I have not. But probably would have back in the day if I ever saw a hot number with her thumb out and a sign that said Can Pay With Gas, Grass or A$$ :oldunsure:

How are we defining hitchhiker?
I’ve picked up cyclists who had a mechanical or flat they couldn’t fix. And I’ve been picked up that way a few times.
But Not any that intended to need rides that day.

I have, but it was in WY and when folks need help, you help them. Two kids were trying to run/walk back from their broken down car to a gas station 15 miles away.

There is another poll that will ask if you've ever helped someone stranded on the side of the road. Hitchhiker would mean someone who is looking for a ride. So if what you are describing is them looking for a ride, and not you actually helping with their flat/mechanical problems, I would say yes.

I never thought it would happen to me. But there I was driving..."

Picked up a couple during my first couple of years in college. Not a lot between Fort Worth and San Angelo. If someone is walking, there is an issue. Nothing exciting. One hitchhiker paid for my tank of gas when I dropped them off at the closest gas station.

Voted yes though it wasn't technically a hitchhiker: last night I was at Walmart picking up some chairs my wife bought. Got them loaded up in the trailer and a guy comes up to me and asked if I could give him a ride home. He had a bike and none of the Ubers would take the bike. I said sure and we threw the bike on the trailer with the chairs. Got to talking and turns out he's from Ukraine working at the theme park to send money back home. He was at Walmart to return the bike but they wouldn't take it back, he said he's heading back home to join the military. After I dropped him off I had the thought that I should have offered to buy the bike.

But on another note, back in the 70s (and probably until he died) my dad would always pick up hitchhikers. He was extremely religious and it gave him a chance to preach to whoever he picked up. I'm sure some of them were more than ready to disembark as soon as possible. And here I am a 10 or so year old stuck between my preaching dad and some "strange" hitchhiker on a bench seat in an old pickup truck. Fun times!

Never have, but might have many years ago when I was in college or shortly thereafter. Just seems like a lot more weirdos out there these days (as @PIK95 will likely weigh in).

Used to, regularly in my 20s. But the nature of hitchhikers changed a lot- rude, aggressive, entitled, many with mental health issues and all of them with less than optimal grooming habits.

In college I was in Kalamazoo visiting some friends at Western Michigan University and hitchhiked back to Ann Arbor. About 90 miles away. I get my first ride to Jackson MI and get dropped off. I then get picked by a decent looking lady who I thought was old at the time but maybe around 40. I am only 21.

We start driving and she starts asking where i was coming from and going to, if I had a girlfriend and getting kind of cozy. I am checking her out and thinking maybe? I ask her where she is heading and she says Detroit and that she was visiting her husband. I said visiting? She said yes he is in Jackson State Prison..for atempted murder. Then goes on to say he was in a biker club in Detroit, was framed and blah blah blah.

First Ann Arbor exit I see I tell her this is good!! I got out ran to a gas station and called my buddy to pick me up.

Wife (gf at the time) and I were driving somewhere in Atlanta. A young woman comes running toward the car screaming for help. We thought she was being attacked or something, so we let her jump in the backseat. Just as we start to drive away, two cop cars zoom in and block our path. They took her away, and that was that.

30+ years ago I did from time to time (and had to be picked up myself once or twice when the old cars I had left me stranded).

But today? Nope.

Only once about ~15 years ago, but it was a unique circumstance. Pouring rain, around 10 pm, on the interstate, and I saw a motorcycle parked on the shoulder with no rider. About 2 miles down the road I see a guy walking, motorcycle jacket on, holding his helmet in his hand. As my lights got closer he turned and tried waving me down. So I broke my rule and pulled over for him, knowing that it was another ~10 miles to the nearest exit. He was from out of state, wet and cold and tired and miserable. We hit the first exit and he pointed to a hotel he saw that just happened to have a Waffle House right next door and you'd have thought I had delivered him to the gates of heaven by how happy he was.

More frequently back when I was a kid and later on when I was paddling as it was a common way to get back to the put in after dropping off your vehicle at the takeout.

Not anymore though.

For about 10 years my commute was Breckenridge to Vail. On very rare occasion I would take someone to one of those towns. That stopped when one passenger only wanted to talk about the word.

Me? No. But when I was about 10 years old I remember my parents picked some guy in his 20's up on the way up the mountain near Idyllwild, California. Not sure if his car had broken down or if he was just walking but we took him up the mountain, maybe 15-20 minutes of a ride.

Closest I got was when I stopped in some random town off the I-10 in west Texas on my way from California to Austin. There was a somewhat-attractive girl in her late 20's who was clearly looking for a ride sitting at the gas station I had filled up at. I considered asking her where she was headed, but she had a dog and a couple of backpacks with her so I figured she had a partner (dude?) with her and at the time I was driving a small pickup which had the bed full of crap... so it would have been a tight fit even if it was just her and the pup. I decided to just keep going.

Yep. Plenty of times in ski towns, the islands and in Europe. . I’ve also been the hitchhiker in all those situations. . The only sketchy one was a single woman, 1am in Tempe, AZ. she Was a crackhead from a trailer park. Couldn’t get her out of my car fast enough.

I've done it twice.

Once was a guy walking on the highway just down on his luck trying to get somewhere warmer before the weather turned cold. I only took him about 25 miles further before I had to get off the highway.

The second was a woman who turned out to be a Roma (Romani, gypsy, or what have you...). She asked for a ride to a specific place in town while standing outside of a Wal Mart and I was doing nothing on my lunch break, so thought what the heck.

Both times went smooth and no further incidents, just gave them a ride and had some small talk.

Honestly can’t remember the last time I saw someone hitchhiking.

Never hitchhiked or given a hitchhiker a ride and nowadays I wouldn’t ever do either - unless I thought I had no choice at all.

Believe I have told this story on here before…but I picked up a hitchhiker once in college driving from Indiana to Wyoming. Not a hitchhiker but a woman and her daughter whose car had broken down.

When I pull over at the next gas station I see she refuses to get out of my car. Her son was graduating from the Marines and the only way she says she makes it is if I drive her she claims - it’s a few hours out of my way.

I kindly say I cannot do this but she’s not leaving. I look at her daughter and I still remember the look which was basically “you are ****ed”.

I have to be careful what I say here, but, through work, I'm keenly aware that some hitchikers aren't, uh, nice people. So, based on that I never have and never will (assuming the hitchiker is a stranger to me).

Clarifying the above, I actually have picked up a person who was technically hitchhiking on the side of the road but I knew him and knew him to be safe to pick up.

So did you take her?

Yes, when I was sixteen I was giving a couple of buddies a ride home from practice. It was pouring rain. I didn't realize one of the kids lived out in the absolute middle of nowhere, and I was in a little hurry. The kid was a freshman and was busting me from the back seat most of the ride. We come around a corner and get on the reservoir bridge. About half way down there is this giant biker dude that was a dead ringer for Hagrid with his thumb out. He was SOAKED.
Part of me felt bad for the guy, and part of me wanted to mess with the freshman, so I picked him up. The two kids didn't say word the entire time. I only drove him for a mile or so (he was going far out) but he was cool and was happy for even a little help. Those dudes flipped after I got rid of him. It was epic!

Respectfully, how can you tell the different before picking them up?
1. Do they appear to have showered in the last week?

2. Does their hair look like it's ever been brushed?

3. Can you smell them before you roll down the window?

4. Is there a bedroll tied to their backpack.

Zow is an attorney. Either that, or people hitchhike back and forth from the coffee room to their desks.

Rape and/or murder. Robbery if the hitchhiker is feeling rapey or murdery. You know, normal stuff.

A prison escapee likely would have taken a showered somewhat recently, brushed his hair, smells okay (because shower), and wouldn't have a bedroll.

Hypothetically speaking, if I may or may not have been involved in an matter some time ago whereby a hitchhiker, who had escaped from prison, allegedly murdered (amongst other things) several drivers who picked him or her up that made national news, I can't speak to specifics about it if I was.

Tl;dr: I can't give information specific enough about a court case of mine in the public domain that would reasonably allow a random person to look it up and reach conclusions about the matter.

I'm not sure why you're confused. What I am saying is that there are documented incidents where a hitchhiker has committed seriously violent crimes against the person picking him or her up. So, while arguably unfair to a non-murdery hitchhiker, I decline to pick any of them up just to be safe.

If you used mouthwash, I'd say yes.
