What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (2 Viewers)

One thing that can be said about the mega-brewers is their consistency is impressive. Miller-Coors produces billions of gallons of beer and its all perfectly consistent in taste and color, which is really an impressive feat when you consider the brewing process is not like making soda.
*Goose Island exception

AB-InBev is clearly tanking the BCS products to ruin the brand.

My understanding from day one is that acquisition was driven by 312, which Bud wanted to compete with Blue Moon in the (at the time) hot summer wheat beer market. I'm sure Bud wants nothing to do with warehousing beer in wood barrels, and they sure as hell don't want any of that funky yeast (sisters) anywhere near their buildings. If Goose Island is suffering, my guess is its probably at least in part due to the founder(s) becoming multi-millionaires overnight and no longer having an ownership stake in the product.

I have been slowly dipping my toes into the IPA pool.  I don't know if this would be considered an IPA, but I like Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale.  I figure it has the 'PA' part of IPA so it might be close haha.  And that beer is only 5% which is nice.  So I guess I am dipping my toes in the IPA pond.  "We have a pool and a pond... pond would be good for you".
There is definitely quite a bit of blurring the line between APAs and IPAs going on out there.

 i dunno. been a season since i've had any of the BCS offerings. i've never noticed a difference in quality of the GI beers i have drank, though.

I've got a few old ones in my cellar but don't have the interest or energy to chase BCS anymore. I was very happy to see Sophie and Matilda show up at my local Costco a couple years ago - a couple bucks cheaper than at the bottle shops in town. I'm not sure whether that's due to the ABinBev distribution connections.

"I had a 2016 bottle in the last few days. Mine was definitely not infected, but it was also the worst batch I have ever had. Thin, harsh, licorishy.I heard that lots of 2016 was infected, and they dumped a lot. They said that prop was infected so maple was repurposed for prop. "

thinking of firing up a GI BCS speculation blog

IMO the 2016 BCBS is outstanding. Personally, I think that the "this year's _______________ sux" is just bandwagon group-think nonsense that we we hear every year about every single major limited release. It's trendy to just bash away; probably moreso with GI since they've been owned by InBev. Besides, you just know that the same neck-beards complaining on the beer boards were among those standing outside in line all night Thursday at LP Binny's to make sure that they got their full allotment including variants and vintage bottles.

My "chasing" involved 15 minutes on the phone and driving for 5 minutes out of the way when I left the office to pick up a sammich at lunch. I'm OK with my one bottle (in all honesty, I'll probably also swing through Whole Foods over lunch Friday to grab another and a BW at their low-key release).

I remember the old days when beer geeks used to discuss Celebration every year - which spices SN was using as the recipe changed from year to year. Then someone asked Sierra Nevada about the beer and they said its been the same recipe for over 30 years - pale malt with a bit of caramel for color, fresh c-hops and Chico yeast - a basic American hoppy ale.

Probably assumed it was similar to Anchor OSA, since they come out around the same time.

You can't claim "best batch ever. Glad it's back on track" if you didn't trash it the year before. Happens out here with Younger every year. Everyone who said last year's batch was off will love this year's, and everyone who thought last year's was back will undoubtedly claim this year's sucks.

I will say my annual Thanksgiving bourbon vanilla porter will most likely not be as good as last year's batch or the year before. I had too many hot scotchies, had the Chelsea-Spurs game on, too many people in my garage passing different christmas beers around, and missed my OG by over 10 points.

Really feel for those poor bastards getting to have Younger every year...tough cross to bear for sure.

I am seriously thinking about going back to Hailstorm for more of that Hipster....that was one of the best stouts I've had. Just incredible.

Had to fill those pre-trades for whalezbro.

They have another one coming out in a couple of weeks too. Santa's Cookies and Milk stout. Imperial milk stout with brown sugar, chocolate chips, cinnamon, and vanilla.

TG releasing Assassin and KBBS jointly in January. Random draw for 1000 tickets, $200 gets you 2 bombers of Assassin and a 12 oz. KBBS. Can only imagine what those KBBSs are going to command on the secondary market. Just obscene.

That's ####### stupid.
Yeah, it is. But in some ways, I almost don't blame them -- the last release of KBBS ('14) was selling for well over $1K / 12 oz. bottle -- I'd rather see the brewery make more of that $ as opposed to the reseller. Still awful, but slightly less so in context.

If they charge 100/btl  all it will do is just drive up the price on the secondary market though.

And drinking Undercrown (so effing good, mosaic juice bomb) and a howler of The Queen's Lair (not bad, but I expect much more from an 18th Street APA).

Yeah, probably true. Even if I were local and could just go buy it with no hassle, big 'ol "nope" for me just on principle. Be interesting to check the ISO:FT after the release to see what people want / are getting though.

Not that far off from BCBS Rare though really -- particularly the prices that people paid for Rare this year. Whatever the market will bear, I guess.

Difference is Rare isn't just an imperial barrel aged coffee stout, that's BCBS Coffee. And the prices for Rare were entirely dictated by the retailer. Regardless I won't be buying anymore of these stupid expensive beers. There are way too many beers that are close enough that cost 10-15/btl.

Just had some BCBS '15 and '16 on tap. When compared side to side, the '15 has clearly mellowed a bit. A little less "barrel bite" than was present last year or even in any of the '16 (both bottled and tap) that I've had. They were thoroughly enjoyed.

Anyone who thinks either of these beers somehow suck is just a completely spoiled insufferable beer nerd. These are outstanding, simply world class brews.

To play Devil's Advocate, KBBS is a more highly regarded beer from a much more highly regarded brewery overall, and maybe 1K bottles are released every few years vs tens (hundreds?) of thousands of bottles every year. Of course, the "rare" hugely influences both the price and the ratings, but they're broadly comparable IMO.

Either way, I agree with you on the bottom line -- IMO KBS or regular BCBS @ $22 / 4 or $12 / 16 oz >>>>>>>> $100 for anything, and that much more so considering the relative lack of effort involved.

Exercising good work night judgement tonight -- ignored the bomber of Necron 99 (new FFF DIPA) in my fridge and cracked a 12 oz Space Station Middle Finger instead.

Agree 100% .  This is getting out of hand but if someone wants to drop $100 on 12 oz of water, barley, and hops.....more power to them. I won't.

Dumb.  Why not just buy a bottle of bourbon?

Next two "In the Shadows" from 18th Street hit today. Look slike these are going to be pretty regular which is awesome. The last two were fantastically good. Looks like my happy a$$ will be cruising over to Gary tomorrow. Drew is just absolutely killing it lately IMO.

"Available on draft and to go in Hammond (3pm in Gary):

Beware the False Prophet 5.7% Pale Ale. A smooth bodied pale ale brewed with Pilsen malt and flaked oats is hopped with Zythos and Falconers Flight, and then heavily dry hopped with Falconers Flight. Expect hints of Honey Suckle and Melon. $11 4 pack. Limit 4.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on Hipster.

At the bar and got a Breakfast Stout, then the bartender sent my wife a peppermint brown cow (basically a frozen ice cream drink). We got towards the end of both and I mixed them. It was an amazing peppermint chocolate coffee.
