glam in Berhalter's system plays on the wings.

While I could see it happening, I’ll be disappointed if Gio AND Weah both sit just to put Jesus/Pefok/whoever up top. Just play your best XI.

I will say it’s nice having this “problem”. I’m not comparing us to the top teams (yet) but this is something they have to deal with and honestly it’s the first time we would be in a position to not start players as good as Gio and Weah.

Our depth is starting to get there if we can stay healthy and find a couple more defenders.

And another with a monthly "award" -- Johnny with a first XI SofaScore in Brasileirão for August.

He's never really impressed me when I've watched him but he's apparently really picked up his game this year. Those fringe spots for this next window are going to be interesting.

I think the Olympic team may help sort the wheat from the chaff. I think Johnny has a chance to make the Olympic team.

Yeah, Johnny was a huge disappointment during that last Olympic qualifying failure. (I think thats when it wasl. We all expected him to be a pro among kids and he was a non factor.

Hopefully he's improved.

IIRC he seemed both unathletic and slow of thought. I think someone here who watches the Brazilian said it was a little slower than other leagues and maybe that gave him some breathing room he wouldn't have with us?

But agreed. He didn't show much.

Oh this is a tasty story (from Sciaretta). Well worth a quick read.........lets hope Mexico stepped into it again

=============================

This brings up now to Alejandro Zendejas who has blossomed into a very good winger at Club America. Zendejas is a product of FC Dallas and last played for the United States at the 2015 U-17 World Cup where he was on a team that included Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, Luca de la Torre, Brandon Vazquez, and Haji Wright. After that World Cup, he began playing for FC Dallas but in 2016 he was sold to Chivas, which has a policy of only employing players who are eligible and willing to play for Mexico. Zendejas agreed not to play for the United States and play for Mexico while at Chivas.

Since then, Zendejas has played for Mexican youth games (but never in an official competition), but in 2021 he started to play for Mexico’s full national team in friendlies. To date, he has done this twice.

But now it gets interesting. To play for a full national team in friendlies, it requires a one-time switch if the player had played officially for the youth national teams of another country. It was assumed he did so, but it turns out he did not. Not only that, but Zendejas is indicating that he doesn’t want to. This is according to Mexico boss Tata Martino who spoke to the media after a recent 1-0 loss to Paraguay.

"The player needed to sign a document and the player didn't want to sign it," Mexico's coach told TUDN after the defeat. "There is no problem with the federation, no problem with the manager, nothing."

This begs the questions, did Mexico violate the rules for playing Zendejas before he filed a one-time-switch? It’s probably not a major infraction given it was a friendly (it’s not like Paraguay would complain in a friendly it won). But it also raises the question of whether or not Zendejas wants to return to the United States. He still knows a lot of American players from his youth days and he is doing very well right now.

This is getting a little late for Qatar, but possibly next cycle? For now, it is interesting to see how this all comes together and if U.S. Soccer is speaking with Zendejas.

I googled him and this article appeared first: Zendejas receives USMNT call

It looks like this is all a misunderstanding and Tata jacked it up. We reached out but it appears he wants to rep Mexico assuming their Federation doesn't blunder this further. This is likely just an episode of Three's Company.

Are we fearful that with Chelsea signing Auba, that Havertz may cut into what little sub minutes Pulisic has?
Absolutely. Last year, Christian got as much game time as Werner and Ziyech. Essentially the 3 of them were starting/sitting based on form/injury/etc. Mount and Havertz were the favored starters when healthy.

Now Chelsea has brought in two players who'll be the presumed first choices at their positions in Sterling and Auba. That means that the 3rd attacking position in Tuchel's offense will be between Mount and Havertz first, followed by CP and Ziyech. The fact that Ziyech started the last game when they switched to a back 4 means CP is realistically the 6th attacking choice for Tuchel right now. Not a good spot for him to be in. He's only had 130 minutes in the first month of the season despite being healthy through that whole stretch. Sure he'll get more minutes as the schedule tightens, but he's not likely to get enough minutes to play himself into top form.

Bad situation going into the WC for sure.

It starts today. Auba up front and Havertz moved to left wing, Sterling on the right wing. The good news possibly is that it looks like Mount is playing midfield. Probably better for him and possibly a good sign for Pulisic.

Atlanta United’s Miles Robinson arrested, accused of misdemeanor theft

https://twitter.com/DougRobersonAJC/status/1567168563223400448

wtf

"Robinson allegedly took a shot of liquor from a waitress and declined to pay for it."
Yea the article linked was behind a paywall but it sounds like he was out and thought a shot was on the house and some how it escalated to calling the cops over not paying for it. Unless it was some sort of $100+ shot I'd be pretty pissed at my bartender for getting the cops in my bar over a shot.

On for Sterling 75th minute down a goal. Potential for a huge moment for CP here.

I’ve watched the last 50 minutes of game action and my brain still keeps telling me Chelsea is in blue.

This is REALLY important. If Gio can go 70 minutes tonight, and having provided 2 very nice assists, it is going to give the coach some confidence that he is healthy to play more in the future.
