what club do you hit from 152 yds? (1 Viewer)

I haven't played in over 11 years, but that was an old school 7 iron for me which is the Ping Eye2 and is 35 degree loft. Manufacturers have gone nuts and really don't standardize lofts - just looked up the Titleist T350 irons and their 7 iron is 29 degrees ...which based on loft is right in the middle of my 5 and 6 irons.

Still have these bad boys. May get back into one of these days.

I played much better when my 7 iron was 148-152 every time. Now I'm 30 years older and my 9 iron is 130-160. I guess they did that to get us to buy 3 specialized wedges?

smooth 8 iron

when I became an adult - and had been playing for more than a decade - it was a 5 iron

most of my clubs are 2 or 3 clubs stronger than they used to be

used to be there was a roughly 4 degree difference between each club

now it's more like 2.5 degrees

the 7 iron I hit today is the same loft and distance (170) of my old 4 iron

old man, limber, moderate swing speed - pretty much everyone I play with swings harder, like 20 mph faster

it usually takes longer to find their shots (I was going to type balls then I remembered where I was)

Yeah my PW that came with my set is 43 degrees. I actually carry two clubs labeled "PW" to fill the gap.

Some days its a hard 8, others its a smooth 7. Used to be a 9. Depends on how I'm swinging. But mostly if I am trying for 152 it will likely be on front right edge just off the green.

Right now I am a 14 handicap. My scoring range is usually an 82 low, to a 90 high depending on the course.

150 Used to be an 8, but last few years I was always short even with good ball flight. Now my 7 is my 150.

I notice when I am playing with players who are like myself or worse, 90% of our misses from 150 and in are short, never a good ball flight and long. When I play with scratch golfers they hit the green, or if they miss it is the correct distance right or left. They hit the ball the correct distance.

Saw an episode of playing a round with Tiger Woods and he said the average weekend golfers biggest mistake is not taking enough club. If everything is 100% perfect and your 8 goes 150 then hit a 7, because it rarely is perfect for weekenders. Also said that most weekenders over estimate how far all of their clubs go.

There is a guy in my golf league we call "One club short Tom." No matter what iron he hits it always lands 5 yards short of the green. Then if he hit a 9 he says "shoulda hit an 8" but he never changes.

8 iron.

On this past Saturday I got a chance to play at Dodger Stadium with the Stadium Links set up. For those that don't know it is essentially a Top Golf like set up where you hit from the stands and try and drop it onto the outfield grass. They set up 9 holes varying from 60-150 yds. You hit from all different levels as they have the tee boxes set up all over the place.

We bought the extra balls so we got three shots from each tee box. We counted a par if you either hit the green on the fly (there was no controlling the bounce off these things) or if your ball ended up on the green. A birdie if you landed or finished within the circle they had drawn. Bogey if you didn't do any of those things. My goal was to get a par/birdie on one of my first two shots then tried to hit a homer with the third. I made 3 pars, a birdie and had 4 homers. It was a great day. hahaha

As I get older, I can see the change. Used to be a PW, but now it's a 9 from that distance. And if there is a breeze, or maybe slightly uphill, Ill hit an 8. I hate getting older.
