Who makes the best washing machine these days? (1 Viewer)

I’m not looking for one with a ton of bells and whistles. We had a GE one that just died after only owning it for a little over a year. Repair guy quoted us $700 plus labor to fix it (declined obviously).

What brand lasts the longest?

"best" or "lasts the longest"?

Lasts the longest! Top loader, stand alone.

Bought a GE about 5 years ago (mistake, I know, blame the Mrs) and it's already crapping out on us. Need a new one, but do NOT want to do this again in 5 more years.

Hell, I bought a Kenmore from Sears in 2001 that lasted almost 20 years. THAT'S what I'm looking for. A "DO YOUR JOB" washer. I don't care how fancy it is, just clean my socks.

What size? Top loading or stackable? Just the washing machine or dryer too?
Lasts the longest.

Not sure about size. The one we had was larger and didn’t have the agitator thing in the middle so we could fit a lot clothes in it.

Top loading.

Just the washer. We have a GE dryer that works well.

I was where you are a couple of years ago.

I was surprised the overwhelming answer was https://speedqueen.com/products/all-products/

We bought a washer and dryer and they've been fantastic. Simple and does just what they're asked to do.

We just purchased an LG set during black Friday sales. My wife prioritized looks over any sort of performance because of course...

Upgraded from a Samsung that treated us well for about 2 years but then it started with error codes all the time. I youtubed several fixes, but all of them were short lived. The sensors seem to be finicky and we're on well water which I'm sure contributes to some of the issues.

Outside of TVs, Samsungs haven't been great to me.

Thanks for the Speed Queen recommendations but they appear to be about double the price of a normal washer at $1800. Holy moly. It better be a great washer at that price.

the best washing machine company is jesus he makes the man and the man makes the columbus washboard company take that to the bank brohans

They typically are the ones you find at laundry mats across the country and mainly because they last and owners don't have to switch out new machines all the time
Are they practical for home use? They are simplistic in nature but they get the clothes clean and they last a long time

I would steer clear of ALL front load Washers, they break easily, Samsung is one of the leaders in those front load machines and they break a lot, ask any repairman
You want a top load washer where you lift the lead

Maytag isn't cheap but its less than Speed Queen and their products do last just not as long as they did back in the day. I still have a Maytag W&D from 1997
Just waiting for it to die any day now, gonna suck having to buy new ones

Another thing I would like to add is W&D to me is like a mattress or bed, you are going to use them A LOT so you might as well get what you want
Invest the money so you don't have issues down the road, it's worth it.

-Little tip from Uncle MoP on washing and drying...dryers will destroy your nice clothes. I don't wear polo style shirts often but here's a tip, put them in the dryer for no more than about 3-5 minutes just to get some of the moisture out. Next you take them right out, shake/pop them and then on to a hanger, finish air drying them and I almost promise you they will be wrinkle free and ready to grab, should look almost new if it's a nice shirt. I said polo but you can apply this to most shirts in general

Underwear and some socks, maybe old t-shirts I'm almost ready to throw out are about the only things I put in a dryer other than sheets and towels.

Back in July/August we bought a SpeedQueen washer and dryer with all the bells and whistles - TR7 washer in black and DR7 dryer in black and they are insanely good. So, quick story, here in Indy everyone said "SpeedQueen doesn't ever go sale, no discounts, etc." and that's fine, I just like to know where I stand. So, I went to the closest distributor, I know I looked like I just fell off a turnup truck b/c it was the summer, I was covered in grease and sweat (working on my stupid dryer) and I just had had it. Anyway, the sales guy took a look at me (in disgust) and walked away. I had to go run the guy down, I asked about the SpeedQueen and he was just as crappy as he could be and he said "we have a store wide 25% sale but it doesn't apply to SpeedQueen, it does NOT go on sale, blah, blah, blah." I looked at my wife and I said "wow, this guy drives a pretty hard bargain" - wifey laughed at least - guy deadpans me and said "if you want something today, we don't have 'em in stock, maybe the north side store has them." I said "Okay, so can you look in your system for me to see if the north side store has them in stock?" He said "no, I can't see their inventory." Fine.

We get in the car, go to the northside store, the saleswoman was an absolute dream, treated us like family and as we're talking about which one to get she said "If you buy these two top of the line models, you know you get 3 years more standard warranty and if you buy both the washer and dryer today, I'll knock off $200 each, I'll throw in free delivery and hook up plus removal of your old washer and dryer which is normally $150." Done!

So, let me back up, my 20+ year old Kenmore (rebranded Whirlpool) electric dryer failed for the 10th time in 12 months. I've thrown every part you can imagine at it; I've fixed that dryer many times over the years but the parts you get now just do not last.

I bought an Amazon sourced heating element, lasted 6 weeks. I knew (from reviews online) that it wouldn't last but I just wanted something quick to get me through because the Whirlpool factory part said it would take 3-5 weeks or whatever it was for delivery. So, in the meantime, I ordered a factory part from the manufacturer (I think it was factory parts direct or something?) and when the Amazon part failed, I popped in the "oem" part but that Whirlpool factory part only lasted about 13 months. I bought another one and then a belt broke, bought a full dryer belt and roller kit from Amazon and another factory "oem" kit as a backup and a brand-new replacement roller failed so, again, I popped in the "oem" kit from parts direct. Then a sensor failed, and I replaced all the sensors and then the dryer door switch failed and at that point, I had just had it.

I understand when cheap, knockoff Amazon parts fail but when the factory parts (which cost 2 and 3 times as much as the cheap Amazon knockoff parts) don't last that much longer, that's when I threw in the towel.

Ditto to the speed Queen. When we built our house 5 years ago we bought all new appliances. The local appliance store recommended the speed queen. The wife didn't like the idea because they only came in white. I said I didn't care what color they came in, I wanted something that would last. There was a special going on at the time that gave us a 10 yr warranty. We have had in issue with the drier one time, but the other advantage of buying local is they were at our house the next day and fixed it at no charge.

When we bought our set, they were 1100 a piece and I see now they are 1589 a piece, if they last twice as long it is well worth it and they. It looks like you can get up to a 7 year warranty depending on the model.

Got a front loading pair of Samsung from Lowe's 7 years ago after moving into a new house. They've been great.

Whirlpool duet.

The secret with HE washers is to use about half the recommended soap
This brings up an excellent point, I'm going to expand that to all machines. I remember the first time I saw my wife dump the clothes in, pour the full cap of soap in and then shut the machine and start filling it up with water, how ridiculous. I also only use about 1/4 cap if that for most loads of laundry I do. I always have to mix it with the water until it's half to 3/4 full then add the laundry and then shut the machine and let it run

-Side note on the amount of soap, most machines if you could see the water coming out even on the final rinse cycle and there is still soap coming out so you know there is still some in the clothes, people use way too much soap.

-if you really want to remove the kind of stink you only get from heavy exercise and perspiration, splash or two of white vinegar does wonders

I remember being genuinely surprised when I asked. I'd never heard of Speed Queen and it seemed like 80% of the answers were "Hands down, Speed Queen is the best".

Power of a good community.
