What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (3 Viewers)

I could throw some real competition when it comes to beer inventory right now, but I can't say what I have.  Between buying a sixer of everyting I sent out in the BIF, and getting some beer from Tip Top, I have plenty.

I just had a Moylan's Kiltlifter.  Solid beer.  Not my favorite style, but they do a good job with it.

I've got a pretty crazy inventory right now too, but I am far too lazy to go posting it. And I don't have my laptop here and I don't plan on running back and forth between fridges and computer.

Of all the beers in my house at any given time, only about 60-70% are mine - the rest are trade bait.

The only smoked beer I have ever had was Rogue Smoke at the Real Ale Festival last time they had it in Chicago. Tasted like smoked fish, which isn't what I am looking for in a beer. It is the reason I have never had another smoked beer.

I've only had about ten now, but the best ever was the Highland Tasgall brewed in Asheville NC that I got from Kilgore. I just had a Moylan's Kiltlifter, and while good, they go a little over the top trying to represent the style.

Boundary Bay - little brewery up in Shick! town right next to the canadian border. Don't do much bottling at all, so unless you're from around here you probably haven't had any.Their beer is good. Not world class I just spooged my pants good, but I wouldn't be embarassed to send any of you their beer.

Drake's Expedition Ale:

Verdict: Tasty brew!!!!

Not much aroma for me, but I just got done with a Sleighor DIPA, so maybe my smell is hit right now..

But the taste....YUM. Kinda got a sweet toffee/coffee/roasted thing going on up front, with a nice hop bitterness in the finish. This I could make a habit of drinking. Very different, very nice. Smoth as hell. Going down WAYYYY to fast. Im gonna have to save the otehr one for another day so I can have it as my 1st beer of the night...Sleighor may have rendered my tastebuds useless....but as far as I can tell, this ones a winner.

Cinder Cone red

Bachelor ESB

Obsidian stout

Inversion IPA

Buzzsaw brown

They are all so so I think I am just totally spoiled and expect utter perfection. I'd had most of them but even the new ones didn't excite me.

BUT...something else they just got in at the store did turn my head...the Lagunitas 12th Anniversary Undercover Investigation on Shut-Down Ale. Per the bottle a 9.9% bitter. I'll be breaking into this pup tomorrow.

One thing that sucks about being in MN is that breweries can't sell directly to the public. It all has to go through a distributor.

The Red, ESB, Stout, and IPA are good. The Porter is slightly better than good, and the Mirror Pond is fantastic, in this man's opinion. I haven't had the brown or the bock.

Well, you would have liked both cask conditioned versions. My favorite was the bock, which they don't sell in southern cali (only this special arrangement). But I bought a 22oz of the bock and a sixer of the stout to help the cause.

One thing that sucks about being in MN is that breweries can't sell directly to the public. It all has to go through a distributor.

Might be the same here. The beer store hosting the event bought the beer then sold it to us. Don't know how they specifically got the beer, but I didn't buy it straight from the brewers.I would like to learn more about the distributions laws though.

Here's something interesting....they credit New Belgium's Fat Tire for opening Southern California to craft brewing

Apparently Fat Tire has set land speed records in sales in Southern California. Not from me, I have bought one bottle in my life.

I would credit Stone for opening up craft brewing to Southern California, not New Belgium. For I suppose the sales speak for them selves...

They're really small, and somewhat difficult to find here - and I'm less than 20 miles from the brewery. Cool place though - you can go and taste beer/ask questions with the owner/operator/beermaker.Doesn't hurt that their beer is exceptional. Their porter and their IPA are among the best I've ever had.

Thats crazy. It was happening all around me and I had no idea. Two new New Belgiums just showed up at the store, the black ale and summer ale which I'll need to pick up and try. Gotta try it once.

I wish I woulda chilled the Stone Smoked Porter for tonight....Whats your take on it?

Despite what wine boy above thinks, it's a very good brew. It isn't as smoked as some (like Alaskan Smoked Porter), but it is a nice beer. Good sipping beer. One of my top 20 favorites.

Good to hear. Believe it or not, this will be my 1st smoked beer. Yall gotta remember, Im pretty much a craft rookie compared to all you seasoned vets. Only been in the craft game for about 14 months.....I think Im over 200 new beers in that time though, and my palate developed hella fast. GB making up for lost time

Next, try a few scotch ales. They are a developed taste, but very good once you get the hang of them.

Sam Adams makes a good Scotch Ale, but it's only available in the "Brewmasters Collection" :( It's probably the best beer they make that's widely available.

Well tonight at the Deschutes tasting I had the following:

Buzzsaw brown

They are all so so  I think I am just totally spoiled and expect utter perfection. I'd had most of them but even the new ones didn't excite me.

BUT...something else they just got in at the store did turn my head...the Lagunitas 12th Anniversary Undercover Investigation on Shut-Down Ale.  Per the bottle a 9.9% bitter.  I'll be breaking into this pup tomorrow. 

I mean, who makes bitters?  Seriously!

Alesmith's scotch is fantastic. For the most part, scotch ales are a pretty small market

See, I wouldn't go and do a thing like that. I have had the Snoqualmie porter, but it was a few years ago and I don't remember it as being that good. The brewery is pretty close to where the train runs, correct? I will have to swing back by there when I am up in July.
