What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

This is as good a thread as any to ask:

Are there any good websites or techniques for locating specific craft beers in my area? I've recently been discovering beers beyond Miller Lite and Yuengling (I know, I know). I've found particular types of beer that I like, particularly kolsch and hefeweizen. What I've done now is to go to the Beer Advocate website and found the top rated beers of those types.

Now, what is the best way to go about locating them? Is there a good website for locating beers? Is the best way to just pick up the phone and call the distributors? I know that their inventories probably change, so keeping track via a website might be near impossible to get a current list. Are distributors willing to/capable of special ordering cases or beer?

You're probably going to have to decide what you're interested in trying and go to their sites to see where they distribute.

I have an awesome liquor store a few miles away that stocks tons of craft beers...anything like that in your area?

Thanks. I tried a few and their websites stated the places local to the brewery that had the beers on tap. Nothing about distribution beyond that.

Beer? In a liquor store? That's crazy talk.

I live in PA. Liquor stores are state owned and do not sell beer. Cases of beer must be purchased from privately owned beer distributors.

Need a roommate? I cook.

Green Flash Double Stout

Sagautuck Neopolitan Stout

Also saw what Bells has on the table for this year. Apparently Larry Bell has become obsessed with clasical music and in honor of The Planets by Gustav Holst, he will be releasing one beer for each piece of the work.

You aren't gong to find a that many American varieties of Hefes or Kolsch. Are there any local breweries/brewpubs nearby? They might tackle that sort of thing. (what part of PA are you in?)

Being in a case county sucks for you. For lots of reasons. So, sorry for that. Move. If you insist on not moving, look up your best local beer places and keep trying ####. Or, if you have lots of disposable income: trade for beer. Pretty easy and also fun if you have the money.

Jumping Cow amber ale. Got this from a Trader Joe's. California brewery. It was solid. Not great, but it was pretty damn cheap ($7 for a sixer).

:gasp:

That's my hometown! I'm 45 minutes away now, but that's certainly a reasonable drive. Only 10 minutes from my parents. I'll have to make a stop next time I go to visit.

Thank you.

I missed this post initially. Too far from me, but I appreciate the info. I have family in NJ. Next time I'm heading that way, I may check this out as a detour.

Had a Black IPA when I was in FL over the weekend (Funky Buddha in Boca) - sex panther, solid name. Pretty good, never tried or even heard of that style of beer before - interesting - worth a taste. Anyone familar with this style and have other recommendations?
Upthread a bit: http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=82676&page=646#entry15546256

Firestone Walker Wookey Jack also very good, in addition to Green Flash. I haven't had Stone, but I would certainly take his word for it.

I like the style for the winter.
Had Lagunitas Nighttime Ale last night. It was pretty good. Still some citrus notes, despite the roastiness.
I have a bomber of this in my fridge. Had it once before and liked it, especially for $4.99. I'll be hanging out at Xfinity Live in Philly tonight, so there will be some Victory going down for sure.

:banned:

I wasn't planning to go hunting for Beer Camp, but saw the 24 at Costco yesterday for $40 so picked one up. Costco is doing a great job with beer these days. About 20 different 750s and 22s, all about 1-3 bucks less than the best price I can get at my bottle shop.
I'm always surprised at the beers Costco has. Good stuff good prices.

Haven't seen the 24 pack of BC at my Costco yet which is surprising.

That place is not bad, but it is only cases and honestly, I probably would not make a special stop for it. If you were really in the area and wanted to check something out, probably The Beer Shoppe in Ardmore is the best bet, though I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way for it.

I have no idea how accurate it is everywhere, but http://www.beermenus.com does this and it works pretty well in NYC.

Family is in town from the east coast, very casual drinkers. Bought a 30 pack of Bud Light for the first time in years. I crack one and the next thing I know it's gone. Unreal how quickly these suckers go down after drinking dank beer exclusively for a few years.

Picked up 2 12-packs of the SN Beer Camp. While they are chilling, time for a Greenbush Dunegras.
Had a few beer camp yesterday. Thought they were fantastic.
They are fantastic. SN is the best at what they do.
Making beer?
Yeah...??? That is what they do.
Ok, I don't think they make the best beer.
There may be better beers in the different styles covered by Sierra Nevada's line, but I doubt there are many breweries that can compete with them on the total picture of quality, cost and coast-to-coast availability. Russian River may make a better IPA than Torpedo, but I'd like to see them put in on grocery store shelves in Iowa at $8 per six pack.

SN does a great job of making high quality affordable beer that is widely distributed. No doubt. They don't make the best beer though.

I actually don't dislike SN's Pale Ale. And that's saying a lot.
You also don't like any of the 12 beers in the Beer Camp Across America. That's 12 different beers.

I'm not sure you like beer.
I'm sure you don't know what you're talking about. Over-hopping everything isn't the be-all and end-all of beer.
You poor thing. Let me guess, you also like your wings extra mild.

I do actually agree with Christo that "over-hopping everything isn't the be-all and end-all of beer". Nothing wrong with an over-the-top super-hopped IPA, but it seems like all of the craft breweries are making (or attempting to make) them these days. A local place opened recently with 8 beers from the outset, and 4 of them were IPAs. I like IPAs as much as the next beer guy, but I could use a little variety here.

Totally agree. It was kind of refreshing going to Germany and not even having hoppy beers as an option. That said, drinking Lagunitas Sucks.

Do you like daisy cutter?
Haven't tried it.
Oh for ####'s sake! Seriously??????? You live in Chicago brohans!
So? I've tried Gossamer, Over Ale, Pony Pilsner and a couple of their seasonals. But I'm in no hurry to try something they describe as " A west coast Pale Ale chock-full of dank, aromatic hops. This one's a screamer, hoard it."
