Visiting Pittsburgh - Local Flavor Must Do Stuff (1 Viewer)

looking to book at the Drury, in the downtown area ... seems like a very sweet location for getting to most attractions of note.

anybody with experience at that jernt?

My son goes to the University of Pittsburgh, so I have some knowledge of the city. It's not a huge city, so easy to get around.

Staying downtown is fine - it's a nice area and close to things. Not sure if the Pirates are in town, but if you're a baseball fan, I highly recommend taking in a game at PNC. One of the best, if not the best, MLB parks, with a sweet view of the skyline.

Other things to consider:

Duquesne Incline - a tram that takes you up Mount Washington

Mt Washington itself - some nice restaurants looking over the city

South Side - vibrant area with a lot of cool restaurants

Warhol Museum - small funky museum dedicated to the weird guy who lived there

Cathedral of Learning - historical building on the University of Pittsburgh campus

No shortage of restaurants - you'll probably want to try a Primanti Brothers burger and if you're downtown and a taco guy, I recommend Condado's for cheap great tacos.

Enjoy - it's a great, highly underrated city. I would move there in a heartbeat.

:hifive:

much appreciated!

i visited a couple times, but 25+ years ago, back when i was just partaking in the "night life", which i enjoyed very much - it's a very cool looking city, yes ... last time there i stayed in Sewickley (don't ask), so the views of Pittsburgh from that vantage point were pretty sweet.

trip got bumped to a couple weeks from now ... booked pretty sweet first class rd trip air, and the hotel is pricey, but well worth the plunk - great reviews, especially for the staff, which is most important to me.

i was just talking to the gf about the incline & the Pirates ... they are in town that weekend, so the 7:05 Friday vs the Cards is gonna get done - i have to see that park if i'm there, yes - and i'm told it's a stroll over the Roberto Clemente bridge from the hotel.

gf was none too thrilled about the incline, but we going 😁

first thing she inquired about was the Warhol museum, so that is a definite hit for us - as is Primanti, good lookin' out.

my daughter does have her dance biz to see to for most of one day, but we'll have a solid weekend to scope what the city has to offer - thank you for your suggestions - South Side, Mt Washington, incline ... we'll knock those out first full day.

If you're into amusement parks I highly recommend Kennywood Park.   It is one of the best traditional parks with some attractions dating to the 1920s.   It has a decent selection of roller coasters.

There are quite a few very good museums in Pittsburgh.  If you're into biking there are some trails along the Allegheny river and especially the Mon River Trails (also great for hiking/running).  Also check out Bicycle Heaven, it is a cool little museum

There is a TopGolf about 10 miles south of the city which is a lot of fun for both golfers and non-golfers

You should also check out the Strip District, especially on a Saturday morning.  Cool atmosphere, stores, street vendors and some good restaurants

A few other cool places to eat:

Altius and Monterey Bay are expensive but the food is good and have great views of the city

Church Brew Works has decent food and really cool atmosphere

Market Square is worth going to and has a couple decent restaurants.  The pizza at Pizzaiolo Primo is really good and the fish sandwiches at the Original Oyster House are tasty.

I'll second these. Have eaten/drank a few times at Church Brew Works (in South Side). A big church that was converted into a restaurant - decent food as GB says and great beer selection.

looks like a ton of great choices - we'll have no shortage of exploring & good eats (and drink, for me).  appreciate the heads up on all these, GB ✌

that Saturday morning Strip District stroll sounds right up the wheelhouse - IN!

biking/hiking sound sweet, the Allegheny River trek looks top notch.

once we knock her dance auditions out the way, we'll be free to check out most of the attractions & activities both you & Zamboni recommended - thanks again ✌

Was in Pittsburgh last week and went to Primanti Brothers for lunch based on all the love it go in this thread.  I'm sorry amigos, but that place is overrated.  Gross sandwich with some fries stuffed in.

A roast beef from Arbys with their curly fries stuffed under the bun would be better.

if it was down in the strip district you should have gone next door to Wholeys Fish market and restaurant for their fish sandwich ...excellent and ginormous.

I always get the Pastrami and it is awesome.

Yes, overrated but something you have to try once

Was also there last weekend visiting my son (senior at Pitt). Hit Church Brew Works for the third time - really like that place. And of course, saw Pitt knock off once-mighty Clemson. :towelwave:

Primanti not Arbys

Capicola and cheese hit the spot for me.  I would get one of those monthly when I was in my early 20s.  Would probably die of a heart attack if I did that in my 40s.

If only one of those a month would give you a heart attack in your 40's, what are you eating the rest of the time?  Deep fried butter?

Pro tip:  You don't get a burger at Primanti's.   JFC.  Y'all go to a rib joint and order the trout, don't you?

Everytime I hear someone not liking Primantis they likely did it wrong. the sandwich is bland without a ton of hot sauce because of the fries. With hot sauce being absorbed by the fries it is awesome. Roast beef, pastrami or capicola.

I don't drown it with hot sauce but I do add some.   My question is how can a sandwich with pastrami, cheese, coleslaw, french fries, tomatoes on Italian bread be bad?

That said as much as I love it I do know a few people that do not.  To each his own I guess...

headed to Pittsburgh for a guy's weekend this week. gonna catch the Penguins on Saturday and the Steelers on Sunday. Staying in the Strip District. Definitely gonna hit Primanti, but could use some other suggestions for watering holes, especially within walking distance.

You're practically walking distance from Lawrenceville (The 91 bus runs right up there if the walk is too far). There are a town of good bars right up Penn Ave (slight left onto Butler). I have some friends coming in this weekend and we'll be at Industry watching Penn State Saturday (noon kickoff). Butler and 43rd. You're welcome to pop in for a meet-a-FBG and a beverage.

If you like sushi definitely go to Wholley's fish market in the Strip. Andy's sushi is excellent and he is quite the character. They also have great fish sandwiches there.

There are some good watering holes in the strip but there is a lot that are nearby.

Lawrenceville has great breweries/restaurants/bars and you might want to check out Engine House 25 Winery. They only use grapes from NAPA and Chile so they have some very good reds (most other local wineries use locally grown grapes or from Erie which is fine if you like sweet wines). Engine House 25 is in an old firehouse and they also host the Clemente Museum. The Church Brew Works is a brewery in an old Catholic Church. It is also in Lawrenceville .

After the Steelers game you might want to take a short drive to Penn Brewery for great beer and German food. The brewery was originally built in the 1800's so very cool atmosphere with the old lagering caves.

Sienna Mercato has a nice rooftop bar downtown which is a short walk from the Strip District. They have a retractable roof and heaters so you can go even if it's cool or raining. The Proper Brick Oven is a little further downtown in the cultural district that has excellent food and great beer selection.

Are Mineo’s, Napoli’s, and Aiello’s still all on Murray (?) in Squirrel Hill? Triumvirate of goodness back in the day.

So, my 16 yr old son is a big ole' Steelers fan and I've secured a trip to their next home game vs Saints on 11/13. This will be the first time for either of us to be in the city. We'll be coming in late on the 12th and staying somewhere cheap between the airport and downtown (I'm driving in and picking him up at the airport).

What is an economical way to navigate getting to the stadium and experiencing a Steeler's game? We plan to grab dinner downtown after the game and then head out. Any and all suggestions welcome. I haven't even told him yet, but this is going to be a very, very big deal to him. He's seen 3 Steelers games in Arrowhead, all losses to the Chiefs and he's sick of it. Hoping to see TJ Watt back on the field and a Steelers W. I'm not a fan personally, but can't help but root for them as much as my son cares about the team.

He would probably like the Jerome Bettis restaurant at Point State Park. If it's still there.

If you are referring to Grille 36 by the stadium, no it closed about a year ago.

Not sure yet. Haven't booked it....just decided for sure and bought tickets over the weekend.

Gonna be in Pittsburgh Sept 8th thru 12th for the opener vs the 49ers, we have an itinerary for the most part but have no plans Monday afternoon/night. Friends we're staying with are in Mt Washington. Anything nearby worth doing/checking out? Breweries? Cool food spots? Fun stuff?

I'd make it a double bill and take in Pirates v Nationals at the best ballpark in all of MLB: PNC park.
Tickets are ludicrously inexpensive.

Quick plug for Penn Brewery. The first craft brewery in Pittsburgh, located the old Eberhardt & Ober Brewery which was founded before the civil war. The lagering caves have been partially restored and are a must-see. They originally brewed only german lagers but now brew all styles. If you can't get over there they are having a launch party for their new line of ciders on Sept 8 at Cavo in the strip district.

First time spending a lot of time here. OMFG what a beautiful city.

The people are even better.

Food is meh. Y’all just smash everything together into a fried mess and call it food. lol.

Recommend this place:

Pamela’s is the bomb.
I suspect you dined at sub-optimal locations.

Im fully admit I am pretty picky eater. I really wish I wasn’t. I try new stuff all the time but it rarely works out.

Sushi is about as exotic as I get. Now that I’ve been to Hawaii it’s ruined for me on the mainland.

Was watching the bumper shots from the game on Monday and thinking I've got to check this city out soon. How are Steelers games for other fans?

While I’ve never attended a Steelers game in their stadium, I think If I were to pick one team out the NFL who’s fans would be most welcoming, the Steelers would probably top the list. Green Bay comes to mind as well.

Been there as a Steelers fan and never noticed the type of stuff you would see on the other side of the state.

Fight at Acrisure stadium turns up a lot for the Backyard Brawl and an incident where cops were fighting after a concert, but none of the nonsense you might see elsewhere.

Its a cool city for sure. I went to the Steelers - 49ers game last year with a few Steeler fans, I wore SF gear and had a blast, even though we blew them out I didn't experience or see any issues.

Just don't be a jerk and you'll be fine.

Niners fans are one thing. And, frankly, the vast majority of visiting fans to Heinz Field will only take some mild ribbing. But if you come in Ravens or Patriots gear (and if you’re a jerk), some serious trash talk or the occasional fight could occur.

Used to go to Pamela’s all the time when my son was at Pitt - right there next to campus.

As far as restaurants go, I’ll echo what others have said - tons of good ones is South Side, Shadyside, Strip District, etc.

Great city - miss it a lot.
