US Men's National Team (13 Viewers)

Coaching can sort of be explained away as the Nats don't get a lot of time together. The bigger issue is these kids like harriel think everyone is the same level and they'll get bailed out. World class competition will expose you.

My question would be, all nations face the same training time constraints. Why do we always seem lost when it's not our A1 team?

Ok... Ive said I'm not a results guy. This situation, I still want to see what individuals can do.

But damn. I figured at least competitive something, not getting laughed off the field

The terrible fullback play and the Turner howler were one thing, but I have no idea what defensive shape they're trying to present. They're not getting pressure on the ball, and they're still playing a high line against pacey forwards and with one of the best long ball passers in the world in Xhaka having enough time to crochet a cap before hitting a ball. That can't be what Poch is coaching. I just don't get it.

They don't know either. At some point I watched them pressing higher up... 3 guys buzzing around 1 swiss guy- who didn't even have the ball. I honestly couldn't figure out what the plan was.

We have to find outside backs. Zimmerman expecting folks to do their job....and the ones today just can't.
Still not sure why scally and reynolds aren’t on this roster and playing today
I get the whole "play the youngsters in a friendly" thing, i really do. But they look completely lost. Like not even close. Is that all we have to throw out there? I'm not a scallops fan either but at least he might follow a runner.

Zimm is old. Experienced for sure but he can't cover for this.

I'm not sure how other nations train and in the same amount of train time look eons beyond what we just saw.

England played it's youngsters today and lost 3-1 to Senegal. Sometimes you just need to blood them...

Based on how good we THINK we are, maybe so. Perhaps it's a strategic wake up call...

I know we aren't 2007 Spain, but the pace (or lack thereof) of the ball movement is just so lazy.

Down 4-0 and it looks like they're holding up the ball to play damage control

Feel like that's described the last two years.

I was just thinking the exact same thing. No urgency, other than passing the ball back. And then back again.
Same.
What do you have to lose.
Push forward and at least try to Make something happen.
Uninspiring for sure.

No creativity, no real taking chances, no offensive threats, and just plain boring.

Just Outclassed?

Missed the game working, just watched the highlights. If our backups are going to dominate like this ours fancy Euros can stay in Euro. Gonna need to schedule some better competition than the Swiss. Switzerland looked awfully slow and disorganized to be ranked 20th. Poch has to feel good about getting a result.

The 2nd half 0-0 tie?

Thought we scored 4. Weren't we in the home whites?

Maybe you should have mixed in an occasional bass with your brews.

I search youtube for highlights about 30 minutes after the game....nada except a Spanish broadcast. Soccer is destined to fall behind Banana Ball in this country.

Soccer had its moment in the sun. Now the US has moved on from that forgotten, ancient sport.

I couldn't figure out the schtick/sarcasm on this one

While the 4th goal was a golazo, it was still really disappointing to see how little Makenzie did to get even the tiniest but if pressure on the shooter.

Did the US put a shot on goal? I don't recall the GK needing to make a save.

Speaking of ..I hope the inks dry on Turners new contract.

Speaking of again... Did Johnny to AM finalize? Or did they give him back already?

Our starting FB’s were so out of their depth in this game. While Scally is very limited offensively, he is at least a very competent top 5 league defender. I still don’t know why he wasn’t here.

Johnny continues to confound me. I am trying so hard to see what he does of use and I see nothing. He does not tackle hard, he does not win loose balls, he can’t play a quick pass for the life of him, he almost never breaks a line with a pass or even tries a long ball over the top. He looks so utterly average.

I will continue to say the Steffen injury was the worst thing that happened this summer. Turner can’t be a starting internatoinal keeper with almost 0 minutes at club.

=======

So putting that disaster behind us for a second, what do we have left for the Gold Cup?

Based on the first two games, I would start this against T&T

………………………..**** Me

Freeman…….X………….Richards………..Tolkin

……………………Adams…….LDLT

McGlynn……………….Tillman……………..Luna

………………………….Big Pat

the most frustrating part for me was how different everything looked from the Turkey game. Nothing dynamic, no energy, no organization. I know Poch made 9 changes in the lineup and obviously the mix was horrendous but this line up looked like they had completely different coaching and instructions from the previous game.

The gap between Dest/Jedi and every other FB is arguably the biggest gap in any position between starter and sub on the US team. Jedi and Dest have to get healthy. There is just no other option that is going to be ready by next summer.

Full on starting 11... we are top 15 in the world.

2 injuries and we are 50 or lower
IMO, the full team is in the 25-30 range or so (but note that the 15-30 is REALLY clogged with similar level of teams).

However I don't think it is fair to say the US is missing just two players.

Pulisic, Weston, Jedi, Dest, Weah, Steffen, Balogun, Pepi, Tessman, Scally, Musah, Sargent and hell even Gio with all his problems, all would have significantly improved both the starting lineup and the depth. Then throw in that the two best players on the current roster, Adams and Richards, did not even play yesterday and we are missing a TON of players.

I am fine with Poch taking some of the blame here but I think it is dangerous to think the second half suddenly fixed the problems when it seemed clear Switzerland naturally took their foot off the gas. For all the talk of matching them in the second half, the US still did not produce a single shot on goal

========================

Mauricio Pochettino:"After a performance like that, it’s difficult to say after 90 minutes that this guy is in or out. We can’t blame the players for that first half. My responsibility is to build the team. It’s my responsibility. It’s not to blame the players. But I think it’s important for young players who have made a debut to see that it’s a high level. You have to give more. With more experienced players in the second half, we matched the opponent. For the Gold Cup, we’ll learn from that and make better decisions in the future."

Lol... I knew he started, but until he just drew that lazy yellow in the 93rd minute- had zero idea Johnny was on the field
I think he was meant to be in the Tyler Adams role. LOL. Maybe we just hire the manager of Real Betis because that guy is truly a genius to get the best out of Johnny.
As an Aleti fan, I am not feeling very good about this transfer...
