What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (1 Viewer)

I could throw some real competition when it comes to beer inventory right now, but I can't say what I have.  Between buying a sixer of everyting I sent out in the BIF, and getting some beer from Tip Top, I have plenty.

I just had a Moylan's Kiltlifter.  Solid beer.  Not my favorite style, but they do a good job with it.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I've got a pretty crazy inventory right now too, but I am far too lazy to go posting it. And I don't have my laptop here and I don't plan on running back and forth between fridges and computer.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
GB having my beer fridge and boxes in my rumpus room, along with my laptop. Rumpus. I like that word, if it is in fact a word.Had I posted my inventory a few days ago it would have been a bit bigger, but I just sent out a few trades...

Of all the beers in my house at any given time, only about 60-70% are mine - the rest are trade bait.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Everything I listed is all mine to drink :banned: . I do have a couple bottles of Double Sawtooth that are going out in trades soon.

I wish I woulda chilled the Stone Smoked Porter for tonight....Whats your take on it?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Despite what wine boy above thinks, it's a very good brew. It isn't as smoked as some (like Alaskan Smoked Porter), but it is a nice beer. Good sipping beer. One of my top 20 favorites.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
:lmao: Good to hear. Believe it or not, this will be my 1st smoked beer. Yall gotta remember, Im pretty much a craft rookie compared to all you seasoned vets. Only been in the craft game for about 14 months.....I think Im over 200 new beers in that time though, and my palate developed hella fast. GB making up for lost time

Apparently in the beer thread personal preference is to be mocked rather than accepted. And they say the wine guys are snobs. ;)
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Trust me, we can be every bit as condescending as wine drinkers. :D

The only smoked beer I have ever had was Rogue Smoke at the Real Ale Festival last time they had it in Chicago. Tasted like smoked fish, which isn't what I am looking for in a beer. It is the reason I have never had another smoked beer.

 I can see how that would turn you off to the style, but you gotta think that was a fluke.

I hope so, but I haven't risked trying it again yet. Damn I wish they would have another Real Ale Festival. That thing rocked. 300 casks and a ton of bottled beers. What a day.

I've only had about ten now, but the best ever was the Highland Tasgall brewed in Asheville NC that I got from Kilgore. I just had a Moylan's Kiltlifter, and while good, they go a little over the top trying to represent the style.

 You need to stop in this thread more often!!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I'll be around. Been branching out into more beer lately. Going to have to read this thread from the beginning to get some suggestions. I really like some of the belgian/belgian style ales I've had lately

You're in the right place. Any one of us could point you in the right direction regarding Belgians, depending on your personal taste.

Are any of you familiar with Snoqualmie beers?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Never heard of it. Checking on BA, it doesn't look to be very widely distributed. Sucks, because they have been well rated.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
They're really small, and somewhat difficult to find here - and I'm less than 20 miles from the brewery. Cool place though - you can go and taste beer/ask questions with the owner/operator/beermaker.Doesn't hurt that their beer is exceptional. Their porter and their IPA are among the best I've ever had.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Uh-oh...I smell a new regular in this thread..... :welcome:

Funny you mention that - I've got a barleywine in my fridge, and I've never had one before. I hear tell it's kind of sweet, which doesn't make me jump up and down and do the Tiger fist-pump, but I'd never had one so I figured I ought to try it.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Whaddya got?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Boundary Bay - little brewery up in Shick! town right next to the canadian border. Don't do much bottling at all, so unless you're from around here you probably haven't had any.Their beer is good. Not world class I just spooged my pants good, but I wouldn't be embarassed to send any of you their beer.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Was that an offer?!?!?! ;)

At least I have a good reputation from trades and BIF around here.

I go up to Bellingham once a month or so during the summer.  If you want me to pick some up, I'd be happy to fire it out.  Along with some Snoqualmie, if you're so inclined.

By the way, did you guys know that it's actually illegal to ship alcohol from private party to private party?  Least that's what the guy at my wine shop says.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Ship? Who ships?? Ive never shipped. Anyone else here ship?? I dont think anyone here ships.

Who's shipping alcohol? We are all trading snow globes. ;)

Drake's Expedition Ale:

Verdict: Tasty brew!!!!

Not much aroma for me, but I just got done with a Sleighor DIPA, so maybe my smell is hit right now..

But the taste....YUM. Kinda got a sweet toffee/coffee/roasted thing going on up front, with a nice hop bitterness in the finish. This I could make a habit of drinking. Very different, very nice. Smoth as hell. Going down WAYYYY to fast. Im gonna have to save the otehr one for another day so I can have it as my 1st beer of the night...Sleighor may have rendered my tastebuds useless....but as far as I can tell, this ones a winner.

Thanks, Fro. Nice choice for something different.

So funny, thats what I tell the lady at UPS too.

Well tonight at the Deschutes tasting I had the following:

Cask conditioned Black Butte porter

Cask conditioned Mirror Pond pale ale

Cinder Cone red

Bachelor ESB

Obsidian stout

Inversion IPA

Buzzsaw brown

Broken Top Bock.

They are all so so  I think I am just totally spoiled and expect utter perfection. I'd had most of them but even the new ones didn't excite me.

BUT...something else they just got in at the store did turn my head...the Lagunitas 12th Anniversary Undercover Investigation on Shut-Down Ale. Per the bottle a 9.9% bitter. I'll be breaking into this pup tomorrow.

I mean, who makes bitters? Seriously!

The Red, ESB, Stout, and IPA are good. The Porter is slightly better than good, and the Mirror Pond is fantastic, in this man's opinion. I haven't had the brown or the bock.

Well, you would have liked both cask conditioned versions. My favorite was the bock, which they don't sell in southern cali (only this special arrangement). But I bought a 22oz of the bock and a sixer of the stout to help the cause.

One thing that sucks about being in MN is that breweries can't sell directly to the public. It all has to go through a distributor.

Might be the same here. The beer store hosting the event bought the beer then sold it to us. Don't know how they specifically got the beer, but I didn't buy it straight from the brewers.I would like to learn more about the distributions laws though.

Here's something interesting....they credit New Belgium's Fat Tire for opening Southern California to craft brewing

Apparently Fat Tire has set land speed records in sales in Southern California. Not from me, I have bought one bottle in my life.

I would credit Stone for opening up craft brewing to Southern California, not New Belgium. For I suppose the sales speak for them selves...

Thats crazy. It was happening all around me and I had no idea. Two new New Belgiums just showed up at the store, the black ale and summer ale which I'll need to pick up and try. Gotta try it once.

Robert the Bruce

There's a couple from Belhaven

Sam Adams makes a good Scotch Ale, but it's only available in the "Brewmasters Collection" :( It's probably the best beer they make that's widely available.

Seriously!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The Red, ESB, Stout, and IPA are good. The Porter is slightly better than good, and the Mirror Pond is fantastic, in this man's opinion. I haven't had the brown or the bock.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well, you would have liked both cask conditioned versions. My favorite was the bock, which they don't sell in southern cali (only this special arrangement). But I bought a 22oz of the bock and a sixer of the stout to help the cause.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
You can't get Obsidian Stout in Southern California?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Not until about two months ago. I bought beer at the event to try and spur future events...make it seem like a sucess

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Next, try a few scotch ales. They are a developed taste, but very good once you get the hang of them.
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Recommendations?
<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
The one's I've tried and liked:Old Chub   expensive though

Robert the Bruce

There's a couple from Belhaven

Sam Adams makes a good Scotch Ale, but it's only available in the "Brewmasters Collection" :( It's probably the best beer they make that's widely available.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Alesmith's scotch is fantastic. For the most part, scotch ales are a pretty small market

Don't tell the wine guys, ok?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>
See, I wouldn't go and do a thing like that. :D I have had the Snoqualmie porter, but it was a few years ago and I don't remember it as being that good. The brewery is pretty close to where the train runs, correct? I will have to swing back by there when I am up in July.
