What's the Deal With Growlers? (1 Viewer)

I checked the price at Stone Brewing and it's $11 for one of their regular beers and the special releases start at $16.

So drive all the way to Pasadena, wait around for the growler to be filled, pay at $11 for just over a 6 pack.

Can you now understand why I don't get it?

I understand why you specifically do not drive to that specific brewery for that specific growler of that specific beer.

Otherwise to answer your question, no

Actually, there is a place here that does offer $10 growler refills. Depending on what you compare it to though, it's not very cheap.

Pints for $2.50 is dirt cheap when compared to bar prices. But you aren't drinking it in a bar. You are drinking it at home. In a form far less convenient than a 12-pack or 6-pack. Not a huge deal, but you've got less than a week to open it and 48 hours to drink it once you do.

$10 growler comes out to $22.50 for a 12-pack. There are a lot of great beers in the grocery store aisle that can be had for $22.50 a 12-pack or $11.25 a 6-pack.

Pliny growler is one thing, but if it's a fairly run of the mill brew for $10 (as is all we have around here), I don't see the draw.
:goodposting:

Shouldn't it be much cheaper?

In my experience, you mostly go to a brewery/brewpub and get a growler filled of a beer that you cannot just go and buy in a six-pack at a liquor store. So, paying 10-15 dollars for 4 pints that you can drink at home instead of at the brewery

yes, i can understand that you are deliberately obtuse.

This I can live with. Beer oughta be damn good for the trouble though.

Ive drank/shipped growlers that werent opened til a few weeks after they were filled, no problem. I like the 32oz growlers that are popular here in FL - cheap and 2 pints is a nice amount to drink at home without having to worry about killing 4+ pints of the same beer or half flat beer the next day.

A local favorite of mine costs $5 to fill on Mondays, which is $2.50 a pint (cheaper than any average bar charges for a 12oz bud/miller/coors). A lot of breweries will release a single keg or two for growler fills only....Cigar City near me does this every Tuesday at noon. Once its gone, its gone, and its usually something really cool/rare/interesting.

Also a fan of Crowlers, which are great for taking to the beach, cookouts, fishing, etc...they dont break and are single use...they usually cost $1 more than a 32oz growler fill.

No one's asking you to trek through the desert for three days to pick up a growler of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Not to mention that beer from a tap can taste very different than the same beer in a bottle.

Had a 5 gallon keg at my house on Sunday for my 2 year olds birthday party. Didn't quite finish it, so I grabbed 2 empty growlers from my basement and filled them up. Another good use of these glorious things

I get my growlers filled up on Tuesdays from a local beer company that's along my ride home. They do "Growler Tuesday" and it's $2 off per growler refill. The beer I like is normally $9 a refill, and $7 on Tuesdays. A 6 pack of the same beer is $10.99 sold in the same store, and the local grocery store doesn't carry it. I'll usually grab two growlers of Gherst and one of the pumpkin beers that my wife likes.

It's probably all mental, but I think it tastes better from the growler then out of the bottle.

So I've been hearing a lot about these lately and don't quite get the concept. You drive all the way to a brewery, whip out your growler, say 'fill'er up!', and then go back home and drink your beer?

Is there something I'm missing?
How far are you from these breweries? I have 3 places within 5 miles where I can sit and have a pint and take a to go portion for later in the day/week. In KS, there used to be a restriction on beer sales on Sunday - so these were very popular if you wanted to watch the Chiefs with some local beer and didn't want to spring for a keg.

Excellent birthday party idea ;)

Had a pony keg for the 4th - used 3 growlers to float the keg on Monday.

I love growlers but the price on some of these are outrageous.
Yep. Understand that it's for craft beers but the pubs I know charge $20 or more to refill one. If that's 4 beers, or even 6, most of the time it cost less to drink pints there.
That's ridiculous. Most of the breweries around me its around $10 to fill a growler, $4 more to buy the growler.
Most of what I see is lower ABV are 10-16. Higher ABV 16-20. Seems the line is 8%

Stone 6 packs run 10 to 13 by me and fresh beer>>>six packs

I love the "wait around for the growler to he filled", as if it is some super complex procedure that takes a long time

There are none that I know of on the west side of Los Angeles. Nearest looks to be downtown where I rarely go. Perhaps that's why I've only recently heard about this.

I've got 3 breweries within 3 miles of my house... probably another 4 within 10. I usually go to at least one a week so picking up a growler to take to a bbq is no big deal.

And this beer is way better than most beer sold in 6 packs.

I once flew from JFK to HOU just to get a growler of Shiner Ruby Redbird from Spoetzl. Needing to buy a suitcase to pack it in for the flight back was a little bit of overkill, but it was worth it.

It's not mental. It's invariably going to be fresher than bottled beer.

Yeah the 2-3 minutes is insane as well as the free samples to decide what you want.
H

It's so annoying they have to use the hair dryer to seal it.
Hair dryer?

Around here they use black electrical tape.

In IL they use a shrink wrap seal. Put it on and use the hair dryer to shrink it on the lid/bottle.

Ed McMahon did not know that.

They do none of that here. Just put the lid on or close the top, and out the door!

Apparently we aren't trust worthy up here.

It definitely makes it easier to take huge chugs from the jug while driving home. Having to mess with tape or plastic? Aint nobody got time for that!

i heard in mudduckland also know as minnesota you can not buy beer from just about everywhere on sundays except for growlers from local brewpubs so i guess if you are a twinkie you should like the hell out of them becuase they are the only thing keeping you from realizing all sunday long that you live in minnesota take that to the bank

Also like the 32 oz growlers not just a Florida thing. I bring in 2 of those so I can try a couple different beers when I get home.

it took me two years to take that to the bank

In PA most of the microbreweries only have growler hours and many of them do not bottle or can their beers so if u want to get some you either have to know what bar has it on tap or go to the brewery try some and the pick up a growler or two.

You guys are finding some great prices. I'm not sure I've ever seen a growler refill for less than $15 around here.

I could see why a brewery wouldn't want to go to cheap on them, though. I'm sure they'd much rather you come drink pints in their brewpub. They'd rather hit you up for a $50+ bar tab, maybe bring some friends along a spend a hell of a lot more, than watch you walk out only spending $10-15.
Many of the places near me cater their growlers to those that wouldn't be stopping in to drink pints, but will grab a growler while they grab pizza nearby (or specifically for me, the bar actually sells the pizza also, it's part of a Jet's pizza place). I very rarely rack up a $50 bar tab at my local bar, so they make money from me by offering growlers to go. I can walk into the bar, pay for the growler and the pizza at the same time, and head home with a really good beer and pizza. Actually saves me a stop over getting a 6 pack and pizza separately. They also get my pizza business more regularly than it might because the other pizza places (even the others with a bar) don't offer growlers.

If your beer is flat you're doing it wrong. And if it's overpriced you don't know the right people. ;)

Be careful, there are a couple of beers here in NOLA that won't fill these and stainless steel type of growlers b/c they think it taints the flavor of the beer.  I don't know the science of it, but that's what they claim at least

This was in the "products you believe in" thread. Seems like they were "discontinued at the time. I went into a Walmart (shudder) that supposedly had some but didn't find it. They had another brand called Mossy Oak which was just a bit more $ but still way cheaper than Yeti.
