Will NFC West defenses be as bad this year? (1 Viewer)

Nolan is in year two at San Francisco. I like to target players like Shaun Alexander in divisions with weak defenses and downgrade players in divisions with strong defenses typically AFC/NFC East. Do you guys think that the NFC West will be as bad this year with all of the coaching changes, possibly enough to upgrade a player like Alexander to first overall pick?

Yes, the NFC West defenses will be better this year. No, they won't be powerhouses. I expect a bit of regression to the mean.

With as much uncertainty as there is from year to year concerning defenses, I don't like to drastically change my predictions based on what I perceive as strength of schedule unless it's blatantly obvious the player is going to be in for a rough year. Shaun Alexander has a pretty favorable slate of opposing defenses, so if you think he should be #1 overall, then take him #1 overall.

Arizona still has some issues, particularly at CB, FS, and MLB, but their pass rush should be very good and that will help them be more aggressive especially when playing with a lead.

I like the Rams defense this year and I think Haslett will do a good job of turning them around.

I'm much less sold on the 49ers. They lost probably their best two pass rushers in Andre Carter and Julian Peterson, and don't have much at CB although Shawntae Spencer isn't bad. They certainly played hard under Nolan, but I don't think they have enough talent in place to improve much on their 32nd finish of a year ago.

Seahawks are loaded on D and should be one of the best in the league once again.
