What kind of beer is everyone drinking tonight? (3 Viewers)

Had my first St. Bernardus ABT 12 on Friday night. Yummy. :banned:

Followed that up with a few Dog Fish Head 60 minute IPAs.

Westvleteren Abt 12 vs St. Bernardus Abt 12

I'll focus most all of the review on the Westy. You all know the Bernardus so I won't go into tasting notes.

Appearance: Here we go. Head died quickly. Slight remnant holding on around edge of glass. Lots of sediment..HEAVY with sediment. Toffee colored, raw sienna.

Smell: Aroma slightly sour like apple juice. Candi sugar, raisins. Caramel apple.

Taste: Oh my god, where to begin. There are far too many flavors happening to even try to isolate one. Bit overwhelming in the best way possible.

Maple sweetness hits the tip of the tongue immediately before the caramel apple flavors wash over the palate. Lots of toffee and dried fruits. A slight malty roastedness lingers after the swallow...coffee undertones towards the back of the tongue with a minute sourness in the middle of the tongue. Holy crap.

Mouthfeel: Thick texture. Its almost like they brewed the beer then removed actual "liquid" out to condense flavor and mouth feel.

Drinkability: It was everything I thought it would be. If the head retention was better we'd be looking at a 5.0. Instead I give this bottle a 4.8

Tasting the Bernardus next to the Westy was a mistake. All it did was show the limitations and weaknesses of the Bernardus, which I didn't know it had. But when I put them side by side, it was clear as day. Not even close, not even in the same ball park. These aren't anywhere on the same level. But the Bernardus is a great beer, is the Westy really that good?

YES.

Stop at nothing to get this beer.

Today I found Moylander's DIPA

ON TAP IN BIG SUR!!!!!!

:happydance:
I love me a dark IPA. Nice roasted profile to go along with a hoppiness that can knock your teeth out.
Max - Great Divide broke off with the CA distributor that supplied bevmo. They will no longer carry GD beers after those run out. I contacted the brewery last month to find out the scoop. We will be without shortly.

####!I was wondering what the hell happened. Dammit.

While in Seagrove, FL, I hit this place called Chan's. They had loads of stuff that I can't get in NOLA. I picked up:

Dogfish Head 90 Min (4 pack)

Dogfish Head Aprihop (4 pack)

Dogfish Head Immort Ale (4 pack)

Ommegang Hennepin (750ml)

Rogue Chocolate Stout (22oz)

I also grabbed a cool St. Bernardus chalice.

Good time at the beer fest yesterday. Tried/sampled many beers. Maybe too many. I'll try to post a list later. Nothing out of this world though.

I didn't know Fro was going to be there. :fro:
Did anyone notice the pic in :fro: above?

The New River Pale was good. Better than good, but not very good. Nice amber color. Citrusy smell. Not overly hoppy. Easy drinking.

On to a Stone IPA. It's a bit hoppier.

Ayinger Brau Weiss (Hefe).

Pretty darn good Hefe.

Hey Skylord, I agree on the JP labels - awesome artwork. I kept the Madrugada Obscura Dark Dawn Stout for myself, but the label is also pretty cool.

I've had this beer on tap before and I thought it was really good. The style obviously limits the hops, but I found the smell and taste to be very good for a Pale Ale.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. I was trying to find the right word. Better than good. Really good is about right. I read that it's even better on tap, especially cask. I guess that's often the case.Sad story about New River Dream gig for the brewmaster. Got a deal to have it contract brewed at Old Dominion. Died from a heart attack. Mom and former business partner picked it back up.

Last night, helped my co-brewer bottle 27 bombers of the best smelling stout I've ever, um, smelt. Gonna take a case of 'em up to The Strawberry Music Festival in Yosemite over Memorial Day Weekend. Count down: 10 days . . .

So far I'm not really impressed by this beer. I was expecting bold, distinct flavors out of the juggernaut of a brewery. The flavors are fairly common with a touch of peet towards the end, but very minor.

No, not at all :D And with Furley carpet bombing me with various New Glarus and a couple other surprises, it was a GREAT day for beer trading.

Everybody talks about NorCal being the Mecca of beer, but the Midwest is pretty damn good too. Thinking about the beers and breweries that I received from Tip Top, that is some serious comp.

Max Out.

* yes I realize this has nothing to do with any present conversation.

I couldn't agree more. Although Northern California still has it beat, for bottled beer it does beat Southern California. We have Stone, we have Alesmith, we have...some Pizza Port when its available. Got some Ballast Point...but thats really about it.

Midwest has a HUGE amount of breweries that have copious amounts of beer. I've gone thru quite a few of them now, but more keep popping up. Beers so big they are all over the top 50. Quite surprising actually...until I started researching I didn't realize how many there were.

Ive recently realized that the guys in the Great Lakes area are in one of the BEST areas for craft beer, without a doubt.I think Cali edges them out, just because of the sheer number of great breweries, but the Midwest definately holds its own as a place with alot of awesome beers that have limited availability.

Northerners like their beer. Always been true. Im from a town in Michigan that used to have the honor of having the highest number of bars per capita than any other city in the US.

Bell's Kalamazoo Stout.

Thumbs up so fah.
Expedition is the shizzy, however.
No argument there. I still have 4 Expeditions left. 3 are gonna be cellared until next winter...the other one is in my fridge for consumption some time this week.
I like the Expedition, but not as much as you guys. When I say not as much, I mean I'd put it at 2 or 3 instead of 1 :D . I'd like to go on the record saying I don't like that BA lumps Speedway into "double" instead of "imperial". Its 12% alcohol...what sort of double is that?I've only got one bottle left of the Expedition that I'll probably hold onto towards the end of the year as well.

Well I cant say I put it at #1 just yet....I still have to try the Stone RIS, the Speedway, and the Victory Storm King.Im not even sure if I know the difference between an RIS and an American Double Stout. I never even noticed that the SPeedway isnt listed in the top 10 RIS's on BA until you mentioned it. Is there really a difference??? Seems that the American DOuble STout is alot like the RIS's.

Here's their reasonAmerican Double Stout

Description:

The American Double Stout gets some of it inspiration from the Russian Imperial Stout. Many of these are barrel aged, mostly in bourbon / whiskey barrels, while some are infused with coffee or chocolate. Alcohol ranges vary, but tend to be quite big, and bigger than traditional Russian Imperial Stouts. Most tend to have cleaner alcohol flavors, higher hop levels, and more residual sweetness. Very full-bodied with rich roasted flavors far surpassing normal stouts.

Ayinger Brau Weiss

Stegmaier Brewhouse Bock

Bell's Kalamazoo Stout

Edit: Bottle states "Brewed and bottled for Grizzly Peak Brewing Co by Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales LLC, Dexter, Michigan"

I've got one of those in my fridge. Ordered it from Archers a while back. Next up for me is the New Glarus Fat Squirrel courtesy of Tip Top

Just done with my poker night. Now time for some online. ;) I drank massive amounts of Hopdevil tonight as well as a Titan IPA.

Split a bottle of:

Ommegang Hennepin (nectar...what a beer. A new favorite)

Rogue Choc Stout (more nectar...possibly my favorite stout)

Dogfish 90 Min (phenominal...thought I wasn't a fan of IIPA's...guess I was wrong)

with my wife last night.

What really shocked me was how...sweet....the 90 min was once it warmed up. What an amazing and balanced brew.
