People actually watch less because of "quality of the product"?

:lmao:

My brain doesn't even know what that is.

I would probably go to a party and toss in a few bucks to split the cost. It would make money in the short term but be a long term net negative for the sport. See boxing.
Not sure the old fat cats care about the future.
Seems like they wanna run it that way
Watcha ya talking about?

The league has been spot on for 5 plus decades.
Hunt, Mara, Rooney, etc >>>>>> Snyder, Jones, etc.

Give it time. The new brand of owners is slowly pissing away what made the NFL great for all the teams (and fans) one decision toward more money at all costs at a time.

One more day for the draft, one more day of the week with games, one more holiday with games, a few more playoff teams, a few more commercial breaks, a few less games on free TV for all, soon a few more teams, etc, etc, etc.

Yet they lie their asses off when it comes to every major "investigation" the league conducts, and they expect everyone to buy their BS. It's more and more insulting each year, and eventually a levee breaks. For some it never will, and a sucker is born every minute, so I fully expect the graft to get worse before it gets better.

Maybe a few more owners have to get forced to sell because they did horrible things behind the scenes, maybe a few more cities have to be abandoned by their teams, maybe a few other cities have to get hit with multi-billion dollar stadium costs.

Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. By all appearances the NFL has stopped just being a pig.
One more day for the draft - Brillaint move. As was moving it to primetime Thursday night from the middle of Saturday.
one more day of the week with games - Awesome for fans who like options.
one more holiday with games - Another windfall and crushes watching Mircle on 34th with the MIL.
a few more playoff teams - Yeah, I hate more exciting games and more meaningful games late in the season too.
a few more commercial breaks - Agree with you here but with the world at your fingertips it's not hard to find something to pass 2-3 minutes.
a few less games on free TV - Your most valid point.

Too many playoff teams cheapen the regular season imo. Just like those that want to double the number of teams in march madness.

The larger point being the owners of late rarely, if ever, do what's best for the product long-term. They solely do what's best for their pocket books short-term.

That's not how the game was built, nor is it why the NFL overtook boxing, baseball, etc to become America's sport. Some of those changes have been good (like the draft, as you noted), but let's not pretend the product on the field plays any role in these decisions. Slowly they are making the game worse.

As someone that goes on a road trip to watch a game with friends in a new city each year, seeing the discussion to move late season games from Thursday and/or Monday is an f'ing joke. Moving game times within Sunday is understandable, but of course that's not enough. The fan experience just doesn't factor into these decisions. Heck, try tailgating before a game. It's not possible at some stadiums and is getting more and more difficult in others.

At least the league is doing what it can to improve the game on TV. Or not. We're still subjected to a ridiculous amount of game stoppages, 1st downs decided by chains, field goal posts that don't go high enough, and turf fields that beat the hell out of the players. Add in a schedule that has less parity with teams facing historic rest gaps with opponents.

The owners have taken their eye off the ball. Unless that ball was blocking a fan from placing a bet on a league sanctioned website. Anyway, football is family. 🙄

Personally I like the current 7 in, 9 out format. Anyone .500 or better after 14 weeks is still in the equation.

Good posting.

Peacock has about 21M subscribers. The number of NFL fans is that several times over. So what happens when streaming services start picking up games here and there like the one they got from the NFL for the exclusive playoff game on January 13, 2024? Will more people buy yet another streaming service or will the NFL regret this and lose fans?

I'm curious what the diehards think because, admitedly, my interest in football has waned considerably in the past 8-9 years so I'm curious but don't consider myself a good sample poller.
