What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

I'm going to the Denver Winter Brew Fest tonight, which features a bunch of winter seasonal beers from about 50 different breweries. The list of breweries pouring tonight looks pretty solid. Some of the bigger name breweries that I'm looking forward to include:

Deschutes

Elevation

Firestone Walker

Great Divide

Lagunitas

New Belgium

Odell

Oskar Blues

River North

Stone

I haven't seen a beer list posted yet, but I'm hoping that some of these places break out their big barrel-aged imperial stouts for the festival.

One of my favorite local breweries, River North, and my favorite bottle shop in downtown Denver, Mr. B's, collaborated on a beer called B-Side Avarice, which is a Belgian-style imperial stout aged in High West rye whiskey barrels for a year. I'm sitting on the patio in sunny 60-degree Colorado weather enjoying one now. It is pretty phenomenal.

New Belgium Fat Tire. Pretty solid brew, very sessionable. Though at $14 a 6-pack here in Canada, probably not something I'll go back to very often.

Costco had a case of mixed Ballast Point brews for $31.99. I couldn't pass it up. This and Alesmith are the 2 best breweries in San Diego.

Pale Ale, Calico, Big Eye, and of course Sculpin tonight. Love the stuff.

Yesterday's haul: 2 4-packs of Surly Furious

Today's haul: 2 6-packs of Alpha King (bottled 1-20-14), one each of Sculpin, Coffee Bender, Tallgrass Vanilla Buffalo Sweat

Had a SN Celebration to start, an Alpha, now a Sculpin. Want to go Furious and Sucks as these are some of my favorite beers and want to see how they are back to back to back to back.

6-packs of Alpha King are one of the things I miss most about living in Chicago. One of my favorite beer labels of all-time.

Crooked Stave Nightmare on Brett dark sour ale aged in Leopold Bros whiskey barrels - Oh my god, this beer is amazing. Flavors of sour cherries, blackberries, lemons, oakey vanilla, cocoa, and whiskey. One of the best sours I've ever had.

Oskar Blues Ten FIDY imperial stout aged in Maker's Mark barrels (tremendous!)

Great Divide Espresso Oak-Aged Yeti imperial stout

Big Sky Ivan the Terrible imperial stout

Nugget Nectar out:

  • January 6: Tasting room, general store and 8-county home market around Hershey
  • January 20: Pennsylvania
  • February 3: New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware
  • Mid-February: Ohio, Virginia, New York, Massachusetts

I see a nice selection of Ommegang at my local place.. Never tried it.

Any recommendations?

I just keep buying the Brooklyn Brewery Variety 12-pack.

And I've been into Zywiec lately too.

They make some of the best Belgian ales outside of Belgium. 3 Philosophers is wonderful. I've bogarted an entire 750 by myself many times and always keep several in the cellar. Hennepin is also very good.

I've had both plus a couple others I can't think of the name of right now - Hennepin is very drinkable, I order it when I see it on menus, the 3 Philosophers I have brought home, also great.

Still working on it this weekend.

The Pale Ale is not the greatest - it actually tastes like a Pilsner or something to me. The other 3 are outstanding.

Bayou Teche, Miel Sauvage.

New Iberia LA

650 ml bottle poured into a Parish Brewing tulip.

This is my first braggot. Not much carbonation on the pour, but it is a beautiful dark ruby red color. It is translucent and leaves almost no lacing, just a ring of foam around the edge. The smell is sweet, but not like those artificially sweetened beers. A strong honey scent dominates this beer, the whiskey barrel is not so prominent but still present and balances the honey very well. Slick but not sticky on the palate. And again, not too much carbonation but it works well. I usually don't like lightly carbonated beers but this one is the exception... The taste is almost the same as the smell but with a little more of the whiskey barrel shining through. This beer was one of my favorites if not my favorite from Bayou Teche so far. I will definitely get another bottle to save and one to send as an extra on a future trade. Highly recommended...

I'm drinking a pretty nice lineup of beers tonight:

Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Coffee Stout

Crooked Stave Batch 60 dry hopped American wild ale

Victory Hop Ranch imperial IPA

Crooked Stave Nightmare on Brett dark sour ale aged in Leopold Bros. whiskey barrels

After dinner, I think I am going to break out some Evil Twin Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Biscotti Break stout.

Drank mostly IPAs for several years. Calmed down to PBR for quite awhile. Wifey brings home several growlers of IPA tonight out out the blue. Dunno where from ........hammered.

Did I spell all that right?

That's probably because it isn't a pale ale at all. It is a Kolsch. It has been there flagship beer since the start (used to be called yellowtail, but that winery didn't like that), so they kind of backed themselves into a corner with it. They are working on doing a more traditional pale.

Local Irish pub has a $3 draft happy hour 4-7, stopped in for a couple drinks after work yesterday. Turns out they had Hopslam. $3 Hopslams is just too good to be true...but it actually was true and I got pretty tipsy. A couple drinks turned into us roaming around town eating and drinking until midnight.

I used to by it when it was $9.99. I stopped when it went up to $12.99.

I agree. The pale ale wasn't that good. I ended up giving them away.

I hear you but it's one of my favorite beers and I figure that I would spend that $3 on gas going to the brewpub anyway. That's how I rationalize it anyway.

Marianos has Lagunitas Sucks for $8.49 a sixer. Almost bought a case yesterday but my beer fridge is full. I am thinking of going back today and just keeping it in the garage. Actually, one of my crispers is almost empty so....hmm.

Just tried the Sucks for first time tonight, big fan. Was expecting some sort of brown ale, Lagunitas labels/boxes must be created by someone on acid.

Six pack of Sucks @ $8.99 in Milwaukee today. Good value. Hopslam is $16. Had one of each tonight, then pulled a 2010 Bigfoot from the cellar. I think 3F is overpriced across the board.

I drank a lot of LA 31 when I was in NOLA recently.

Zombie dust, Toppling Goliath X-Hops Green Label. While watching Badger Wildfire Hockey replay and making a batch of Chicken Enchiladas for tomorrow night.
