after the Dead Guy, i pick up whatever Rogue i can find more or less... probably have 4 different bombers in my fridge right now.

yup. haven't tried it though.. only drink on the weekends. and not always both nights. so i haven't gotten to that one yet.but, yeah, i got a bottle in Milwaukee... then last nite saw a row of them at my local when i picked up beer for Skylord. :wall:

Cleaned out my box. Not sure, I've never had the beer. I see it all the time, but never picked any up for whatever reason. Skylord said that he lived off of the stuff in college. He'll probably know.

Humboldt brewing company no longer exists...its now called Nectar Ales. They were bought about by the company that also owns Firestone. I believe they now own Mendocino and quite a few others as well.Red Nectar is their flag ship beer, but I've heard that the recipe has changed. They also make a really nice oatmeal stout (or used to :( ). Try the nectar, it used to be very good

 
More on the "recipe changing" comment. One of the guys from Deschutes used to work for Mendocino and I was drilling him about them changing their recipe (Redtail does NOT taste like the beer I grew up on). He said they didn't change the recipe, but upgraded the facility and had to move to "blending".

When you grow as a brewery, you have to start purchasing your ingredients from new suppliers who can support your bulk needs. When this happens the quality of the ingredients is bound to change, for better or for worse. To keep the beers consistent, they make many batches then blend the batches together, to average them out.

I found that interesting. Still didn't make me feel any better. My biggest beef with Mendocino is when the Frolic Shipwreck went from a gorgeous cloudy mystery beer into a pristine common red. Huh, I can't find Frolic on RB or BA....am I really that old?

Tried the Eel River Brewing Company - Certified Organic IPA

Decent Beer. Was not the hug hop bomb you see from other California Breweries. It is good in its own right. Seems like it would be a good session beer and hold its 7%ABV very weel.

 
Any opinions on Bridgeport's ESB and IPA, which are both available here in Texas for around $7.00 a sixer?

I tried the ESB and it was a bit malty for my taste. I'm wondering what the word is on their IPA.

Decent Beer.  Was not the hug hop bomb you see from other California Breweries.  It is good in its own right.  Seems like it would be a good session beer and hold its 7%ABV very weel.

I've seen the Eel River around, but have been trying to avoid organic beers. Butte Creek makes some organic stuff that tastes like dog ****. Maybe I'll give the Eel a try.

Their IPA is decent, though not great. It doesn't have a big, complex hop profile like some others in the class, but it is an easy drinker. Haven't sample their ESB, so I can't really comment.

I tried the Butte Creek organic IPA a while back and it wasnt bad. Not great, but not bad. I only had a single bottle, so maybe I drank it too fast....I gave it a 3.75 in my review.

The ESB is decent, not as bitter as you might expect from the class and a little malty as you say (which I liked). The IPA is a good basic one, not terribly complex like some others, but you could do worse.

how were both of these?grabbed a bomber of the Rogue Stout over the weekend.. can't wait to sip it.

The stout is really roasty, and a bit hoppy. Has a coffee flavor to it that I'm not sure if is from coffee or just the roasted malt.The pale isn't bad, isn't great. They use a very woody-tasting yeast that I think dries out the finish and detracts a bit from the hop flavor. But quite drinkable.

Kinda threw me, especially since ESB = Extra Special Bitter. I guess I expected a little more hoppiness out of it.I'll have to give the IPA a try. Right now I'm partial to Saint Arnold's Elyssia (local brew) so we'll see how it stacks up.

Errrr, umm, tell us more.Myself, I'm having a Victory Hop Devil.

A side story, I was at my local beer store and I inquired about Fantome which I haven't seen much of around here. He tells me that they are having problems with the distributor but he has some Fantome Hiver that he had stashed away. I'm going to drink that tomorrow when I am sober.

Well, I cracked it tonight after mowing the lawn. It's a saison, but not like any I have had before. This one has a lot more malt character than a regular saison. Fruity, yeasty, with a hint of vanilla. The malt taste is fantastic, and it has the typical earthiness of a belgain farmhouse ale. Quite tasty. I'm saving the last glass for the Thai takeout I am about to go pick up.
 
Southampton IPA. I like this beer. Not overly hoppy like some AIPA's, but pretty well balanced and very drinkable.

 
just had my first La Fin Du Monde. I've got a sinus infection (along with pink eye :hot: ), so my taste is a little muted. If I was clear, I think the alcohol may be a little overpowering.

I'll have to buy some more to drink when I'm healthy.

Yes, buy some more. It is good. The alcohol content is kind of high (9%), but not overpowering.
 
Started with an Old Musty barleywine at Evans/Albany Pump Station - smoooooooooooooooooth with all kinds of cool maltiness. Not a hophead's barleywine yet all the better for it. George (brewer) is hitting on all cylinders right now. It's been on for 3 weeks and it's just rounding into form. Also found out that the Wit is going to be ready in 2-3 weeks. The brewmaster always plays around with the recipe - and always manages to nail an impeccable summer refresher. His hefeweiss is on as well - he used a little Weyermann smoked malt in it which really deepens the character of this brew. If they bottled I'd be sending brews out right left and center. If anyone ever hits the Albany area, let me know - first round there is on me. Stellar brewpub.

Followed that up with a couple of pints of John Brown's Pale Ale from a growler filled at the Great Adirondack Brewing Co. in Lake Placid. A 5.4% APA should not have this much balance and flavor. Helluva beer. :thumbup:

Does malt extract go bad? I have a bag and can that have been around for a few years. Planned on making one gallon batches with them and never did.

Whats the best way to use herbs, specifically mint? I'd like a recognizable mint flavor with out being over bearing.

I was just on briefly last night - spotty/slow wi-fi at the hotel, and a belly full of burnt ends from Arthur Bryant's had me kinda sleepy.Anyway, the dry malt should be fine, assuming it's still dry. The syrup I've heard will darken some with age, but should also make decent beer - just may not be the color you're expecting. I wouldn't expect any other problems.

For herbs, you definitely want to minimize (actually avoid) boiling, so you could drop them in after you finish the boil. That will keep volatiles from being driven off with steam. You could even try to "dry hop" with them - put them in the fermenter after fermentation is mostly complete.

Another technique I've heard if is mixing the herbs with a small amount of vodka, letting it soak for a few days, and then adding the liquid to the beer.

I haven't actually brewed with herbs, so I can't say which of these would work best. What are you thinking for the mint beer? I kicked around the idea of a chocolate-mint stout once, but never brewed it.

I'm thinking I want to do something along the lines of Gouden Carolus Noël. A big, dark, Belgian ale with a touch of mint. I'd like to say complex but my brewing skills are pretty rusty :bag:

Yep, it was so good that I asked Fro to send another one in our trade. He's also sending the Reaper Ale Sleighor DIPA, which is supposed to be super hoppy. Trying to find one that is too hoppy, but it hasn't happened yet.

Yep, it was so good that I asked Fro to send another one in our trade. He's also sending the Reaper Ale Sleighor DIPA, which is supposed to be super hoppy. Trying to find one that is too hoppy, but it hasn't happened yet.

What makes the Reaper's hops stand out is that there is nothing to disguise or balance them. Plenty of other beers, like Ruination, are as well hopped. They just don't kick you in the face like Reaper does.

Skylord: Uhhh, they take a percentage off the top. 10%...so people jack up the pricing of shipping to cover costs.

UPS Lady: And how much did you charge this buyer on shipping?

Skylord: Me? Oh, um...25$...

UPS Lady: That was good, this package only cost you $18!

Skylord: Yeah, thanks.

UPS Lady: Your snow globes and statuettes are valued under $100?

UPS Lady: $25 is a lot to pay for shipping for items under $100. How much do you sell the snow globes and statuettes for?

You aren't too far off when you figure in Ebay and Paypal fees. I do a ton of Ebay, so me being there is not unusual at all. In fact, at the Post Office, they don't even ask me the whole Hazardous, Liquid, etc question any more.
