Vegas (3 Viewers)

Loved the location for treasure island. I think what I liked the most about it was ease of access for the car. I despise having to drive on the strip and I hate when you have to drive up and around 7 floors to get a spot. Treasure island isn't really a target destination for people to drive to and park at so there was always parking easily available on floor three which was really the main floor and first one you enter on. It was really easy to get in and out of to head around town too, no drunk pedestrians to deal with.

Heading out again March 20th. I have never been there during NCAA tourney. Is it as crazy as I have heard? What time in the AM will they open the betting windows?
I also enjoyed Treasure Island when I stayed there in January. Room was nice and clean. Casino was fine. Location is the best thing about it as you can gamble at the Venetian, Palazzo and Wynn without paying the higher room rates.
This is what i enjoyed about it. Sleep at an inexpensive place, use the facilities nearby for whatever else you wanted to.

Having said that I did all my gambling at TI because their blackjack was a $5 table that had 3/2 BJ.. that's rare for the strip
I'd rather stay at a little nicer place and go for the cheaper gambling spots. Not to say anything is wrong with TI... But if you've got the budget for gambling at Venetian, Palazzo, or Wynn (basically $25+ craps or blackjack) then what's an extra $150/night for a nicer room?
Because it's the snowball effect.. it's not just the nicer room, then the restaurants are more expensive, the massages are more expensive, the comps are worse, etc.

If it makes you feel any better I sprung for the suite at TI.

This is where I'm at... if you're talking about $100-150/night on a trip where I'm spending $500-1000/day... I'd rather sleep/shower/unwind and enjoy the common area benefits (pool/dining/lobby/etc) of a nicer place... then go gamble on the cheap elsewhere.

I'm posting this here now because I'm waiting for the final go ahead from mrs ref before I make a Independent thread...

There are about 5 different dudes that I know of on here that will be in Vegas for the colossus WSOP event at the end of May. I'm going to organize a cornhole if I end up going (80% yes).

If my on-site dining options are Kahunaville and Senior Frogs, I'm out. I don't travel to Vegas to eat at a slightly jazzed up Chilis. :X

if it makes you feel any better, i didn't dine at kahunaville or Senior Frogs, but I did use their breakfast buffet and one of their vendors for a quick piece of pizza at lunch.. but my dinners were at nice plazes at Caesars or Encore

Don't get me started. 6/5 BJ is an abomination and should be boycotted by everyone. They already run out 6+ decks with only 70% penetration as it is. They'll never return to 3/2 unless the sheeple stop playing it. Some places tout it almost like it's better than 3/2 and the morons buy it.

Yes, it's nuts. Be sure to go walk the strip around 11 pm. It's quite a sight to see.

Leaving in two days. Three of the guys I'm meeting get in about 4 hours earlier.

I fully expect them to be a disaster when I arrive.

It's been my experience that things escalate pretty quickly in Vegas.

I had a group of buddies who went and collectively agreed to leave their smart phones behind. They all got those cheapy pre-paid phones with no camera on them for the trip so they could communicate with each other, their wives/girlfrieds could reach them, etc. They wanted no risk of evidence. I always thought that was a really good idea.

in my 20's I did a lot of stupid stuff in Vegas and fortunately it was in the days before camera phones were in every hand.... but this seems really excessive, no?

Good God why exactly are you guys intending to do that you simply can't risk everybody agreeing to photograph or record anything?

You obviously haven't been paying attention to social media for the last 5 years or so. All it takes is one slip-up that in real time wasn't that big a deal to really mess-up someone's life.

Seems mandalay bay is the only casino that serves halfway decent beer on the casino floor. Saw they have fat tire, sophie, lagunitas, brooklyn brown, and a couple others.

Any other suggestions for decent beers while gambling?

Drink bourbon. You're a grown up now.

I like bourbon but for free drinks while gambling, full strength beers are often the best choice over watered down cocktails

Are people really tweeting and Facebook ing that much to cause a problem? If so the burner phones are still a problem, group texts are danger as well.

Unless your group intends to participate in infidelity what other types of posts will cause a problem

I guess I should clarify... Any other suggestions for gambling floors that actually serve beers outside the regular bud/miller/coors/heineken choices?

Since I am a grown up I have made the choice that I enjoy drinking beer. I dislike the taste of liquor and I have no desire to force myself to like it. More bourbon for you, and since you don't drink beer, there is more beer for me. :slaphands:

Actually, I was just being a doosh after having a few bourbons last night. Corona is my go-to beer in vegas.

Order your bourbon neat. They can't water it down.

Havent had much issue with Bourbon on rocks being watered down in casinos but mixed drinks definitely are. I should not be able to drink 24 Jack & Cokes and still be able to form complete sentences  I'm a ##### though and prefer my bourbon chilled. :)

I'll usually order a double when I order neat or rocks. Sometimes they'll do it, other times they won't. But you usually end up with a decent pour.

Craps is nearly never 25. 15 is the highest you ever really see it. I've only once been in a hotel where 25 was the cheapest table and that was the Wynn and at like 11pm on a Saturday. And by midnight they dropped it to 15.

Blackjack is basically banned on the strip. At nearly any price below 100. It is extremely rare to see a $15 3/2 table anywhere. It's all tricked up bonus stuff and or single deck 6/5 where they shuffle after every deal. I've stopped looking for it, but knowing they have some at TI is nice.

If you just are looking for a time kill then paigow is still a decent way to milk some free drinks at roughly the same odds as BJ.

I love Pai Gow Poker to kill time, clear my head, tread water, and drink while losing almost nothing.

For those who like Blackjack in Vegas, fairly comprehensive list of games offered sorted by casino, number of decks, minimum, etc.

Agreed that $10-15 craps is pretty standard everywhere.... with red chip and green chip tables being the outliers.

The Wizard does a fantastic job crunching odds and giving "proper" play advice as Wizard of Odds. Can't recommend his site enough to people who will play any table games.

I do miss O'Shea's -- $3 craps in the heart of the Strip 24/7. Good BJ too. Once HET gobbled them up, that was never gonna last.

It is good for that. However there are so many pushes that Pai Gow is about as exciting as watching paint dry.

I usually get bored, then start throwing my money away on those stupid Fortune Bonus bets. Anything to spice it up a little.

You can play $5 craps at NY/NY during the week in the morning through early afternoon...same with Planet Hollywood. It's basically the only game we play when we go to Vegas. At night we will play $10 craps at where ever we decide to go. Typically we play at Planet Hollywood (awesome casino BTW), MGM, NY/NY or Caesars. Sometimes we get to Mandalay Bay as well. If we decide on blackjack it is also during the week in the day at NY/NY where they have $5 blackjack.

BTW: I was a Tennessee ATO pledge for a few weeks back in mid 90's. Small world.

Boring. As. Crap. No doubt. It's great for just hanging out BS'ing w/ the boys watching a game or just to collect your thoughts, but those folks who play it religiously are nuts in my book.

Picking this up again:

Need the best hotel money can buy for a romantic getaway with the wife, a really nice pool, and something of a scene About halfway between old geezers at the slots and a bunch of drunk twenty two year olds flexing in the pool.

Whatcha got?

We are looking at the Venetian, encore Wynn, and mandarin.

Also I'll take diet advice. I need to lose 20lbs before July or I'll end up being the fat guy there with the smokeshow wife in her bikini and everyone wondering what the hell she's doing with me. TIa

Never stayed @ MO but I've hearf it's pretty awesome. Great, great bar at the top -- can't recall the name right now, but I've been there a few times. No casino if that matters to you.

I'm a fan of the Wynn. Crazy expensive, but it's much better than the Venetian if you're looking to wow the missus IMO. Steve does a nice job of making guests feel good about spending all their money.

On the diet front, I've always had good results going the "Sugar Busters" route. My GP pointed me to it years ago. Said it's corny but the science behind it is solid. Basically a watered-down version of Atkins. Do away with processed sugars and simple carbohydrates, eat lots of fiber-rich foods. Works for me since pasta, bread, and potatoes are on my list of favorite foods.

Depending on how important the pool "scene" is to you, I'll throw in Trump as well. It's more built around being a romantic trip...no casino on site, so it's much quieter. It's also 5 star accommodations, pool, and spa, but there isn't a lot of action. Access to the strip through the Fashion Show Mall.

These are solid choices. For more modern accommodations, Cosmopolitan and Delano are also good choices. Cosmopolitan has some amazing views of the fountains and is in the middle of City Center (but not quite as big and loud as Aria). Delano is at the south end of the strip so it's a little quieter than City Center (I personally prefer that), has a great spa and still some great restaurants on site.

Totally disagree on the Wynn. I don't think it touches the Venetian. I've stayed at both and the Venetian is head and shoulders above, IMO.

Stayed there once about 3 years ago for a conference my wife had. I just wasn't that impressed. Maybe just had a bad trip and/or were in the wrong tower.

The worst room at the Venetian is 700 sq ft with a sunk in living room. Their standard room blows away the standard Wynn room. I was at the Wynn last year and was not impressed. But hey, it's obvious that lots of people like it.

I've stayed at The Venetian, The Wynn when it was brand new, Aria when it just opened and a bunch of lower tier places.

It really does depend on what you want to do. I enjoyed staying at all 3.

I most impressed with the "overall" feel of the Venetian. We also had open bar and concierge service in the part we stayed.

The pool was not anything special but was relaxing - which is what we wanted.

We also visit most of the casinos when we go and not just stay at one place.

*This is based off of visits of up to 10 years ago....

Our room wasn't 700 sq ft. It felt a tad bigger than the standard room at the Wynn, which I think is in the 600 sq ft range.

Regardless, from my perspective once the room reaches a certain level in Vegas they're all about the same. I didn't have an issue w/ the room at the Venetian. My "meh" came from staffing and common areas. The staff seemed really thin to me and I didn't care much for the casino for some reason. We aren't pool folks so I can't speak with much authority about that. The vibe and feel of the Wynn common areas is more my speed. And the service there blew the service I got at the Venetian out of the water.

Hey, each unto his own. My default casino was whomever is willing to let me stay for free, so I'm hardly the paragon of sophistication. Then my wife stayed at the Wynn on business once about a decade ago and ruined cheap Vegas for me forevermore.

If not having a casino is not a deal-breaker, consider the Vdara. The rooms are very nice - can get a sweet view of the Bellagio fountains - and cost reasonable. Pool is nice. And you're right next door to Aria, Cosmo, Bellagio and the Monte Carlo. Location is outstanding.

Also I'll take diet advice. I need to lose 20lbs before July or I'll end up being the fat guy there with the smokeshow wife in her bikini and everyone wondering what the hell she's doing with me. TIa
If you want to lose 20 pounds fairly easy, do the Quick Weight Loss program, if you have those in your area. It is fairly expensive but if you did it between now and July faithfully, you would probably be down 30-35 pounds. Not guaranteeing you will keep it off afterward (I didn't) but it definitely works if you want to loss a lot of weight in a fairly short period of time.

Picking this up again:

Need the best hotel money can buy for a romantic getaway with the wife, a really nice pool, and something of a scene About halfway between old geezers at the slots and a bunch of drunk twenty two year olds flexing in the pool.

Aria and Cosmo are super nice too. But you're definitely in the right ballpark.
