US Men's National Team (13 Viewers)

Notable omissions:

Yedlin, McKenzie, Cowell.

Also noteworthy that Tessmann didn't get called back either (not surprising).

ETA -- No Pefok over last 2 cycles either.

Some notes from Sciaretta on Maloney

===================

ASN has spoken with Lennard Maloney twice. The first was ahead of his first U.S. U-20 camp in 2018 (he played in two U-20 camps that fall and those have been his only U.S. call-ups at any age level until now). The second interview was this past July ahead of his first Bundesliga season with FC Heidenheim. He said that in the last game of the 2022/23 season when Heidenheim was promoted in a dramatic win. Maloney was forced out of the game early in the second after a collision knocked him unconscious. But he was able to sit on the bench and watch his team prevail.

He said that when he realized his team was being promoted, his first thoughts were on being in a better position to make the U.S. national team.

“Everybody says it and I mean it too - it's an honor to play for your country,” Maloney said. “When we won that last game, it was one of my first thoughts, too. The World Cup is coming up soon. What better way could there be than playing in your own country in front of your family and friends? It is also a goal that I have to play for the United States. I'd be more than honored to get that call and step into the plane, fly over. But in the end, the coach decides. If he needs me, I'll be there. Otherwise, I'll just keep watching all the games.”

Last season with Heidenheim, Maloney switched positions from central defense to defensive midfield. He said he enjoyed the switch when it was implemented by Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt.

“He came to me, ahead of the Hannover game where one of our midfielders got injured during the week and he said we want to try something,” Maloney explained. “That game was pretty good. From there, every minute I got more in midfield was making me better. I've learned a lot - like getting more comfortable with the ball and seeing more space and passing and where you have to pass and stuff like that. But I think putting me in midfield was a good thing.”

What can American fans expect from Maloney?

For one, he covers a lot of ground but is not particularly fast. He probably won’t be able to play as a lone No. 6. He is very defensive in nature and is an excellent shield in front of the backline. He works extremely hard in his dual winning, aerials, and in the physical side of the game.

He is regarded as an excellent teammate and an easy player to get along with.

Jedi is the big omission for me. I assume he picked up a knock recently?
Yeah, I didn't even notice that. Interesting.

Btw, here's some more names that one would think could be called up at any point:

--Tyler Adams obviously because of injury
-- Sargent
-- Haji
-- Vazquez
-- Jesus
-- Zimmerman
-- EPB

also a 3rd keeper is going to be needed eventually. Only two on the roster and one of them does not play at club level. :sadbanana:

Jedi missed a few games in September. Maybe Fullham requested he not get called and get some rest.

He has to be one of the nailed-on starters when healthy. I don't mind letting him get some rest if that was the request. Guess we'll know soon.

Gregg Berhalter on Gio Reyna: "The conversation was a positive. I was appreciative of him taking the time to connect. For us, it was about aligning, and we did that."- "It was a zoom conversation."- He doesn't know how many minutes he can give him due to fitness these games

I don't want to derail this thread into politics. But if you wanted to get an idea of Alexi Lalas' political leanings, he posted something on X (Twitter) which removes all doubts.

A pic of him at the Heritage Foundation.

Sounds like Maloney must be a high activity/energy player. I just saw a stat that he is the number 1 ranked player across the entire Bundesliga for distance covered per match.

He was also named to the Bundesliga team of the week by Kicker this week.

Gio getting called must be an olive branch type of thing because there is no way anyone can evaluate him right now. I guess getting him in camp will help to see where he is
if brendan's getting called, you might as well call Gio... based on evaluating players on their club play

The biggest thing Aaronson has going for him is that he plays fairly decently when with the US. If his US performances start to match his club play, his time with the US could be coming to an end. It would not shock me if Paredes leap frogs him by next summer if Aaronson continues to struggle at club level.

I haven't seen his defensive work, but I think they're playing similar positions, so I'd think Tillman does...

Gregg already talking about Maloney's "team mentality." I guess if you can get Roldan/Arriola type guy in at literally the shallowest position in the pool, you do that. Even if Adams gets healthy and starts everything again, it's good to have another culture guy. I'm seeing a lot of people mention that Maloney isn't "fast" but a lot of good DM's aren't that fast. You don't have to cover every inch. You have to read the game.

GGG needs to find out Tillman's best position. In some ways he is the exact opposite of Musah in that his best work comes in the final 3rd but he lacks else where on the field. He does not appear to be a natural winger either so I am unsure where he best fits for the US.

In games where the US is expected to be on the front foot, he could function well at the 8.

Maloney also has plenty of CB experience which can't hurt his overall case.

I hope he will get some decent minutes over these two games, so that we can get some sort of read against quality opponents. His minutes will probably depend on whether GGG wants to start Weston/Musah/Luca at the 6.

It's kind of weird how quick the US went from not really having a true international caliber 9 or 10 to being possibly two deep at each position. I think Tillman is a 10. And I think Gio really is too. "Modern" 10's which means they do plenty of the box to box stuff as well. But both are primarily chance creators (Tillman is a bit more of a finisher as well).

Hard to create chances as a 10 and even more so as an 8 with constant hammy issues. I get that we can't NOT call him in but at who's detriment? The situation dictates GGG has to call him in, or at least offer, but who are we leaving off that needs the minutes?

I don't know. A striker? But Sargent is injured. If we have room for Aaronson as a wing on this roster, I'm fine with Gio coming in. Even if it's just to get used to being in a room with Gregg without wanting to strangle him.

Here is the German roster for Naggelsmann's first games in charge. They play US and Mexico this window.

So much talent but they have been under performing. If the players want to impress new coach, this could be a very tough game for the US.

========
Goalkeepers: Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim), Bernd Leno, (Fulham), Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona), Kevin Trapp (Eintracht Frankfurt)

Defenders: Robin Gosens (Union Berlin), Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund), David Raum (RB Leipzig), Antonio Rudiger (Real Madrid), Niklas Sule (Borussia Dortmund), Jonathan Tah (Bayer Leverkusen), Malick Thiaw (AC Milan)

Midfielders: Robert Andrich (Bayer Leverkusen), Julian Brandt (Borussia Dortmund), Chris Fuhrich (VfB Stuttgart), Leon Goretzka (Bayern Munich), Pascal Gross (Brighton & Hove Albion), Ilkay Gundogan (Barcelona), Jonas Hofmann (Bayer Leverkusen), Joshua Kimmich (Bayern Munich), Jamal Musiala (Bayern Munich), Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)

Forwards: Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich), Kevin Behrens (Union Berlin), Niclas Fullkrug (Borussia Dortmund), Kai Havertz (Arsenal), Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

So not 100% certain on surgery for Adams but this does not sound in any way good :(

IRAOLA GIVES ADAMS INJURY UPDATE

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola says TYLER ADAMS' setback with a hamstring injury is severe & "surgery is not out of the question". Club "don't expect him soon on the pitch".

"I think the medical staff are analysing the situation. They are asking different specialists to take the best route we have," Iraola said Friday, per @TheAthleticFC.

"We still haven't decided. But whatever the solution he takes or we take, we don't expect him soon on the pitch. It's the same hamstring. He's not feeling well. He played some minutes because he wanted to give it a try, but he didn’t have good sensations. Now, we stop because something is not going well. Because you've done all the previous things, so you should be ready to perform now & things are not going well. We have to think of another solution yet. I think even surgery is not out of the question. "

Unfortunate news for Adams, the winless Cherries & the USMNT.

The Adams news is troubling and sucks but he has plenty of time to recover from this. Hopefully they make the right call and get him full healthy, even if he misses a long stretch to recover.

Gios healthy enough to dress for Dortmund... he's healthy. This is about getting a key US player some minutes, and patching up a broken relationship to move forward. He's not taking anybodys spot and HE needs the minutes
Exactly. Discussion questioning why we'd want him called into this camp is so weird to me. He's one of our very best players, he's been sitting on the bench for his club team, and his relationship with our coach needs patching up...this is the #1 guy I want in camp and getting some minutes for us. I don't care whose minutes he takes - everyone else remotely close to his quality is getting plenty of playing time with their club and doesn't really need to see the field*.

*I'm willing to accept Weah as a counter-argument.

I think GGG needs to prioritize - my personal list of the things I think he need to prioritize:
  • Integrating Balogun
  • Finding a backup GK, 6 and 9
  • Keeping Gio engaged and getting minutes - it’s not that long ago many of us were saying he’s maybe our most talented player.
  • Keeping CP healthy
  • Unleashing the attack with whatever formation he settles on (seems settled)
Gio is too talented to ignore/leave at home.

The Booth brothers play each other today in the Netherlands. Both listed as subs. This is Taylors first time dressing after returning from injury.

I agree on back up keeper and 6 but I am unsure about the 9.

Pepi and Balogun give us two players already better than anything we had last cycle and both are young and healthy. Finding a 3rd would be a luxury given our luck at this position in recent times but Sargent was off to his best start ever as a pro this year before the injury.

I think finding a back up to Jedi is also high on the list.

I guess I more meant settling on Pepi (or whoever as the backup) - I would agree Pepi has done enough to earn it and would be ok with that.

Joe Scally with a BOMB

Just a reserve USMNT right back right doing bits.
oh that is nice! He has been having a hard time cracking the starting lineup this year. I hope this helps.
Scally has started 5 of 7 Bundesliga games. The two he hasn't started were the last two (including today). However he came off the bench in both games he didn't start. There is definitely concern that he hasn't played well but it's not like he's not getting minutes.

His hand signals tell me he's under scrutiny/criticism... At least from the fans/media.

So... sadly, I've moved on from Adams playing for the US.

I mean, it would be great if he can get and stay healthy someday, but the rinse repeat pattern is telling me it ain't happening. Time to get used to the new, not backup, 6... Whether it's Musah, Johnny, LDLT or whoever
