The way I am reading this: The Steelers have offered the 49ers a deal and have negotiated a deal with Aiyuk.
The 49ers said something along the lines of "that sounds good. let me think about it". . . now the 49ers either have to officially say yes or sign Aiyuk themselves. . . .
Are the 49ers truly trying to sign Aiyuk? Part of me says yes, but then part of me says that if they were willing to pay him and meet his demands, this would have been done a long time ago.
So. . . are the 49ers just holding him and not saying yes to the Steelers, hoping the Steelers will get nervous and sweeten the pot???
I believe the 49ers and Steelers have had talks.
I believe the Steelers now know that they’re the *only* option, and aren’t offering the best package for Aiyuk.
I believe that inspired the 49ers to improve their offer to Aiyuk.
I also believe a lot of this was an exercise in educating Aiyuk about the market, what it will bear, and where he’d potentially be playing if a deal were made.
Originally this whoooooole thing started when Aiyuk’s g/f IG’d about it. Then Aiyuk said the 49ers didn’t want him (based on the offer they’d made, but after other WRs received more)
Aiyuk is on record saying he wants to play in SF. He loves it there. He knows it’s a special situation with a win-now vibe.
But he wants to get paid. And at this point I believe there’s some face-saving to the equation as well. It’s dragged on long enough that if he merely accepts the original offer, he “lost the deal”, and wasted everyone’s time and energy for nothing.
So at this point I believe the 49ers have made some concession - added more guaranteed, or some incentive-related $, or something. And that gives Aiyuk an out. He can accept that, stay where he wants, and still get a win.
Like you, I’m speculating. But that sure seems like what’s going on here.
I have no idea. I feel like we're at the same spot we were a few days ago
Same. And it’s maddening that’s it’s gone on so long.
As for this new fare up, I’m pretty sure agents are leaking stuff to guys like Rappaport to get the discussion public. We’re all being used to foster discussion in attempt to pressure whichever parties to cave.
I just don’t see that as very productive.
