Fwiw, Tejas has some of the top public high schools in the country according to US News.

ETA: I am somewhat skeptical of the report, however, because Lexington didn't even make their top 10 in Massachusetts. In most surveys I've seen, Lexington is always in the top 5 state-wide. Families move here especially for the schools... once their kids graduate, they move to a lower-rent area.

Per that link the #1, #3, #4, #6, and #8 high schools in the US are in the South. Man, our education sure does suck down here.

I am going to disagree with BB on the education thing. There are some really, really good schools in the south. UNC is one of the best public systems in the country as one example. And be careful with the broadbrush on k-12. Lots of really good school systems in the south. Obviously some bad ones as well. But people might be surprised at some of the northern states that lose the literacy race to southern states.

You're going to stack UNC up against all the Ivys? Come on.

Didn't W graduate from an Ivy? Not sure a Harvard or Yale diploma means much more than "look at me I won the birth canal lottery" really. Met a lot of women from the seven sisters. Not particularly impressed. And I did say public.

North has tried to get rid of Missouri and now parts of Illinois. I bet they'd gladly part with the southern portions of Indiana, Ohio, and even some of Pennsylvania. See, that's another great thing about the South: our influence spreads into the North. Sure, a bunch of Northerners move South, but they don't change the South. The South is clearly infiltrating the North and moving its way up.
