What happened at the Lions presser? (1 Viewer)

Oof!

Footballguy
FOX was just talking about the "idiot" reporter asking Marinelli questions. Missed who it was and what was said.

Recap?

I'm kind of astonished by it. Rob Parker, of The Detroit News, was grilling Coach Marinelli about defensive coordinator Joe Barry (who is also Marinelli's son in law). Parker asked Marinelli a couple of times why Barry was still employed and he was basically goading Marinelli to place all blame on Barry. Marinelli took the high road and placed the blame on himself.

THEN...Rob Parker decides to ask Marinelli if he wishes that his daughter married a better defensive coordinator.

What a disgrace...I hope this guy apologizes for his lack of professionalism.

Wholly crap. That's grounds for canning his butt. Thanks for the explanation.

No question the reporter is a doosh but the owner should have put the kabosh on him hiring is son in law for a top coaching position on the team. Its like when Schottenheimer wanted to hire his brother as the D coordinator in San Diego told him no way and if he didnt like it he could take a walk.

Rob Parker is a race baiting doosh. He's been a loser in the detroit sports community for years. What he writes is just pure garbage. I think they set him up to be the "lightning rod" guy though.

when a team is 0-15, the reporters owe it to the fans to ask these questions and crack these jokes
If you listened to the interview you would know that he wasnt just "cracking jokes" The whole Q&A session was mean spirited and that was his parting shot. Rob Parker's full intention was to belittle and embarrass the man.

Is the Detroit News a Gannett paper? They use that strategy here in Indy? Make outrageous comments and sell papers.

Rod Marinelli has to make himself available per NFL Rules but he doesn't need to answer questions regarding personal issues and who is daughter chooses to marry. NFL may want to think over the policy of making coaches or players available after games and during the week. We are starting to see a trend of reporters trying to goad players and coaches into saying things and also we are seeing reporters trying to start controversies. I don't understand why the NFL doesn't close all practices and locker rooms to the media and only make it optional for Coaches to speak to the media after a game.

Fans love the product on the field they could care less of news conferences and player interviews.

I think the guy took a poorly timed opportunity to ask a perfectly fair question, but came off looking like kind of a #### just because he kept badgering marinelli about it.

The true ###es here are Ford and Marinelli. Parker's hardly an angel, but they were begging for this type of reaction, Parker just went a little overboard with it.

Why would a NFL team allow a HC to hire his SIL?? Only the Detroit Lions. And the sad part is all of them may be back!

Rob Parker likes to stir the pot.

Parker always grills Marinelli...at the end he said "On a lighter note..do you wish your had daughter married a better DC?"

His email is rob.parker@detnews.com the editor of the paper is Jonathan Wolman. I am firing an email to all the top brass there demanding a public apology from Mr. Parker.

:coffee: Why do you care that much?
Because this is what society is turning into. 20 years ago we didn't have journalists asking coaches these kinds of questions. Society as a whole finds it acceptable that people can just disrespect others and there should be no punishment or discipline involved.

Have to agree. Sounds like the reporter asking it is an idiot, but seems sort of a fair point to make. Detroit's defense could be the worst in NFL history. Seriously. Check out FootballOutsider's rankings: LINKThe guy actually made the argument earlier in the season that the defense isn't that bad, they just give up 5 or 6 really bad plays a game. Uh, yeah, that's kind of the difference between a good NFL defense and a bad NFL defense. Good defenses don't give up those 5 or 6 plays. Bad defenses do. The margin of error in the NFL is VERY slim.

If you hire family for important roles on your team, and that part of your team is a failure of epic proportions, I think it's fair game to question why that person still has a job.

The real question is, why haven't other reporters made this an issue previously? Someone that maybe could have done it in a less offensive manner maybe.

Yep, and 20 years ago those neighbor kids knew to stay off our lawns too.Seems like a waste of time and energy to get outraged over something like this.

when your team is 0-15, reporters have every right to ask about the impact of nepotism might have towards contributing to this fiasco. When you hire family, they will be held to a higher standard.

Worked for them in TB. When you don't have the personnel to run a basic defense, you'll be exposed no matter who you are.

They have every right to ask questions, even tough questions about decisions. But the crack about his daughter marrying a better DC was way out of line, and I would've been in full support of Marinelli walking down off the podium and cold cocking his sorry ###.

20 years ago it was common for the boss to hire their unqualified sons or sons-in-law over better qualified employees. It's called nepotism and there was no punishment, discipline or even anyone to call them out for it. 30 years ago, those who questioned authority when blacks weren't promoted were called ###es and worse.

Like I said, Parker is no angel, but someone needs to question the Fords and Marinelli here.

 He has done this stuff all year and basically it defines him. He is a tool. :lmao:
That's not entirely accurate. He has done this stuff for 15 years.I don't want anyone to think Parker is having a bad year because his local radio show got cancelled. This is the same reporter who said Hank Aaron is a coward for not attending Barry Bonds record breaking game for career HRs.

 I thought Parker hit rock bottom when he completely made up his story about Kirk Cousins being the football player who was involved in the assault of the MSU hockey player this fall. I was glad Dantonio called him out on that and the paper forced him to issue an apology to Cousins and his family for his erroneous news "report." He just likes to do stuff like this to draw attention to himself -- that's his MO. Must have low self esteem or something.

Don't know anything about Rob Parker. Maybe he's an ###. But I can't blame him one bit for his questions. The Lions are a total joke and the apparent nepotism is actually icing on the cake for making Marinelli one of the worst coaches ever in the history of the game.

I agree with everything you said, except the blame goes to Ford moreso than Marinelli. On all things.

The guys asks the SAME question multiple times after every game and in the presser he has on Monday's.

Joe Barry - the DC of the Lions - was the Bucs LBs coach for six years. During that time, Tampa Bay sent a LB to the pro bowl 6 times.

Did he forget how to coach the last two years, or do you think he just has less talent.

The defense is awful and Barry deserves some of the blame. But the idea that he got the job solely because he married the daughter of the HC is absurd. It's not nepotism if the candidate is qualified.

#1 - the question was funny as hell and it exactly the type of questions my and my pals would have asked if we were there.

#2 - there is a real good reason why my pals and I are not professional reporters.

What a Jerk, I would love to see him pull a stunt like that with a Parcells or a Buddy Ryan.
