Video games...what ya playing? And what are you looking forward to? (2 Viewers)

GTA V was a great game. I don't play online, but it is such an open world game, that you can play for hours. This talk of GTA VI got me itching a little bit, so I fired up GTA V on the XBOX S. I have to start over because my old game was on the XBOX one, but that is ok, because it is still fun to play. It was a great game at the time it was made considering it has been out for 10 years now and originally came out on the old generation consoles. I have realized that in my early 50s I am not the gamer that I used to be, things that used to be easy, I have to try over and over to get completed.

Agree with everything but to play devils advocate on your skills- GTA games have some of the worst, clunkiest controls out there.

That’s doesn’t mean you can compete in twitch shooters but I think you’ll get your mogo back in that game after awhile.
It really sucks getting older. I am 54 and it seems when I step away from a game, I forget everything about the controls. I haven't played BG3 in a bit and I know I am going to struggle going back in.

It is one of the things I hated about Red Dead Redemption 2. I would forget the controls and punch someone every time I started a conversation. My poor horse always took a beating because I could never get how to get on him.
I just finished that one and I only used the dead eye mechanic like twice … because I couldn’t remember what buttons to press to trigger it.

Same problem here and it’s compounded when there are combos required, like a fighting game or the Tony Hawk remaster. How do I do a McTwist again?
Used to love playing Madden for the franchise mode. I can't remember the last time I played now. 1) The franchise mode got stale and they were only worried about online play and MUT. 2) I started sucking at mashing buttons with all of the different moves you had to make and the "coach mode" flat out sucked.

RDR2 had uniquely bad controls though. Great game, horrible controller mapping.

All rue but IIRC, you can re-map your buttons on xbox.

Fntastic dev studio shutters after their scam is found out. The Day Before... apparently had a near 2-hour tutorial, which is the length of playtime you can have and still be able to refund on Steam.

I really hope this causes some reform in the wild west that is Early Access games.

I mean....anyone who bought the game after everything that happened during development KINDA deserves what they get here. You know what they say about a fool and their money....

Not saying its right, but this was about half a step short of getting an email from a Nigerian Prince. Everyone knew this game was a total trainwreck and possible vaporware months ago. Why on earth would anyone pay for it in early access? Let alone on day ONE?

I'm cracking up. I'm in that age range and have definitely had that happen to me. I have no mental capacity to memorize any combos, or, I'll memorize one combo and just do that one to death, to the point where my teenage kids will see me and say, "Dad! What are you doing! Just do this, it's so much easier!" And then I will rage that I was 90 percent through the game already, and knowing that other combo would've made things way easier. (Also, my kids don't seem to realize that even though I may play video games like an old man, none of their other friends' dads even play video games, so that makes me way cooler than those nerds.)

My last one left at home wants me to play COD with him only because he knows he will whip my but every time because by the time I find him and am ready to shoot, he has already killed me 5 times lol.

Holding off on Starfield. Probably for Steam sales in December and absolutely for QoL mods.

I’m having fun but there’s definitely some things that feel unfinished. This game could be really long term amazing - there’s a great base here for mods and DLC.

Going back through my posts in here, you’ll see that I was ready to love Starfield, warts and all. After playing it quite a bit and finishing the main quest, my final verdict is a truly objective and resounding “meh.”

DL Dead Space reboot for the PS5 from EA Play.

So stoked to play this updated version of the original game!!! It's not a remaster. It is a new version of the same game from the PS3.

It's good. They did the thing where they intentionally made the main female character ugly (of course), but otherwise it's a top-notch remake that you'll enjoy if you played the original. They changed some of the mechanics to give you an incentive to back-track more often, which is always fun in games like this. The new side quests are also mostly pretty good.

I wish this franchise had been more successful commercially. The lore is cool, and it scratches the same itch you get from action-oriented horror titles like Resident Evil.

I may have already asked this but have any of you played lethal company for the PC? It’s hilarious, nine dollars and low system requirements.

It’s scary and hilarious

Played all 3 on PS3 multiple times.

This sounds like a treat.

Playing Jedi Survivor and gotta say I dont like it as much as the first one. Navigation is a chore and I am constantly getting stuck figuring out where to go next. Plus all the side quests and items you found are pointless as they are all cosmetic. I dunno. Ill keep plugging away for now.

It took me a while to get into this, but it does pick up steam around the midpoint of the game or so and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. I liked it enough to want to go back and do a lot of the side content after I was done with the main story. But as you say, the navigation is a total trainwreck and ultimately I didn't want to deal with it and try to hunt obscure locations down.

Waaaaay too much puzzle-type platforming for me. 10 minutes of frustrating jumping around to get somewhere, 2 minutes of awesome fighting, rinse/repeat. I really wanted to like it but I grew frustrated and bailed about halfway through.

Been really enjoying Dave the Diver these past couple weeks, very addicting. This game does a lot of things without it feeling like too much

Grrrr…. So I made the mistake of buying and playing some old Rainbow 6 games and now my screen resolution OUTSIDE of steam is set to 800x600 and I can’t change it back in my graphic properties.

Any advice? This is only a 13” screen so it’s already small.

I hate computers. This is why consoles are so great.

Navigation was such a chore in this game. The story was great and so was the fighting but man trying to get around was a nightmare to me.

Yea I never went back and did all the side missions I wanted to do. Just too much of a chore.

Still enjoying spidey 2. Great game. Story a little boring/confusing but who cares you’re Spider-Man.

Spider-Man 2 is next after I finish up GoW Valhalla. Pretty excited for it. Then maybe Elden Ring DLC will have dropped by then.

Update- this ended up being pretty boring. Leave ship, lucky to make it inside a structure, pick up items one at a time and bring them back to your ship to sell. Rinse and repeat.

Meh.

Really enjoying GoW Valhalla, it's refreshing to get back to the basic combat.

its great. cant believe it was free. i would have paid money for it

What’s this now? Free?

if you own GOW ragnarok you can download valhalla for free. and its awesome. they basically made Kratos go through rooms like a rougelike game where you pick up different weapons, perks, etc in each room and have a different run each time. its alot of fun
i havent put it down since i got it. but i do really like rouge games so maybe its just me

Just finished The Medium. Only like 8 hours of gameplay…good story and atmosphere but no real combat or anything; wouldn’t necessarily recommend. Had good reviews though.

Sounds like an old computer? Usually a right click anywhere on the desktop got you to graphics properties where you can muck around.

Agreed except the old computer part. I used to be able to change the resolution to almost anything I wanted.

When I downloaded this old *** game, it had to update my direct X something or other and here we are

heh, my bad - when you said 13" screen I'm thinking an old CRT monitor and Windows 98!

I finally decided to call it good on Baldurs Gate 3. That was a fantastic game that was the closest thing I've ever played to a tabletop D&D session. But I stalled out in Act 3 after 120 hours -- I was burned out and had probably another 30 or so hours to go, and I couldn't bring myself to play anymore. Not a criticism at all - totally a "me" thing. I definitely got my $60 worth out of this, and way more. 10/10 if you're into turn-based RPGs. This game richly deserved all the GOTY awards it racked up.

Since then, I've batted around a couple of short palette-cleansers. First was the Separate Ways DLC for RE4, which was fine. It's more RE4, and it was more than worth the $10 price point, taking about 7 hours to complete the first time through. It's not as good as the base game of course. I'll definitely replay it at some point because I come back to RE4 every couple of years regardless, but it's not a priority or anything. Just a good, solid one-and-done for now. Like the other recent REmakes, you can unlock a bunch of stuff for higher difficulties, which adds some nice replayability. 7/10.

Then I picked up Doki Doki Literature Club for free on Steam. I was aware that this is an extremely dark, fourth-wall-breaking game, which is the sort of thing I tend to like. Otherwise I went in blind, which is the right thing to do for this title. This isn't really a "game" as much as its a barely-interactive story, and it is definitely not for everybody. Finished it in two significant sittings. It was fine, but I was expecting more "scary" and less "depressing." I will give the developer credit for making something original that I have never personally experienced before. 7/10.

Just stared Armored Core 6, which I almost bought when it came out, opting for BG3 instead. This is a mech combat game made by From Software, but it has nothing at all in common with any of the SoulsBorne titles that From is known for. I've never played anything else in this franchise, and goodness gracious is it complicated. I can see I'm going to have a learning curve here, and I'm looking forward to (eventually) being able to spend a lot of time tinkering with builds. I'm pretty sure the game just throws you into bite-sized combat missions (no exploration of any kind) that you can replay to acquire to $$ to buy new parts to strengthen your mech, which allows you to tackle tougher missions. Coming off a bunch of long and long-ish games like Elden Ring, RE4make, and BG3, the prospect of grinding out short-ish missions in a technical game where you can change your build on the fly sounds wonderful.

I have a few titles in mind for later on. I am definitely going to play Alan Wake 2 at some point, but I can wait a bit on that given that it's not on Steam and I can't be arsed to go looking for it (lazy and cheap). And Cyberpunk 2077 is apparently working properly now with good DLC content, so I'm going to have to go back to that one too. It's January 4 and I almost feel like I have six months of gameplay mapped out already.

Cyberpunk is always going to be marred by that horrible release, but it is truly a fantastic game at this point, at least on PS5. Best game I played last year.
I fired up the expansion and was so lost in what to do and how things work i bailed - lol i finished the original game so long ago its taking me some time to get into it again,

Definitely plan on playing Cyberpunk this year with the DLC. Have a friend who has stuck with it since release, and he tells me all the time I gotta play it now, in it's current state.

I bought the Metro series on sale for like $10. All three games and the DLC for the last one (Exodus, which i never played). Am into it now, and am enjoying it a lot. This is a good series - graphics, story, shooting, stealth... it's all pretty solid. It can be a bit clunky in places, but it's a realistic clunky. Things like changing your gas mask filters, wiping clean your visor, charging up your flashlight, etc.

These are cool games. Basically a cross of FPS and survival horror. I never played Exodus either but I should go back to that sometime.

I'm still plugging away at Starfield. Level 46 with a lot of the main quest to do and a decent amount of the galaxy still unvisited. But otherwise, really only one companion and faction quest left.

I'm playing a really good hidden gem RPG. Divinity II Dragon Knight Saga (you might have seen it years ago as Divinity II Eco Draconis or something like that. Its bundled with it's DLC now).

It's made by Larian, and was released back in 2011 or so - it's before the Divinity Original Sin games. And it's *nothing* like those - it's a third person RPG that plays like a mix between Skyrim and Dragon Age. It's got a little of that Eurojank charm, a big (mostly) open world, a really good skill/level system that lets you have all different types of characters, fairly simple controls/etc, and you can eventually turn into a dragon too. The story/quests are excellent, and it's a perfect mix of not too easy with magic quest markers, but not too complex either because the journal/etc will give you a good idea where to go. Oh, and no falling damage too, which is interesting. Tons of good loot (it's like Diablo where almost every weapon and armor piece you get has something going on and upgrade slots/etc - it's fun), and all the "systems", like upgrading weapons/etc, is fairly simple.

This game probably should have gotten a lot more attention than it did, but Skyrim and Dragon Age got all the press. It's like $30 on Xbox, and worth every penny. I'm really enjoying this a lot.

Hi GenX fan here... do you like old school arcade games from the 80s??
You should download Capcom Arcade Stadium available on Switch, Xbox, PS4, Steam

This program offers tons of coin-op classics that are available to play like Street Fighter, 1942, Commando, Strider, Ghosts & Goblins, Ghouls & Ghosts, and more. Plus for a few dollars extra you can buy an invincibly hack to avoid constant death. Back in the day they used to make these games super hard to eat up quarters. Happy retro gaming!

I have decided I am going to jump in full force on the 1.0 release of Last Epoch. I bought this game years ago when it was in early development.

Last Epoch is an ARPG which sits firmly in between the simplicity of Diablo and the need for a PHD to play Path of Exile.

This game has 1000's of hours written all over it for me :)

Here is a patch overview released today. It gives me a bit of a chill to know this started from a guy posting on reddit asking if anyone wanted to create a new ARPG with him....

I've been all over the place.

I just finished up GTA 4. Epic game. Learned the hard way playing 360 games on a Series X can cause issues. There's a glitch on the last mission, that you can't press A fast enough to get into the helicopter on Xbox One or Xbox series X/S.

I have my old 360, that I dust off once in a while to play NCAA Basketball 2010. I put it on there and was able to finish it. I've got a few other 360 games on my to do list. will probably just play them on the 360.

Next up: Jedi Survivor

yeah that gta 4 glitch is rough on my laptop when im playing with keyboard and mouse.
shame on rockstar for never fixing that. but i guesss its not suprising as its taking them 20 years to make another gta

Completely addicted to Balatro. Haven't felt this way about a game in years. 3 parts poker, 2 parts deck building, 1 part crappy CRT graphics, it's everything I want in a game. I can kill an hour on a single game and still not win the round. Killed a big part of the weekend. I've taken to at least listening to audiobooks while I play to at feel productive.

Playing on the PS5 (its on Steam and most platforms) so at least keeps the addiction at home, but it's coming to mobile soon and thinking of adding it to my Switch.
