US Men's National Team (11 Viewers)

Curacao tied Canada 1-1.

I'll be honest- I know nothing about Curacao, and I haven't checked to see who's missing from CAN (obviously Davies is)... But seems a surprising result.

What about that Cremaschi kid? Would be nice to cap tie him, no?
Also Club World Cup with Inter Miami. Not really a wing either.

I also don't think it makes sense to take someone who hasn't been in a lot of camps as a replacement for the knockouts. And I get that nobody has a ton of experience with Poch's camps, but you need someone who doesn't need to get up to speed unless you just want a last 10 minutes energy guy. If that's what they want, maybe Griffin Yow, who is playing well in Belgium.

But this really would be a terrific save face opportunity for both Poch and Christian if they are open to it. Christian wouldn't be committing to nine games. Four games tops. He'd get to demonstrate his commitment. Poch would get to say all the nice things about how important CP is to the program. Every body eats the appropriate amount of **** and we move on.

Haji has left the team to return to England for treatment for his Achilles heel issue.

The US can replace him after the group stage if they want to.

I would HOPE they bring in an actual true wing. But at this point, who the heck knows what Poch is thinking.
Really highlights our lack of depth at wing. Other than Pulisic, who can we add? Eighteen months ago I thought we’d be in great shape with paredes and booth, but both have had their careers stall due to injury. Do morris or arreola still play?

He hasn't been good for the US but zendejas had a great club season.

Feel like he's worthy of one more chance given the situation.

A year ago I would have said Taylor booth but he obviously stagnated in a major way (wasn't he also injured?)

Did juve advance or can they add Timmy? Gios not sniffing the field so far for dortmund

Knockout stages of CWC and Gold Cup start at the same time so it's technically possible to call someone that is in the CWC but all of them have one more match after today before knockouts and it's unclear who will be available. My assumption is we would want to lock that in now and have them at practice tomorrow.

Unavailable due to CWC
Weah
Musah (that's where Poch has played him)
Reyna
Campbell
Cremaschi
Morris
Arriola

Realistic Options
Pulisic
Yow
Zendejas
Wiley
Paredes
Cowell
Gutierrez (my guess)

Wild card
Dest

They are playing now. They have another game after today but they are almost certain to advance. Another factor here is I think we left the CWC participants off the 60-man roster so we can't call them even if they get bounced.

Musah is not in the CWC FWIW.

He was called up by Poch but turned down the call up due to personal reasons.

Yeah - I think you're right Gutierrez makes sense (and is the most likely). Zendejas would also make sense. Wiley isn't a wing. Is Yow?

Wiley's definitely played a lot in the past as a wing for ATL and the USYNT and that seemed to be his position for his loan at Strasbourg (though that was cut short). He played exclusively LB for Watford the 2nd half of this season and that's likely his best position long-term.

He hasn't been in camp with Poch yet though so it's hard to know what position he's seen as. Poch does seem to prefer inverted wingers and overlapping fullbacks. I'm not sure that Wiley has ever played as a right wing, so you're right to point out the fit's probably not right.

Thoughts....

Haiti had been playing decent football coming in to the tourney, so they weren't the same cupcake we'd normally have seen, but still it was a pretty poor game overall for the US.

Freese.... recovered well from his early mistake and made some decent saves, but I don't envision him being a difference maker against quality teams. Another good shot stopper who looks terrified with every back pass IMO. Remember when Nick Rimando was the best GKer in MLS and couldn't sniff the US squad? Those were the days...

Richards/Ream/Tolkin/Freeman: Did their job decently enough without standing out IMO. Tolkin's sweet pass to Ag was nice though.

TIllman: Again the only real threat on this team. He's a starter in the A team in my book right now.

Ag: Great effort, good goal. Still too raw and lacks touch. Can't see a huge difference between him, Pefok, Vasquez, and Dike. They're all basically the same person.

Sullivan: Had moments, tried some fun stuff. Need to see more before I make a solid determination. He was better than Aaronson.

Aaronson: Same things we've always seen from him.

Adams: Still our best DM and it's not close.

De La Torre: Looked competent, but seemed to lack that certain "try ****" attitude that we need in that spot IMO.

Subs: Nothing stood out IMO other than Johnny having another near miss disaster pass.

Overall, we lacked passion.... at least in the first half. Thought we improved a lot after the break. Still can't see a true identity for this squad. I also don't feel like anyone on this squad scares defenses.

Of my laundry list of items I wanted from this summer, it looks like I am only going to get one of them and that was for Tillman to look as good against Concacaf opponents as he does at club level.

He is never going to replace what we hoped Gio was going to be but at least it is something positive. His class should look even better when Dest, Jedi, Pulisic, Weah and Weston are on the team.

I didn't watch the game, but glad to hear that Tillman keeps showing class.

If Puli and Weah are on the wings, with Balo/Pepi up top, how do Wes, Adam's and Tillman for together in the midfield? Can Tillman play all the way to the sideline (hopefully left) especially on defense? Adams will stay back obviously and we know Wes can be a excellent box to box midfielder and play on the sideline too. Just not sure about what spaces Puli, Jedi, and Tillman will operate in on the left.

Poch sees him as very versatile. One thing that I have loved is Tillman is willing to engage defensively. He made some wonderful tackles tonight that helped spring counter attacks

"Malik, it's difficult to define him because what a player, no?" Poch said. "What a player that is showing this, all his talent and capacity. Because this type of player, the talent that he has shown with every single game and then with the capacity without ball, the work ethic in the way that he really is aggressive, he recovered a lot of balls. He's always trying to help the deep press, chasing back, playing in different positions.

"He can appear like a No. 10 in training, between the lines, using the half space, but can be in the right or left side, wide. Or he can drop and play like a No. 8, No. 6. I think, 'What a talented player.' So pleased with him."

As for how the midfield fits together, I think we are going to have to play a dual holding midfielders when the WC comes and the competition goes way up.

I think Adams and Weston could work well together in a dual DM role and let Malik play in a hybrid 10/8 role.

Mexico and CR drew 0-0 tonight.

So we get Costa Rica in the quarter finals. That is going to be a step up in quality opponent for the US compared to the group stage.

This team still needs to have more of a killer instinct in driving the ball forward. Feels like someone gets with 5 yards of a player and they pass it all the way back to the goalie.

They need to be more focused on generating pressure. Thought Aaronson did a great job of that.

this came out of no where.

Tim Weah is one of the two players (alongside Samuel Mbangula) that Nottingham Forest are in talks to sign from Juventus. Contacts in progress as the parties are negotiating for a transfer of €22-23M for both players.
ESPN is reporting that Juventus and Forest have agreed. Forrest is now working with the two players to agree to contracts.

Noahkai Banks signed an extension with Augsburg through 2029. So it seems like he's staying there a while. And he had a few thoughts about the USMNT.
On my "hope for" list this summer was for Poch to find any one else besides Ream he felt comfortable with next to Richards. It appears that is yet another in a long list of hopes that seems to be lost this summer.

Banks is a long shot at best to be ready by the WC but all it takes is one injury at Augsburg and he could get his chance.

It is also kind of refreshing to hear a dual nat not talking about "keeping all the doors open". Even if the Germany door is incredibly unlikely it is nice to hear him only talk about the USMNT as his future.
