48 teams (12 groups of 4) which cuts down to knock-outs with 32 teams- only 16 are eliminated from group play.

and tbf- I thought Cavan looked fine in the opening game, but nothing particularly worked for him... other than the game-winning goal (via a nicely hit Albert cross and being completely unmarked into the box). I don't begrudge the gw goal from getting him MOTM status there, even if I thought Albert was the clear best player on the field.

yes the format is the same for the 2026 WC, at least in terms of a 32 team first knockout round.

I don't know yet if the seeding will be identical for how they match up the 32 teams but I assume it will be very similar if not identical.

One nice thing I saw from the full game I watched and the extended highlights of the other games was that any time the two players (Sullivan and Mathis) were any where near each other, they combined extremely well. I don't know how much there is to the rumors that they don't get along off the pitch but as long as they play well together I don't really care.

These two players stand out like no other two US players at this age group since Donovan and DMB and both Cavan and Mathis are younger than Donovan and DMB were when they played in the U17 WC.

OK, I am a little confused at what I am looking at here. The game is described as the US U17's vs England U17's but it is not related to this current WC. Maybe it is the next group since the U17's will be having a WC every year going forward?

Massive result last night in Concacaf. Haiti, who has been banned from having any home games, beat Costa Rica last night 1-0.

The shock defeat leaves Costa Rica in the almost unimaginable position of not even making the intercontinental playoffs, much less being one of the initial 6 Concacaf teams.

Costa Rica are in 3rd and have to win their final game against Honduras and then hope for help.

Considering our youth teams look- at eye-level- equivalent to the top teams... it would be nice to get a win at one of those levels one day. Mex can underperform and lose to the US and then win youth tournaments.

I guess Im surprised at how dissapointed i was with the u17 and u20 results..

So Poch just said something interesting. He is not going to do what previous US coaches have done and invite 30 plus players to the final camp next spring and make cuts. He intends to only call the exact roster he wants and then if some one gets hurt, instead of making cuts, he will simply add someone from the 55 man provisional roster.

More than half of the expected starters are missing from this camp so any lineup was always going to look strange.

Had Weah, Pulisic, Weston, Jedi, Adams, Tillman and Richards all been in camp, the lineup would likely look more normal.

You have to ask the half dozen club coaches who have refused to play him. He does tend to get injuries often, but he also finds it hard to get on the field at club level. Even when he sometimes seems kind of productive on a minute by minute basis. I've never heard a coach come flat out and say it, but after a certain amount of time, you have to assume he has problems training like a professional. But he knows that he doesn't have a lot of chances yet. He's behind at least Pulisic and Malik Tillman in those spots behind the striker. Maybe behind McKennie and Zendejas too. So he's going to need to put his nose down and work.

He's at a club with his best friend now. He's married. They're not good enough at Gladbach to let him only be a flair player, so it's just up to him to show he can put in the work.

I'm not at all convinced Jedi gets his spot back even if he gets healthy. Arfsten is very, very good at giving himself that little bit of space to get a cross off. He is not nearly the defender than Jedi is at his best, but he's not exposed that much in this system.
