What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (2 Viewers)

started with a St. Bernardus Tripel, then a Aventinus weizenbock. Now to an Ayinger Brau Weisse.  :banned:
Damn. The opposite order of which I would have tried them, but can't argue at all about any of 'em. Great brews, all of 'em.
the Ayinger I have had before (I stick to a two new beer a night policy so I can get a good idea of what I think of them).I'm still quite the n00b at this so I have to ask - what is the thinking behind drinking them in the opposite order?

Beermann's Bourbon Barrel Barleywine is getting a 4.4 in my book. The warmer it gets, the crazier the flavors become. Seriously delicious.
 :pickle: :headbang: :pickle: :headbang: :pickle:  Really good beer, one of if not the best bourboun aged beers that I have ver had.
I'm a bonefied bourbon barrel beer fan, for sure.
I picked up one of these today. A belgian style scotch ale aged in bourbon barrels. Not cheap at 14 dollars for the 750, but I couldn't help myself. I will probably try this tomorrow.
Considering I just bought some Samael's Ale and Mephistopheles' at $8 per 12oz bottle, it isn't horrible.

Cracked the growler of Ithaca Double IPA tonight after the kids decided to drag Dad away from the compuer and his beer last night instead of waking up their sober sleeping Mom. :hot:

This stuff is flat-out scary. The hops (100% NYS grown, baby!) are downright floral in their initial flavor, but after that it's this great blending of powerful honey-toffee malt, solidly citric bitterness, and a really serious warming alcohol with a surprising lack of burn. Amazing aroma - alcohol, citrus hops, and biscuits-dipped-in-honey malt.

This beer is gonna kick my ### hard, and I'm gonna enjoy every minute of it. :banned:

I'd sit on those for a really long time before breaking into them.

I generally go from lowest to highest in alcoholic strength and/or hoppiness and/or maltiness. The idea being that your taste buds will get nuked by something big and you won't be able to taste all of the subtleties in the "smaller" beer after the larger ones. The brewmaster at the brewpub next door to work, who I've seen taste stuff that I can't hope to identify, told me that. Makes sense, if you think about it.And for a n00b, you're definitely nailing some damned fine brews.

Finishing my second pint. This is one exquisite freaking buzz. (looks on BA) 10% ABV. Explains a helluva lot.

thanks. It does make sense. I'll have to remember that in the future.

I have to say that I appreciate all the help, advice and knowledge you guys are giving me (and other noobs). I think for me the information and experience I'm picking up in this is almost as fun as the actual beer itself.

I agree, that does make sense. However, I always try to be careful not to drink my really good beers when I have had a couple of other beers beforehand. My preference is to start off with an intense beer and then switch to a light session beer that I am not as concerned about in regards to taste. Maybe this is the alcoholic speaking.

I do this as well. But then again some of my favorite beers have been that imperial stout at the end of the night.

I have a St. Bernardus and the Allagash staring at me right now. Tough to say no to either of them every time I open the fridge.

DFH Burton Baton. This beer is a trip. IPA? How?

Interesting though, I think I'm a fan.
Totally agree. This isn't a DIPA. More of an American Stong Ale if I had to classify it. I do think that the sweetness of the 90 minute married with the oak aged ale is quite nice. Just not a DIPA.

I think my palate is effed for the evening. Need to dig up some beers that I don't need to rate.
2005 SN Celebration Ale it is
That's quite a beer to be reaching for when your pallete is effed. :banned: I'm finishing this HopDevil and going to bed. Going for a hike with the dog in the morning.

At 6.8% it's on the low end of the alcohol spectrum for beers I drink :P . Big thing is that I don't have to rate it. If I was drinking a beer I hadn't rated, I would have this overwhelming guilt to concentrate and rate it. This way I can simply drink the darn thing.Haven't rated the Hopdevil yet. Its been a while, probably at least 6 months to a year since I last had it.

Went to the Steelhead Brewery tonight. Their Babmbay IPA cask conditioned ale straight from the source is one helluva beer. Never seen it bottled. MaY have to go down there more often.

Wow. So I think Beer Advocate has somehow dropped some of my ratings. I don't know how or why.

Bakes sent me the Wailing Wench and I reviewed and drank it. But the review doesn't exist. But I remember reviewing it.

That just sucks. Searching this thread for a specific word to narrow down a date is like searching for a needle in a haystack.

good luck with that. their deletion policy is random enough that you may never figure out why it got nicked.

I need to do something like this sometime. :banned:
great idea. i'd bet that between the 10-12 of us who post here regularly, we could pull this off.
For sure. I am only missing the Founders Breakfast Stout and Alesmith Speedway Stout out of those.
:hey: I have Speedway (thanks Skylord). I have them all or access to them all except Breakfast Stout and Dark Lord.

That sucks. They had to delete a review of a beer thats hard for me to get. Why couldn't they delete a Sierra Nevada review?

i've got a Dark Lord!
You don't have any of the others? Strange since those pictures made look like you had so much beer on hand.
Dark LordWesty 12

Stone RIS

that's it. that's the list. i lucked in to the Dark Lord via a BA who lives near here.. the Westy 12 i got in an unbalanced trade (to me at least.. i sent New Glarus and got Westy 12, Troegs Nugget Nectar and a 2003 Alaska Smoked Porter in return. guy was raving about how happy he was to get his hands on NG. he "threw in" the Nugget Nectar). and the Stone RIS i got from either Skylord or FatMax. maybe

both since i have 2.

i've got a lot of beer. some i'm trying to keep secret until after my end of the BIF goes out. can't have any surprises being ruined.

Does anybody else find the BA weighting a little odd?

- 20% Appearance

- 20% Smell

- 40% Taste

- 10% Mouthfeel

- 10% Drinkability

The one that I don't get is 20% for appearance. Don't get me wrong, I like a beer that looks good in the glass. But is it really as important as the aroma?

For appearance, you have color (light/dark), clarity (clear/hazy), head/retention, and that's about it.

When I'm smelling a beer, I consider hops (floral, citrus, pine, spice), malt (caramel, bread/toast, nuts, roasted/burnt), yeast (clove, fruity, woody, mineral), alcohol, and possible process/fermentation flaws (buttery, cooked vegetable, bad phenolics).

There's just a great deal more complexity and variation in aroma than there is in appearance. I find myself deliberately scoring beers low on appearance, just because I don't want a beer that looks perfect but has average aroma to outscore one that maybe is a bit hazy, but the aroma is just phenomenal.

Compare it to the weighting used by judges in most major professional and homebrew competitions:

- 6% Appearance

- 24% Smell

- 40% Taste

- 10% Mouthfeel

- 20% Overall impression (~ drinkability)

Anyway, my :2cents: rant for the day.

ETA: I usually use the latter scale initially, and adjust my BA values as needed to get roughly the same number.

noticed that last nite. i lowered the drinkability and mouthfeel scores on a beer by a full point and it only lowered the total score by 0.1

figured that the drinkability should be 20% and appearance 10%. i'm with you man.

Haven't brought this up at BA, though. Don't want to get banned.

I pretty much have decided who I am sending to and what I am sending for BIF II. List is done, now I just have to make sure that I have it when it's time to start up and don't drink it myself. As much fun as it is to receive the box, I can't wait to send out the first BIF II box.

I just want to make sure I start it off with a bang. There are a couple things that might change based on availability at the time, but as it stands right now, it is going to be a very solid start.

I'll do it. I really don't give a #### about those guys. So I'll bring it up if we really want to know. Odds are strong that the ego-centric guys there would just ignore it with nothing further. But if we do want to know, I'll put my login on the line. Not like I've done anything except catalog my Wants and Gots there yet anyway. Let me know...

Fellas,

It's hotter than a mother####er outside. I just got done QUICKLY mowing my neighbor's yard (they're out of town on vacation and trying to sell the house). I think the time has come. I am opening my first Beatification of my life.

This one is the Batch 001. Tip Top was sent the Batch 001-PH1 in case anyone wants the details. I don't have the proper snifter for it, but then again I don't give a #### right now. I'm having it in an imperial pint glass, and that's good enough for me. Check in very soon or forever hold your "piece".

Beatification Update

Update #1, circa 5:16pm

A soft "pop" and the cork comes out. A little whisp of cloud comes out and I smell the beer. There's a little flowery smell, but generally it's beer.

I'm going in.
