When is Dallas gonna realize Roy Williams cant cover anyone? (1 Viewer)

Seriously. Is it me or does he get burnt week after week, he takes TERRIBLE angles and guys just run by him every game. You could see Brees' eyes light up last night when he saw his WR's streaking across the field and only Roy Williams back there to stop them

Had a feeling about last night's game -- that based on his experience with Dallas, Sean Payton was going to know exactly how to isolate Roy Williams 1-on-1 with WRs and then toast him.

Both safety positions put a hole the size of Texas in Dallas's secondary. If only they would address this in April.

What's happened to Roy Williams? He's still a stud safety, isn't he? He's a little young to have lost a step. However, I do wonder about how the illegalization of the horse-collar tackle has affected his game. On the Jamaal Jones TD, after the catch, Roy reached out for Jones's neck-pad and then let up ... allowing Jones to score.

nothing new here guys

we've known this for four years.. our secondary gets toasted more than wonderbread.

if you have a WR that can stretch the D and a qb that can air it out.. we are in deep trouble

He is a glorified LB

He makes some big hits but I would rather him tackle lightly and actually be able to cover someone. Its seriously EVERY GAME where he gets burnt. I can't believe they ever leave him isolated in the middle of the field on any given play. They should designate another DB to hold his hand back there at all times

He's quite possibly my least favorite player on the team. Doesn't fit into the 3-4 at all. I really think when Dallas moved to the 3-4 they should have looked to move the guy. Since theoretically they have the extra LB up there he needed to play off the line more.

It's just pathetic and for some reason the press and the team trys to shield this guy as some sort of stud.

What a ####### joke.

They really do need to draft or sign a safety in the off season and move Roy to LB. He can't cover anyone deep, and he has no awareness of where the ball is relative to the receiver when the ball is in the air.

This team needs to do whatever it takes to trade up and get Reggie Nelson or Laron Landry. The Steelers had very similar problems in 2002 and made sure they came out of the draft with the top safety, Troy Polamalu, by trading up from 27 to 16 (and the Chiefs - the original #16 - did ok, taking Larry Johnson at #27). Nelson is the DB with the best chance of having the Sean Taylor/Ed Reed/Polamalu impact, along with Laron Landry (I prefer Nelson at this moment). The Cowboys fans should revolt if they don't end up with one of these two players.

He's never been able to cover anyone. His value is in making big hits and stuffing the run. This is not new.
I think he was competent in coverage during the first two years of his career, but that competence seemed to fade as (in my view) he grew enamored of his own stardom and looked more for big hits that would land him on Sportscenter rather than on good all around safety play.

Williams' shortcomings will be much harder to exploit if/when Dallas gets a real free safety to play opposite him. Williams was not bad in coverage when Dallas had Darren Woodson on the other side from him.

For next year, Dallas can hope rookie Pat Watkins develops. Dallas does like his physical abilities. Its the mental game that Watkins lacks right now.

By the same theme, I am doubtful that any draft pick will have the mental game needed. So if the Boys are going to upgrade this position, it will be a free agent.

Back to Williams. Yes, he is a big hitter and a good run stopper. But the thing that many people miss is his playmaking ability vis-a-vis turnovers. He creates a lot of turnovers. Easy to overlook. But certainly valuable. There's a reason that Parcells has called him a "catalytic player". Thats a title that he gives very few. He refused to give it to DeMarcus Ware yet. That gives you an idea of how Parcells see Williams' playmaking ability.

exactly. cowboys would have very few turnovers if not for him.and just to piss off more roy hatersRoy Williams and Mat McBriar were winning the fan voting at their positions by huge margins. Roy had almost four times as many votes as Adrian Wilson, and McBriar has more than twice as many as the No. 2 punter, Jason Baker.-- Terrell Owens was fourth at WR, barely behind Marques Colston for third. :D
