What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (6 Viewers)

Went to a little beer store down here in NC. I wanted to go with some stuff I haven't been able to get or local (NC) brews. I guess this is what I'll be trying tonight.

Big Boss
I'll be interested to hear your take on it. A lot of folks around here seem to like it, but I don't remember being that impressed when I tried one. Still probably the best bottled IPA made in NC, which isn't saying much. If you like dark beers with a kick, see if you can find a Highland Tasgall Ale.

I don't know how close you are to Kill Devil Hills, but Chips Wine & Beer Market looks like the best place to find beer in the Outer Banks.
Highland Tasgall Ale.
I loved that stuff. Seems like a quality brewery.
Too bad their IPA sucks. They make a decent Irish red ale (Gaelic Ale) and a pretty good chocolate stout if you can find it. The Tasgall is the best beer they have.
That's where I went. Chip is super nice. He steered me away from one NC beer (which I found out after the fact wasn't rated to well on BA) and led me to the Big Boss.He had several from Highland. I picked the Kashmir IPA. :( Started to get the Gaelic. Going to have to go back to see if they have the Tasgall.

The Tasgall is only sold as a bomber. The IPA isn't undrinkable, it just doesn't have any character and is more like a pale than an IPA.

 Don't recall seeing any bombers from Highland. He did have ceramic bottles from Rougue. Didn't pull the trigger though. I'd have no use for the bottle afterward, so it seemed like an extra $5 or so for a bottle I'd throw out.

Opened up the Alesmith's Speedway Stout and Old Numbskull yesterday.  Great beers.  Moved on to a Sam Smiths Imperial Stout.  Then last night had the Capitol Brewery - Blond Dopplebock from the BOMC 1.  Hog heaven.
jeebus Fro. All those yesterday? How you feeling today?
Its 4 beers. Split the Alesiths and Sam Smiths with my brothers. Less than 12oz of three differnet beers from 1pm to 4pm at Easter Family gathering. Then had the 120z bock at 10:00 pm watching the Sopranos. I feel any of you guys could top that.

Oh I see. I thought those were all to your head. And I thought you drank a bomber of Avery Hogheaven as well :bag: A Hogheaven, a Speedway and an Old Numbskull is a brutal 1-2-3 punch

Indeed. This sounds like a interesting experiment.
Crap. I just checked my local beer forum and it has been here since last week. These specialty beers have a habit of flying off the shelves. I think I am going to have to make a trip out there this evening.
:hot: You'll have to give us a complete review.
I'm about to pop this baby open. I will report back soon. I also got an Imperial Pale from Terrapin Brewing called Rye Squared. Its a double recipe version of their Rye Pale Ale, which is pretty good in its own right. They do seasonals that include an Imperial Red, an Imperial Stour, and an Imperial Pilsner, as well as the first beer I mentioned.

I'd really like to check this one out: Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel

Anyone seen it around?
Just finishing my first glass. Its everything a great Belgian Triple should be, with the twist being that it is hopped like no other Belgian that I have had. Pours a hazy golden yellow with a thick three finger head. Tastes like a regular Belgian Triple with peppery/clove flavors as well as the warming slightly sweet alcohol taste that is aided by the candy sugar used to brew it, but the hop bite takes it where no Triple has gone before. Not as citrusy or hoppy as the West Coast DIPA's, but the overload of Saaz adds a bitter crisp finish that lingers just long enough on your tongue to want to take another sip.Quality beer. Makes me want to brush the dust off the brewing equipment and try to brew my own Belgian hybrid, but using West Coast hops instead.

:drool:Why don't you just tell me about the Westy Yellow Cap you chased it with?

Not as citrusy or hoppy as the West Coast DIPA's, but the overload of Saaz adds a bitter crisp finish that lingers just long enough on your tongue to want to take another sip.Quality beer. Makes me want to brush the dust off the brewing equipment and try to brew my own Belgian hybrid, but using West Coast hops instead.
Nice writeup, Trout. I'll look for it next time I'm at a bigger beer store.

I was wondering if anybody here had had any Terrapin beers. It looks like they can only be found in GA and the Carolinas. They're one of the "local" breweries I plan on checking out for the BIF. I put "local" in quotes because while the company is based in Athens, GA, the beer itself is outsourced to a brewery up north. They have intentions of building their own brewery in Athens one day.Have you had either the Big Hoppy Monster or the Wake-and-Bake stout?

Only by reputation. I've read quite a few reviews on them since either you or someone else was talking about them earlier in this thread.

So far I've like all of their 'Monster Beer Tour' beers. They're not my absolute favorites, but I admire that they are willing to try some new things. I'm aware that they contract brew. Its the nature of the business. Highland contracts some of their beer as well at the exact same place that Terrapin contracts theirs (in Maryland). Highland will be opening a new brewery by the end of the year and they hope to have all of it locally brewed by then. It was a disturbing revelation at first, but having talked to a few brewers, contract brewing is not uncommon. One of my favorite Pale Ales, New RIver Pale Ale, is also conract brewed.

For me tonight is my first Allagash beer to date. I will be trying the Dubbel Reserve. I've also got the triple and thanks to FatMax recently acquired the Four.

I've had the Allagash Tripel, the Cruieux (Oak Aged Triple), and the Interlude (Saison aged in wine barrels). They are a great brewery that is producing good Belgian style ales and also willing to experiment with the Belgian styles in different ways. I've heard good things about the Four.

I really liked the Big Hoppy Monster that you sent to me. It was very sweet and had a nice hop profile. Very nice balance for such a high alcohol beer.

I've been drinking some Ommegang recenty and have been impressed. Another good American brewery that represents the Belgian style.

How's the Interlude? Is it as good as the reviews it receives?

The Three Philophers is one of my favorite beers. I drank one of those beers every weekend for a few months. I'm much better now though.

I think I reviewed it somewhere on page 13. One of the most interesting beers I have ever had. Earthy tones from the Saison and the wild yeast combined with wonderful red wine undertones. Worth the 20 dollars I spent on the bottle. I would buy it again if it were around, but only every so often as it is quite pricey.

Oh thats right, I remember that review. You used almost the same exact words.Let me know if you do see it again...although I think its probably passed me by. Allagash doesn't list it on their website anymore. :(

Next up is the Moose Drool brown ale from Big Sky brewco.

Not expecting much. This is one of those "had to try it once" beers.

Gettin by with a little help from my Friends

Decisions, decisions.....

(I had to leave TWO Dreadnaughts in the pic....just cuz.) :P

Next up, Im gonna pop the top on a Bell's Third Coast Old Ale (4th from left in pic)
What is the beer to the right of the Hopsickle?
Its a monster.Dark Horse's DOUBLE Crooked Tree IPA. 13.60% ABV

I got that and the Bells Third Coast as extras in the trade that netted me the 2 Dreadnaughts. I cant wait to try it, but not tonight. Its gonna have to be my 1st of the night. Probably tomorrow. Ive had their Crooked Tree single IPA on my want list for a while, but was blown away when I got this badboy.

Im going to Michigan for a week in June, and believe me, Im gonna bring back LOTS of MI brews...some to drink, some to trade. Any requests, let me know.
