Thanks man! I need to tweak the recipe and get the IBUs up a bit...its good but needs more bitter. Also I'm gonna up the ABV to 7 to 7.5% next time but for a first brew I'm not complaining.
If you have any crystal malt in that at all get it the #### out. That is the San Diego way, anyway, and I that's how I like it.

I've also had some real nice IPAs that used a pilsner malt as a base. My favorite homebrew IPA was a Marris Otter base. Fun to play with that side of the recipe.

 
Gotta work later so I gotta stop after this beer, but I HAD to have one...

Maine Beer Company's Lunch IPA. Excellent beer, very tasty. Something about the water in the North East makes for some silky smooth beer. The mouth feel reminds me of Heady Topper - no harshness at all, but plenty of hoppiness and a soft feel. I could crush several of these.

I'm doing extract brews until I get a better feel for it...I used a little 20L crystal steeping grains...but I'm gonna move to partial mash pretty soon and all grain will follow soon after I'm sure.I'm sure if someone else tasted it they might say its OK, but to me its amazing since I came up with the recipe myself and executed it without a hitch from boil to bottle...Lol...its definitely got room for improvement though.

 
That's a good looking beer and congrats on your first brew turning out well. If you used a base malt extract, there's probably some percentage of crystal in there. Don't mind Sebowski and his obsession against crystal malt. I don't use much of it myself, but there are a ton of good American and British ales out there (including many good one brewed in Californis) that use crystal.

So I couldn't wait any longer...had to try my first home brew after 2 weeks in the bottle (Citra IPA)...holy crap its better than I expected!!

Poured a hazy amber with a nice head...it finished a bit darker than I was going for, but no big deal...smells absolutely delicious...a Citra bomb for sure. Tastes like it smells...pure Citra with a nice sweetness, and pretty good lacing as I drink it. It still needs a week or so to round out, as its still a bit green, but hot damn this beer is pretty close to what I was going for. I'm gonna tweak the recipe a bit to give it more IBUs but for a first brew I couldn't be happier!

Wingnut just motivated me to try my rye ipa that I kegged a little over a week ago. I ended up brewing this one when the weather was really hot in Chicago and the ambient temperature on the "fermentor" got up to 74 so I had to battle getting the temps down.

Well...some off flavors which I kind of expected from a high fermentation but only a little. It's really only on the nose and the beer itself tastes pretty solid nonetheless. So I am pleased it's not a drain pour and is actually pretty solid. The better news is that I finally understand the quality of controlling fermentation. I mean I kind of knew, but I didn't know that temperature was so key until I did some research when the temps hit so high on this one. So a great learning experience and the wife ok'd me getting a freezer I can turn into a fermentation chamber.

Looking forward to my next IPA brew already (with nelson, topaz, jade and galaxy).

Ska Brewing Modus Hoperandi IPA. I haven't had a piney beer in a while, its not bad! Has a Sierra Nevada feel to it, which can't be a bad thing.

Boulevard Hibiscus Gose...its no Westbrook or Rapp, but its pretty damn good and I put it not far behind those 2 as far as Goses I've tried.

I love me a good sour beer!

That's the worst thing about most DIPAs IMO...too damn much sweet. If I could find a 9+ ABV DIPA that was hop forward with minimal malt sweetness I'd probably have a new favorite beer.That reason alone is why I'd rather drink IPAs/APAs over DIPAs 9 times out of 10.

Hahahaha...I've hardly mastered anything yet...gotta master the Citra IPA first.The problem with higher ABV beers is you need more fermentable sugar for more alcohol...not sure how one would go about making a high ABV beer minus the sweetness.

You can add sucrose (table sugar) or belgian candy sugar, which is 100% fermentable and adds abv without leaving any residual sweetness. Some of my friends routinely add sucrose to their apa's and ipa's to give them a boozy bump while keeping it dry. High abv beers are tricky at home, hit or miss imo.

I have an 11.5% belgian strong golden that turned out decent, but I really have to be in the right mood to drink one. I bottled about 4 gallons of it over two years ago, and still probably have half that batch in my cellar. No sweetness at all, very hoppy, but very very harsh. Almost all pilsner malt, a couple pounds of sugar, and ton of noble hops. After chilling, I racked it on top of a huge Wyeast Belgian Ardennes yeast cake my neighbor had in a carboy from a batch he had transferred to secondary that morning. Massive ferment brought it all the way down to about 1.005. Definitely not what I was going for, undrinkable for the first year or so, but getting better. There's a good story behind that beer - it was completely unplanned. I decided I wasn't going to work one beautiful spring Friday, stopped at the brew store and made up a recipe on the spot, spent the day in my garage drinking and brewing. Turned into a pretty fun party and I got a decent, very strange beer out of it in the end.

Looking up some beers after you posted, I realize that all my favorites are in the 8s. My favorite beers are double IPAs, but I agree that many get too sweet. I may have to watch this threshold closely.

They just came in today. So I bought 3 4 packs. Probably my last "must find" beer until Alpha Klaus comes out. That will be a case purchase from the brewery.

Who am I kidding...I will probably have another mission next weekend.
They hit earlier out by me but will also be hunting for Alpha Klaus when it's released.

 
Having a Foothills Jade IPA (7.4%). A crystal clear hop bomb with a dry finish. I like it.

Recently, as I start discovering new beers, I've been referencing Beer Advocate to get the ratings on beers I stumble across. For grins, I decided to check out MGD on Beer Advocate.

I :lmao: at some of the reviews. "The pour was a horrible clear...", "There was no significant head when poured into a pilsner glass...", "The aroma was terrible..."

:lmao: It's Miller Genuine Draft, for God's sake. Bang it back from the bottle/can, then crack the next one.

 
Went with a Maine Beer Co Peeper Ale (APA).

Bottled almost 2 months ago so I'm sure its lost a bit of its bite, but its still pretty good.

 
Troegs Master of Pumpkins. Not a huge fan of pumpkin beers, but this one is pretty good.

ETA: Just discovered that my (soon-to-be-ex-) dog sitter drank the Bell's Porter I had in the fridge.
