There is a non-zero chance that my job could move our family from the Midwest to around Birmingham. I'm terrified; just on the hit my kids would take on education alone.

Talk me out of smashing my car into a bridge abutment just so they can collect life-insurance and stay north. :X

I had a job that tried to move everyone to Huntsville. Only about 5% of a staff of 200 made the move, everyone else quit or found another local project. They tried like hell to get more retention than that. The PM even put real estate books in the lunch room to show us how low home prices out there were.

I live in a suburb of Huntsville. Our town of 45k has an avg median family income of over $110k and 60% (national avg of 25%) of the population has at least at bachelor's degree. Add that in with a cheap cost of living, and I'm pretty sure you don't what the hell you're talking about in regards to Huntsville.

We all lived in the SF Bay Area which is one of the best places to live in the country and has been rated as such many times. Sorry we weren't all collectively enthused about the prospect of moving to Huntsville, Alabama. Also, this was 10 years ago.
