What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

I had some amazing stuff at the Crooked Stave tap room last night:

Raspberry Origins sour burgundy ale aged in oak barrels with raspberries

Mama Bear Cherry Pie sour burdundy ale aged in oak barrels with sour cherries

Sentience sour quadrupel

Nightmare on Brett sour dark ale aged in whiskey barrels

St. Bretta (Autumn) witbier with blood oranges

Crooked Stave consistently impresses me with the innovative wild/sour ales that they are doing.

Saw a couple bottles of their stuff when I was in Charlotte, but at $15 (for a 500ml IIRC) was a bit steep, so I passed.I'm heading on the road to Alabama in a bit, gonna stop into Proof Brewing in Tallahassee while Im passing by to try some of their stuff...I hear their Mango Wit and Citra Pale Ale are pretty good. They don't have a tap list online so I'm hoping they have a few good limited beers on, I'm taking a few empty growlers just in case.

At Proof in Tallahassee...did a quick flight of Grapefruit Guru IPA, In Session Pale Ale, Mango Wit, and Kissing Giants Gose.

All pretty good, the Gose is outstanding, as is the Grapefruit IPA. The Mango Wit was good, and the Pale Ale was my least favorite (not enough Citra).

Cool place though, in Railroad Square, but getting here was a nightmare with traffic. Damn Seminoles everywhere.

Lol. Easy on us Seminoles! When I was there the only good place for craft beer was Leon Pub. Of course back then I mostly stuck to PBR though.

Cornholed with former FBG and 41-time poster in this thread Organized Chaos tonight. Probably tomorrow too.

Enjoying a NoDa Hop Drop just outside of Mobile, Alabama in a motel...heading back to FL tomorrow, and may stop in to Swamp Head brewing in Gainesville...they've got some interesting stuff right now for sale in 750mls.

Jai Alai.

Are we separating the men from the boys here? This thread has slowed down the last couple of nights...

Of course, most of you probably have lives, families, and regular jobs. And sissy livers.

Lol not knocking Seminoles...its just there are college kids everywhere around the square. In hindsight it was probably a good move wearing my maroon Cigar City shirt instead of my almost Gator-blue Rapp shirt in Tally.

I transferred there after two years at App State, so it took me a bit to catch the bug. Plus, I like to stir the pot, so, I wore a thrift store Gator shirt to class every once on a while. Really pissed off the 2 dudes in my Spanish class one semester.

I'd love to hear a report on Leon Pub if you pass back through though.

Had some harvest ale last night.

Found a 2014 surly darkness but I'll sit on that for a little bit. Won black Tuesday lottery. I buy Friday.

Liberty Street Barbers Garden Harvest Ale- really well done. Heady Topper (first time) and Big Gruesome Choc Peanut Butter Stout from Spring House.

Anyone ever had Big Bad Baptist Stout? I think I am going to be able to get a bottle tomorrow.

Yeah, I am a fan of Epic's Big Bad Baptist. The taste is usually very coffee forward, and Epic uses high quality locally sourced coffee, which is nice. I think it is very drinkable for its high ABV. I just don't think it has enough barrel character to put it in the top tier of barrel-aged imperial stouts.

Heady was great. I'm not sure it blows away all other DIPAs, but it's elite. Reminded me of Mars. The Big Gruesome is one of the best smelling beers I have ever had. Holy tag-a-long cookie!

Sounds about right. Trying to decide if I want to be good and do some work or hit the Spiteful.

Heady didn't remind me of Mars at all...much easier to drink. I struggle to finish a Mars while Heady was really smooth with no burn (8% vs 10% thoug) Heady drank more like an IPA, Mars like a barley wine IMO. I just didn't get a lot of hops from Heady, which is why I found it a bit disappointing, but at least it wasn't cloyingly sweet. If given a choice I'd take Hop Drop over Heady...but that's just me.Stopped at Swamp Head brewery in Gainesville earlier, had a flight of Big Nose IPA, Hoe Hoe Hoe Winter Wit, Stump Knocker APA, Midnight Oil Stout, Wild Night Honey Cream Ale...aso tried the Saison du Swamp and a Fresh Hop IPA. Most were underwhelming but the stout and saison were good. Took a growler of Midnight Oil home as well as a 750 of Blueberry Cottonmouth, a blueberry Wit.

Now having a home brewed Citra IPA.

I didn't find Mars harsh at all. When I have done taste tests with multiple IPAs and DIPAs against each other, I found it a lot easier to compare qualities. Alone, I find it a bit more challenging. I'm not sure why it reminded me of Mars but I had that thought and my friend said it so maybe there is something to it or we are both nuts. I drank my Mars all within the first 2-3 weeks of release but don't know the production date on the HT.

Hmmmm...I drank 3 Headys on 3 separate occasions, and 3 Mars on 3 separate occasions...no similarities at all to me.

Weird how different people get different tastes/nuances in beer.

Its all part of the fun of trying new ones though!

Eta: I'm pretty sure my Heady was about 2 weeks old, the Mars were about 6 weeks old.

In my descriptions of them, there are little similarities. However, my initial gut reaction was linking them. Who knows, we all drink a lot of IPAs. There is a lot of blurring that goes on with it all.

Just tried my Dead Ringer IPA that I experimented with by carbing with fizz drops...ugh, horrible. Glad I only made a 1 gallon batch. My Citra IPA is ten times better.

I still think that the best DIPAs I have had recently are Permanent Funeral and Pure Hoppiness.
Best I've had recently are Unicorn Hits Rock Bottom and Lawsons Sip of Sunshine.Just went and looked at my ratings on BA, my highest rated DIPAs are in order:

1. Dreadnaught/Pure Hoppiness (had them both in '06)

2. Pipeworks Uni hits Rock Bottom/Lawsons Sip of Sunshine

3. Toppling Goliaths Sosus/Wicked Weeds Freak of Nature

4. Sone Ruination (which I rated in '06 and should probably revisit)

Have to agree with Ilov80s here. I didn't find Mars harsh at all. I think what makes Heady so good is that it has layers of hoppy goodness instead of going scorched earth with the hops. There's a lot of balance there.

And I know people clamor for super fresh Heady but I think the can does a good job in preserving the flavor. Maybe it's just me but give me canned all day.

Yeah I can see that. I didnt think Mars was harsh, it just reminded me of a barley wine, which is probably my least favorite style, which is what made it so hard for me to drink. I still have 3 in my fridge and I don't see me drinking them any time soon...I'll probably throw them in as extras in trades.I also prefer cans to bottles every time.

Unicorn rock bottom vs permanent funeral vs citra Ninja death match? (It would be me feeling like death the next day I think)
Just edited my above post to clear the fact that Uni hits Rock Bottom and Sip of Sunshine are #3 and 4 in my DIPA ratings...the rest listed come after those.

Gotcha. I just have all in the fridge and can make for some citra fun. Until the next morning anyway.
Yeah I'd only wanna do that if I had someone to split the bottles with.

My updated rankings of DIPAs. 2 way ties in the first 3 slots, but I really should revisit the ones I rated 8 years ago. I also need to trade for another Sip of Sunshine, its so good.

I'm with Wing. I thought Mars was too malty. I can see the barley wine comparison. Just had it the once though.
