What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (4 Viewers)

Drinking a Central Waters Y2K while bottling a batch of homebrew yesterday and thinking, "if only I could brew beer like this, I'd never have to be a lawyer again."

I'm going to the Vail Big Beers, Belgians, and Barleywines Festival up in Vail this weekend. I went last year, and it was the best beer festival that I have ever been to -- just a ridiculous selection of rare, big barrel-aged beers being personally poured by some of the most legendary owners and brewers in the American craft beer scene (i.e., Sam Calagione from Dogfish Head, Adam Avery from Avery, Adam Firestone and David Walker from Firestone Walker, Corey King from Perennial and Side Project, etc.). Here is the preliminary beer list program for the Big Beers festival.

Heading to Ft Lauderdale Saturday for Funky Buddha's Maple Bacon Coffee Porter day...they're gonna have a ton of beers on, inclung some rare BA stuff...also gonna visit J Wakefield in Miami while I'm down there, I hope they have something good on for growlers.

That looks like an awesome event. It's cool that, in addition to Funky Buddha's own impressive lineup of beers, they have a guest tap list featuring great beers from Cigar City, J. Wakefield, Wicked Weed, and lots more. Don't miss getting a pour of Funky Buddha's Rye Whiskey Kona Snowed In if you haven't had it yet, as that was one of my favorite beers from Denver Rare Beer Tasting and I thought it compared very favorably to Bourbon County Prop (2014). Keep us posted on any standout beers from MBCP Day and J. Wakefield.

Kona Snowed In is definitely on my short list of must tries that day.

WOW! That will be spectacular.

Just zipped by the kiosk for two cases of Zombie Dust and 4 bombers of Amber Smashed Face. No line at all today.

Looks like a great time buck. Be sure to have an espresso yeti for me...

I'm going over to Crooked Stave's 5th anniversary party when I get off work. They are tapping some of their older, rare beers as well as a number of guest taps, including some yet-to-be-named Cantillon, Bell's Bourbon Barrel-Aged Black Note, Perennial Abraxas, Fremont Bourbon Barrel-Aged Dark Star, and some other stuff from Jackie O's and Arizona Wilderness. It should be a cool event. I hope I get over there in time for a pour of Cantillon.

ok stout guys, coeur, ditka, ilov80's, buck, etc...

going to a huge bottle store tomorrow to pick up some pretty things fumapapa, but also just went over their stock. there were a lot of selections, but more than i can spend. all ranged from low to high 90 rankings on BA.

thoughts on the below if you have tried them. give me your top 3 if you can for me to try. all of these are 22-25 oz growlers.

ballast point victory at sea porter 220z. (i have tried and is 1 of my favs, although the 120z i had was a bit off last time.)

epic big bad baptist stout (again, have tried and one of my favs)

great divide chocolate yeti (next to their espresso, probably my fav beer)

the rest of these i have not tried:

evil twin the mini dingo imp. stout. (got the lowest ranking on BA but was curious about the spicy pepper thing.)

alesmith speedway stout

grimm double negative imp. stout

nectar ales black xantus

against the grain bo & luke imp. (it's aged in PVW barrels which sounds cool)

any opinions appreciated. thanks

I would definitely get the Against the Grain Bo & Luke. I've never had it before, but I think Against the Grain does some great barrel-aged stuff and I wouldn't pass up a Pappy Van Winkle-aged beer. Plus, it has great ratings on BeerAdvocate. I've also never had that Humboldt Nectar Ales Black Xantus, but it sounds pretty interesting having been aged in bourbon, oak, and wine barrels and infused with coffee.

I'd go with either Chocolate Yeti or Big Bad Baptist with my third selection.

I would agree with Buckfast on the PVW aged Bo and Luke. Besides the first three you listed, the only other I have had is Speedway and it's a pretty good stout.

I would also like to try the Black Xantus.

I am going to go say unless you can get it at any time (we get a lot of it here in Chicago now that Alesmith is back) to go with Speedway Stout or Grimm Double Negative but only because you seem to drink a lot of Yeti and Big Bad Baptist anyway.

Thanks buck. Got 2 big bad Baptist now and my local place has them as well as yeti.

Bo and Luke and xantus it is

Í can get yeti and Baptist pretty easy.

The grimm sounds pretty interesting to me too, so I think I am at bo and Luke, speedway and throw a dart between Grimm and xantus...unless I just put a fumapapa back :-)

Or just spend an extra $12 or so and get all 4?

I'm spending way too much on beer already :-) $10 here, $12 there, $15 here.....stuff adds up way too fast. I am not your typical FBG who pulls in a mill a year ya know...

I understand. But I guess if you are spending say...$125..what's an extra $12?

I'm going to start sounding like my wife...but honey it was marked down so by getting it today I saved us money....

I'd definitely go with Speedway over Black Xantus. I've had the Xantus and came away unimpressed. Speedway is pretty legendary in its own right.

I had a bunch of good stuff at Crooked Stave's anniversary party (although I missed the Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus):

Perennial Abraxas

Crooked Stave Silly Cybus dark sour with raspberries (one of my favorite Crooked Stave beers of the year)

Crooked Stave Vielle Reserva with Apricots

Jackie O's Wood Ya Honey wheatwine aged in bourbon barrels

Lots of other Crooked Stave samplers

And a Thirsty Dog Wulver when I got home.

 Trust the man that has had it over the one that hasn't!
There's nothing wrong with the Xantus and I'd definitely try it again, but straight-up, I can only pick one, I'll pick Speedway every time. The Xantus I had, at least, doesn't hold up to the giants like Speedway.

Second the recommendations for Speedway -- and agree on Victory at Sea, Baptist, and Yeti. In general, I'd recommend trying a bunch of new stuff in addition to grabbing known favorites. There's a ton of great beer out there just waiting to be consumed. And it's hugely subjective, too, so IMO don't be afraid to include lesser known / less highly rated stuff in the mix from time to time. I'm also a fan of trying / supporting local breweries in addition to the big guys that have a wide distro footprint. You can find some really great stuff that way, and growler fills usually = good bang for your $ and ultra-fresh brew.

thanks lion,

will def try the speedway now. have been trying some of the local breweries.

i'm a fan of olde hickory brewing. they make a really decent imp stout and i did try their event horizon bourbon stout at a party a couple of weeks back which was decent, although i did like the regular 1 better.

also have a couple of their lindley park stouts that have a 95 on BA that i am going to let age a bit.

have tried triple c beers as well. ok but not great IMO. same goes for ########. good, not great.

again these are just stouts though. haven't tried their other stuff.

was told that wicked weed in asheville makes great stuff too, but their stout isn't 1 of their greatest beer.

also, like the noda stuff. wing got me on their coco loco a bit ago which is a decent option.

I'm dying to try the Alesmith, it's suppossed to be great. I like Evil Twin bees usually so that's likely s good choice. Not sure on the others.I've a cellar full of good stouts that I would trade for the Alesmith. I know last time we talked about trading, I dicked around and we never got to it. Others here can vouch I'm not normally like that though.

Hi 80s,That's funny. I thought that I was the one who was tire kicking :-) I just called them and had them put 2 alesmith speedway stouts aside for me along with the fumapapas, so we are good to go with alesmith. I will be picking them up tomorrow afternoon.

If you were interested in more than 1 trade I have a big bad Baptist and an olde hickory lindley park?

Here's their bottle list as well if you wanted to look it over and pm me.

Perrin 98 Problems but a Hop Ain't One, kind of ridiculous name for such an average IPA.

Actually it's growing on me, I think I'm just biased against Perrin for no real reason.

Crowler of Pseudo Sue. Its been a while since I had this one...unfortunately, Brew Hub either lost the recipe or they just suck at brewing. Tastes nothing like Sue. It's pretty tasty, but it's just not Sue. Not even close.

Well it is Pseudo Sue so they are pretty upfront about that.

Got a $75 gift certificate to a local shop (probably my 3rd or 4th favorite, but nonetheless) and ended up spending $88 on 8 beers :bag: .

I usually don't buy a lot of Mikkeller stuff due to price, but ended up with a 12 oz bottle of Mikkeller Beer Geek Cocoa Shake. Anyone had this?

LolJust stopped at Civil Society Brewing in Jupiter..their Lil Juice IPA is phenomenal. Probably the best Florida IPA I've had. Emerald Showers and Fresh are great too. Super impressed with their hoppy beers.

For Hopcat's (Michigan's biggest craft beer bar) anniversary a bunch of breweries made special beers only available on draft there. Shorts Cats Pajamas is well named. It's a DIPA with guava and blood orange.
