white van pulled beside me w extra speakers (1 Viewer)

Zowned

Footballguy
Just got out of Hallmark and a white van pulled up beside me offering a bunch of speakers. In the catalog they're selling for $800.00 a piece and on the website MillenniumTheaterSystems they are selling for that. The MTS 2605.

They offered me 2 of them for a very large fraction of cost. They were two teenaged kids who looked ready to **** themselves from excitement.

So did I just make out on a great deal or should I  ?

EDIT: I did open the boxes and the speakers are brand new and look very high quality (the material they are made out of).

Let me guess, they had "extra" speakers? They were given more speakers than they needed for the delivery so they're offering them to you at a great price?

I was approached twice in a week several years ago by white vans. I turned them down both times.

I was approached by one of these white van crews in Cambridge, MA last year. I laughed in their faces.

From my city:

Product or Service Involved: Kirsch

After reading the testimonials... I got hit with the same scam.

I paid $500 for a surround sound system, plus two additional floor speakers. They started at $600 for just the surround system.

Refused them the extra 20 for "beer money"

Did some research online and drove two hours to their distribution center in Oakdale for a refund.

Was there with receipt in hand when they arrived, and the manager (surprisingly) offered me a no-hassle cash refund.

I told him I felt pressured into the sale, and in retrospect did not want the speakers. That's all I said, and he quickly returned with the cash.

I can't stress this enough. If you are going to go for your refund, get there EARLY.

I was there at 7:15, someone showed up at 7:45. I immediately went in the building while they loaded their van, and told them I wanted my money back. I did not leave the building until the manager came. I was not going to get locked out.

Also, I had the great fortune to peer into their training room and read one of their training posters. It had listed tips for selling. This is good stuff:

1. Greed. People are greedy. Keep focusing on the massive discount and how much they can "save." Take advantage of their greed.

2. Keep talking. Create a sense of urgency. Keep asking for the sale. Don't give them time to think.

3. Make them think they will never get this opportunity again. Act like you won the lottery with these extra speakers, and you're just sharing the wealth.

There was more, but I couldn't see it.

Also, the reception area of the place I went was an empty desk with an overflwoing ashtray and half a bottle of beer. Lovely.

:wall: :wall:

I'll give you $500 for the pair.

However, I need to send you special packaging to ship them in, so send me a check for $100 to cover the cost of the shipping materials, ok?

You must be in a truck, right? A PU truck, an SUV or a van?

There are people that drive around here and do the same thing and they usually make the offer to people who are in trucks because they have room for them.

As far as buying them, personally .... I am reluctant about buying hot things from people that I do not know (unless they are amazing deals). But I would not buy things like that from a stranger.

If it was a straight up "hot" item, then they would have people banging down their doors to take them. There is a reason they have to hit the pavement and hit up strangers to get rid of them.

My room mate in college fell for this one.  The woofers blew in a little over a month.
So I need to find someone to buy them for $100/piece :bag:
There's a sucker born every minute, find the guy born a minute after you.

I'm pretty sure this is why the picked you.

Someone rolled up on me with this in a Wendy's parking lot not more than a month ago. They were f'ing relentless. I had to tell them "no" literally 10 times before they finally drove off, looking disgusted with me, as if I had just turned down the original Mona Lisa.

Strangely, everytime I've had someone approach me, as soon as I say no they drive off. Guess they know not to waste time with me.

Speaker scammers approached me three different times while I lived in Dallas. It was the same routine every time.

You got "Dogged" as I would like to call it. I made the same mistake about 4 years ago. The speakers were called Dogg Digital, and a guy in a white Asto who looked like he was on Meth, said the factory doubled up on his order. I figured he stole them, but I didn't care. They looked good, and said 5.1 digital, $1,500 on the box. I figured worse case scenario, Ebay them. They worked but they were not digital quality. They sucked!Hey, some of us have to learn everything the hard way.

ps- Location of dogging: Tampa, FL

You could always make up for your loss and more by helping some unfortunate trustworthy Nigerian smugle an inheritance out of the country.

Been reading about other people in my area and see a lot paying $300, $400+ for the set. Glad I only paid $140...might not be such a bad deal afterall...heading home to test these out now...

make sure to break them in first.

Don't feel too bad Chris, I fell for this about 5-6 years ago.

Guys in a white van selling "Dynalab USA" speakers.

Said they had some left over after an install at a local bar/club.

They even had a mag with an add listing them for some crazy high price.

That should have been my first clue that they were carrying around the mag.

The second thing that was fishy was after I got the speakers in my car and paid them, they gave me a receipt!

Fortunately I was able to get my money back by calling the number on the receipt and then taking them back to their shady warehouse about 45 minutes away.

:wall:

Did they give you a receipt or any info about who you could call to return them?

They're probably not hot, they just suck ###.I fell for the same thing about seven or eight years ago. I unloaded them at a yard sale a few years later.

Live and learn.

I thought you were some broke college kid, Bruce Zone -- you had $160 cash on you?

I'll stick with my NHT's.

On a serious note, there can be some very good bargains out there in used stereo equipment, if you are willing to take the risk / do your research to minimize that risk. I picked up a used audible illusions tubed pre amp that new would have been over 2G at the time, and I got it for 800 and change.

But you have to figure if something "falls of a truck" it is barely worth lifting.

I have truly never even heard of this scam before reading this thread. Sucks for you Chris, but since I only planned on learning one thing today, I get to go home early! :bye:
