I haven't rated it either.  Of course I haven't had one yet.

We can rectify this situation later this year when it comes back again. That is if I haven't moved to Portland by then.

When are you thinking about moving?

Honestly, it isn't much more than a pipedream right now. My family is from Seattle and I have been going up there once every couple of years for my whole life. I love Seattle, but its too big and congested, and I have visited Portland once before and loved it. We will be on vacation up there in a few weeks, and the wife and I have been talking about wanting to move up there. I'll be in Portland for a couple of days and check it out, but the earliest we would think about moving up there is winter. We'll see. It is going to be a ##### to move, and its not like I have a job waiting for me up there.

I picked up a motherlode last night at Knightly Spirits. Got ona Rogue kick the other night in Sarasota, so I picked up bombers of Chocolate Stout, Dead Guy Ale, Smoke Ale, and Brutal Bitter. Also grabbed a 6 each of Dogfish Head Chickory Stout and Raison D'Etre, as well as a single 120 Minute IPA. Topped that off with bombers of Rare Vos, La Chouffe, Saison DuPont Vieille Provision, Abbaye des Rocs Grand Cru, and finally, a St. Bernardus Prior 8.

Should last the weekend.

eh...I wasn't really impressed. Saisons are really difficult to do. If not perfect they seem sort of jumbled and unorganized.

I totally agreed with your assesment of the Hennepin btw. Great rendition of the style, and every time I have one I think to myself why I don't drink it more. I would love to get a hold of some Cave-Aged Hennepin, even though I am a little skeptical to see whether the cave aging really does that much for the beer over regular cellaring.

Yeah, I wonder wtf cave aging actually is. The Hennepin is some serious ####.Edited to cave aging. Putting it in a cage probably wouldn't help the flavor

Haven't tried one yet, but you could probably do it yourself by buying one and leaving it in a 55 degree place for a while. Having downed many, many Hennepins I gotta think that the cave-aged version, if it went straight from the brewery to Howe Caverns without ever getting warm, would be completely yummy. Come to think of it, I *am* driving past there later today... wonder if I have the time for a detour?

So many options...

You could skip the rte 10 corridor and head from the Alchemist down to either Brattleboro or West Lebanon (Seven Barrel brewpub), then the next day cut across towards Portsmouth, hitting a couple of the smaller brewpubs (Milly's Tavern in Manchester, Martha's Exchange in Nashua, Elm City in Keene) before roosting at Portsmouth Brewing Co. Next morning, head down to Boston, stopping for an early lunch at The Tap in Haverhill (HAY-vrill). Then go nuts there. You could work the trip back to Hburg to hit the two must-stop-theres in CT, Willimantic and Cambridge House in Granby.

Some of the routes are not the fastest, but who said that the fast way is fun?

That would likely be the most efficient way. Hell, you could stay two nights in Portsmouth and swing a day trip up to Portland ME and nail three breweries, three brewpubs, three dollar deweys (beer bar), and pick up three cases of Cadillac Mountain Stout.

You're the man! Wow, I didn't realize that Portsmouth is pretty much an hour away from both portland and boston! I have a friend who brews at Smuttynose - I like that two nights in Portsmouth idea!

Which brewer at Smutty? Definitely one of my favorite breweries lately - solid lineup.Portsmouth is a great central location, beerwise. The brewpub does a dynamite job with their beers - good food as well. Great place to spend an evening.

Gotta agree w/ nase' suggestions re Portland. I'd hit the Bear on the way in for a primer before the beer tours. The Portland Public Market has a place that sells beer, as well as a seafood shop that will sell you a dozen oysters on the half shell to enjoy with a local beer on tap that may be cool for lunch. Hit the three breweries (Casco Bay makes some highly drinkable brews), then hit Old Port afterwards for wandering and eats. Either Sebago or Gritty's are good places food wise - not haute cuisine, but solid brewpub food. There are also outstanding restaurants all over the place if you want a break from beer (GAAAH!).

If you want to hit the most places in a day, I highly recommend some serious prep work on BA to figure out what one or two beers you want to try at a given location, and then try and keep a disciplined eye on the clock and the itinerary; otherwise you'll fall into the "McNeill's Trap" as my friend calls it and spend too much time at one place. Not that that's a bad thing, mind you.

solid advice!It's an annual trip with a group of brewers/owners of a local brewery/brewpub... typically it's an intercontinetal event, but in a cost saving effort we are sticking to the ground this year. We've got a fair amount of practice touring breweries and such. Our record to date is 22 breweries (plus one brewery manufacturing plant) in 5 days in the greater pacific northwest.

My largest local brewery, Highland Brewing in Asheville is planning on brewing an 8.5% version of their Gaelic Ale. This is the kind of stuff I have been looking forward too since we popped the cap. They also have a big Scotch Ale call the Tasgall which is pretty good.
